Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Question: What things do people usually research about a company prior to interview?

I've often been asked where I've done my research and prefer to be able to say more than just 'your website', as that's what everyone else does and you have to separate yourself any way you can.

Just generally have a browse on the website, see if they have a mission statement and memorise the key points for interview.

Waiting for this job offer is killing me.

If it's also a retail store it's worth while to have a look around a various stores (if it's a chain) and then you can claim your a previous customer. If that's a good thing, thinking about it I'm not so sure now.

It's clear a double dip recession is happening.
Jobs are drying up and they're asking more for less- something that's already been debated here.

I'm utterly bored and skint and fed up with trawling job sites.

My public sector contacts tell me TFL had to re-hire some staff because the central government forced immediate cuts regardless of what the 800 jobs were for... it was ideological rather than practical.

Now is as good a time as ever to know the right people and have the gift of a silver tongue.

And unfortunately I don't really have either.
I do have some work contacts, one in a sector I can no longer work due to physical health reasons and the other is only seasonal (which I will take) but I've already been applying to them.

I only have any public sector contacts because I worked for a contractor a while back. Ironically I was dealing with New Deal schemes for the unemployed.

I guess that's why it's important to get into work early and make the most of the work experience system in school (I assume Scotland has the same thing). Of course you and I had no idea this would happen several years ago, hindsight's always 20:20.

A shame. I have my own limitations (no car) but I make do. Jobs in the city generally don't need one as you're behind a desk all day, so that helps. Could we discuss this on MSN? :)

This. News websites and articles are often good for finding out extra/other information that isn't always on their website.

I also like to know about their financial results and any recent projects (or similar) that they have been working on.

Yup, work experience at school. Mine was just for a week. I went to an architect's firm and was bored. I then attempted the course at uni but found the education and attitude from the uni laughable and a poor excuse, and this was from one of the best institutions- Edinburgh College of Art.

Car really depends on how big the city and public travel services? I live one side and I would have to consider bus travelling to the other side, such as the Gyle- although I have applied for job's there. An other example is an old work place taking an hour+ by bus, while in the car would be 20-30mins. Spending 2 or 3hours on a buses a day grew tiresome and weary very quickly!

Even the SE, with the best public transport in the UK, is far quicker to traverse by car (though that probably says more about the transport than the distances involved).

Well, that's what I've had to do for 7 years and counting... having a clean record counts for naught with the insurance companies, I still get quoted ~£1300 or so. Until I get paid a wage that isn't completely laughable, a car is out of the question.

Well, did the phone interview. Went reasonably well and eventually managed to fire off some questions that hopefully made me seem more into the role.

Supposedly find out early this week

You'll be sitting waiting for that phone to ring. Good luck. :)

That means today/tomorrow!

Fingers crossed eh :D

Hopefully :) Probably be later than that but I don't mind
