Forgot how bad job searching was :(

It seems upon further enquiry that I wouldn't qualify for vocational leave (haven't been with the company 5+ years) but we (they) are trying to work out a way for me to do the temp work without actually leaving the company so if it falls through I have a safety net of sorts!

I got through to the second stage for a job I really want.

Was 7 people at first interview and I got through to the final two. Still the outsider as the other guy has done a similar job for years whereas I would be more of a punt not having as much large scale experience but really got on with the guy who would be my manager and the HR manager.

Just got to convince them I'm not too big a risk :p

Asked in my own thread but had no answers so trying again:

Anybody got any experience with dealing with them? Either done so themselves or as the employer?

Just looking for advice on how to handle the cover letter. Like a normal job application? As far as I can tell the initial submit CV and info is just the standard with nothing else out of the ordinary.

Just I really want it so don't want to ruin my chances by possibly doing something wrong or with a negative impact

cross between job an uni letter really, make it clear that you want to work but also want to learn. (assuming this is apprenticeships)

If it's not a very large company being 23 will be a negative against you (small places just wont be able to afford you, and probbaly wont want you)

where are you applying for?

FMC Technologies.

Yeah age and already educated (uni but only got an HND left due to depression) is my biggest drawback. Although during the open day the amount of school kids, and some talking about just having sat their standard grade (gsce) prelims, was pretty big. So maybe people that young is a bigger negative?

they should be plenty big enough to deal with the cost (government doesn't fund you if your over 19 iirc).

Wouldn't worry too much mate, i left uni with depression (didn't get anything from it) and am now doing an apprenticeship with airbus (aim 22) :p

FMC look quite cool actually after a quick google, what will you be doing on the apprenticeship?

Cheers, I can see it is a fantastic oppurtinity. CAD technicians are currently in demand, with one post advertising paying £30p/h. But it was civil not mechanical as in FMC's case.
4years with the first year just pure college based, then a day a week afterwards gradually getting more qualifications, SVQs and even after the 4years chances to go further, I think.
Although I'm also needing a decent paying job as long as travel is covered then I may be ok for a while.

just remember first year you probbaly wont get minimum wage, but the second year onwards you will have to be paid at least minimum wage due to your age.

but i wouldn't worry after the first year separates the crap ones out the big companies usually pay above minimum.

Fun fact we were told over the 3 years of our apprenticeship it costs £88,000 in total to train us (each) :o So they aren't that willing to ditch apprentices and will likely help support you if you have problems.

Yeah, first year on apprenticeship wage is fine. Think it's around £70 which may be enough for fuel/other travel. By the sounds of it parents may be willing to help a little too.

Been doing research on similar vacancies and a trainee post (HNC 2years experience) was offering £10-£12p/h. Hopefully with some market research I could possibly negotiate a pay.
But this is jumping the gun here, need to actually submit the thing!

Any body feel like critiquing my cover letter?
Initially ignoring grammar but concentrating on the points I'm trying to make and how succesful and beneficial you think they are? Anything I missed out or shouldn't include?
It's about one A4 sheet in word.

edited it out: can trust it for volunteers.

Sent off the application. No editing details and info now!

Got my advisor at the jobcentre to check it over and she was really impressed and said it was a really strong letter. So that's good. I think she realised today I've just been unfortunate and I'm not a typical 18-24 that doesn't want to work.
I also phoned the company and I do need a uni reference. So bricking myself there with what the say; I was off a lot with depression and hardly did the work, but I have medical letters and they can't say anything negative. But still.
I also only emailed my lecturer about an hour a go. But because I got fed up with the application window open I just sent it off. If he doesn't want to be the reference then I'll just phone the company up and change to correct details.

So want this chance and oppurtinity, everyone says it'll be an amazing oppurtinity and provide a life long career. I've so far put in hard work with the cover letter and refreshing the CV all I need now is luck, and plenty of it!

I am currently looking at getting into being a CAD Tech, over the last couple of years I have jumped from job to job. Started off as an admin apprentice, the information analyst and now a rosta administor.

I travel to Newcastle every week to complete level 2 in Computer Aided Design, they are thinking about doing level 3 once I have completed the course.

The only problem that I have is that I dont have any knowledge in areas that its used for. I do have a little experience in Architecture and would love to go down this route. But I am not willing to go to Uni for the course. Do you think its possible that I could get away with just having the CAD qualification or would I have to go to other courses???

Might be worth-while to do an other course. Some-one with more experience will be better to inform you.
If you're into Architecture about CAD for civil engineering and then side step into that? I'm not sure how much architects use a CAD monkey these days, my impression is a lot of them are favouring "architectural technicians" which I think have a lot more product and material knowledge.

This is my research of the subject but could be totally wrong.

Got an interview today for a job i have never done before have no idea of where it is based or the money thanks the helpful people at the dole thanks a lot

Well my friend got my job today! I have a week left and HR confirmed the position this morning. Good on him!

I think he owes me a round of ice cream tbh :p He's glad to be leaving the public sector!

I had an interview last Thursday, went well, they said I should hear from them next week. I sent a follow up email on Monday just saying thanks for the time, I was impressed with their professional approach to the interview and I would love to be a part of helping them grow in the future. They replied saying they are still interviewing and should be done by Wednesday, and that I will definately hear from them on Thursday.

Well its Thursday and I haven't heard anything yet...I'm not sure if its a good or bad sign..hmmm....will just have to keep busy and wait.

My new employer took an additional week to make a decision and I got the job.

Sometimes employers use Valve Time :p
