Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Managed to nab an interview as an employment consultant for a private company. The manager and me seem to really hit off and get along and got called in for an intray exercise the next day shes going to call me when shes back from her holiday in a week and let me know but she said she was excited at the idea of employing me to work there!

Good money to! £20,500 starting! which goes up after probation at which point I also get made permanent also, so none of this contract extension bs. 8:30 to 4:30 mon to friday!

Bah didn't get the job I interviewed for. Back to searching. Had my 6 month 'meeting' with the Job Centre today, which was depressing and now I have to go there weekly.

Just got a phone call from my sister saying she's lined up a job at tesco for me tomorrow, made up. Spent all summer trying to find a job before I go back to uni and only managed to get a PT that I've been given FOUR days working all summer. Job searching/application is nothing short of atrocious and seems you can only get a job if you know someone.

A figure I heard nearly twenty years ago was: sixty percent of jobs are filled without any form of advertising - just word of mouth. I doubt that has got any less over the years. If you are a beneficiary, I'm sure that you are all in favour, but it's frustrating otherwise.

On my front, of the two jobs I'd managed to get interviewed for recently, the one I really wanted has now turned me down, and now I'm just waiting on the one I don't want so much (nice area, nice company people, dull job, poor working conditions). It's perhaps interesting to note that of the jobs I applied for directly, half resulted in interviews. Of those jobs applied for through agencies, the interview rate is around one in twenty-five. I appreciate that the numbers for the former are probably too small to draw any reasonable conclusions. Note that while I say "through agencies", I am referring to jobs that I selected myself from their list. Of the jobs they suggested to me and I agreed to go for, none have resulted in interviews. Again, a small group.

Someone emailed me earlier (seemed very informal and urgent) about a position at some finance company. It didn't seem like an automated email, but if the woman actually looked at my CV and thought about it logically, she probably wouldn't have even sent the email. Still, it's something. I also turned down a position an agency called me about earlier due to it being a PITA to get to.

On another note, I went for an appointment at the Job Centre for JSA earlier, and coming out made me wonder where all the horror stories originate from: I literally didn't see a single chav and had an extremely polite and friendly person take my appointment -- the other staff there also seemed nice and chirpy. The woman also said she wouldn't try to get me any old job because that's just stupid, but she did suggest voluntary work or work experience (in the field I want to get into) just to get some needed experience so as to seem more appealing to potential employers, which seems sensible enough.

May the hunt continue! :o

I have another interview today, seems my new CV is much better. For a none IT related job as I am going for anything. It's as a Payroll Administrator which I have never done, not really too confident but it will be good interview experience and if I get it I have my foot in another industry.

Trying to stay as optimistic as possible as it's been a crap 6 months of the dole lol.

Judging by your location, I think I applied for the same job! Didn't get an interview though, so best of luck with yours.

And remember to post the questions/answers in here! :p

Phone them or go in directly, or check the website.

Chances are they'll be closed, so you'll either have to go in Tuesday, or leave it until next check in.

Has anyone here heard of a finance company called Harper Finance LTD? This is their website.

Some HR person from this company contacted me yesterday afternoon about an employment opportunity (the one I mentioned in my previous post) not long after I had left the house to go to the Job Centre, which I thought was kind of ironic. The position hasn't any relation to what I want to do for a career, but the money is good and no experience is required because training is provided. So I go along with these emails and basically end up accepting the offer and filling in an application form, which I sent back to the HR person via email. Fast forward to this morning and I get an email saying my training will start tomorrow and that her manager will contact me at some point today (I guess to discuss everything). Now, according their website, the company is based in New York, which I obviously couldn't commute to, but I gather they have UK and European offices. My only concern is that at no point has it been mentioned where I will be going, despite asking once already and again in the email I sent this morning (hopefully "Angela" actually tells me this time). At the moment this opportunity seems too good to be true, which is why I'm a bit sceptical (mainly about the location of where I'm meant to be going, but also because everything seems to be moving so fast). But I guess I'll be able to find out and put my scepticisms to rest (he says sceptically) when/if this manager person calls me.

Was offered the job at the interview, was a bit strange but I will accept that thank you very much. Job title is Credit Controller.

Congratulations. :)

But as I understand it, that's a fair way from anything to do with payroll; I thought credit control was more to do with chasing up debtors?

Aye it appears so - but oh well, not gonna quibble with a job description as it pays the bills, at a time where I am down to double digits in the bank haha.

I am currently advertising for a couple of positions at my company - I decided to use jobsite and job centre plus (directgov).

We want to hire a trainee support desk analyst (basically 1st line support trainee) and a senior engineer (Avaya IP Office). This is my first experience of advertising jobs and hiring people (except when I interviewed Sainsburys till staff) and I must admit some of the poor applications amaze me - many do not fill in even the basic information like phone number and then many say they are looking for a wage that is never going to happen (eg 75k for 1st line trainee).

I have had about 30 CVs for the senior and 10 for the trainee (5 days and 1 day of being advertised) and probably half a dozen of those 40 are potentially any good, and have currently only considered 2 for interviews.

Whilst I understand it is hard out there for some it will be even harder if you cant even do the basic application well.

I assume your company is based in London? I'm looking to get into a technical IT role (obviously entry level) to begin my career and that sounds right up my street if it isn't too much hassle to commute to (I live in Godalming).

If the position is listed on a job site, just let me know which one and I'll get on it. :)
