Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Thanks sports brah

You sound like me, were same age aswell. I have no qualifications except a D in GCSE English and a couple level 2 nvq in IT. Didn't have a clue what I wanted to do. Now I know what I want to do, thanks to my current job. Ill be going back to college 2 evenings a week. But starting back from the bottom (English and maths) and then next year a access course. Then finally 3 years in Uni. Very daunting thinking that's what my life will be for the next 5 years. I don't think im even college material let alone uni, so we shall see.

Delvis have you looked at evening courses, even if they are very basic simple ones at least you will get a taster of what you might want to do:)

What sort if courses do you mean though buddy? :)

Personal training doesn't really appeal to me...if I was to do that it would be more specific rather than a PT in a chain gym.

Honestly though I have no idea, as long as I can enjoy the job a bit (I.e. do work and be challenged etc) and there's some progression to follow or the possibility of moving departments I would be happy.

To be honest the archaeology thing is more of an interest than something I'd persue. Basically I like coming home after work and going to the gym, so work that involves staying away probably won't be an idea.

My issue is knowing what to do, as I literally have no idea as my work has been just IT basically, bar some work making speakers and delivery work. If I knew what I wanted to do I wouldn't have an issue :p I sometimes think about going down the Art route as I do enjoy drawing still when I get a chance however I know its a competitive market, otherwise others say I should do photography but again, never done it.

Potentially, try looking at some schools. The one I worked at recently started to look at employing someone just to do some smaller bits, take a look around and see if they can give you a few hours a day or something? Just to get some experience up

Hello all, just after some thoughts....

In short I don't want to stay in IT Support, I either need to retrain in to a separate profession, or find another job in IT, my main question is, what other sort of jobs can people think of that are in IT?

I know there are tons, I'm just after peoples thoughts

Well ignore my second line, first line still stands ;)

Back end support though isn't as bad as user facing though.

Yes but finding a job that is just back end support won't happen, if there is no back end support to do youll just get whacked on to the phones.

"Development, architecture, security" would be the only ones I could partially consider... I could see security becoming boring?what would development and archtecture involve?

hahaha just checking universal jobs match and they have a suggested job for me to apply for.

a few minor issues.

1. the job itself is the bins something i stopped doing as i cant physically do it anymore
2. its 5:30am starts and i dont drive
3. its 25 miles away in glossop

the thing thats getting to me the most this is about the 9th time they have suggested i go back on the bins even though the reason i signed back on was due to me being unable to continue working on the bins in the first place ?!

tomorrows meeting will be much fun. as iv already blown my top at them for keep asking me to apply for bin jobs. so now its time to see a manager! i know sod all will get done but iv had it.

I assume you have a letter or medical note stating you can't do you're old job? What is wrong with you again?

When i signed on, I was expecting then to take down all of my info, my interests, what work I wanted to be in, or a CV or something......nothing of the sort.

I honestly think they'd do better if they did this. You need them to out a mark on your account then, that and take it further up the chain.

I'd rum away tbh...but then even a company that gets back to you really quickly doesn't mean its going to be a great company....I had a place that seemed excellent, once I started it takes people multiple days to get back to me, and them apparently not even knowing my probation schedule etc etc or what company policy tests I needed to adhere to....pretty amusing really

Looking for some advice. Thought I'd get some more helpful answers here than in a new thread.

I left school at 17 with nothing more than mediocre GCSEs since then I've done a mix of "engineering" based roles (CAD/CNC) and currently working as a windscreen fitter.

I'd like to move out of manual trades for something IT based, I'm not in a position to give up work and return to full time education but would be fine with taking a Pay drop.

I'd like to say I've got a good bit of Linux knowledge and a small amount of windows server/vmware knowledge but nothing notable in an enterprise environment.

I've looked at various routes including CCNA, Red hat certified tech etc. But I'm not sure where to begin or what area I should focus on so a little advice pointing me in the right direction would be really appreciated

Err depends where you want to go and how much of a cut you're willing to take. I have no formal IT qualifications just the experience. You could easily land a tech role on a service desk or for a company, or a school for that matter.

Don't go for one in a school.

You will be asked to do EVERYTHING for little to no pay.

I'm on 12.6k term time only, But i do The following:

Run Clubs
Computer repairs
Maintenance
Imaging
VLE Managing and Maintenance <- ONLY ME
Web Design and maintenance <- ONLY ME
1st line support
2nd line support
3rd line support
Sims support

Did i mention also food bringer for the Office?

All for £950 per month after tax. And £180 of that goes to Tesco per month on fuel.

DON'T WORK IN A SCHOOL!

If he wants experience, which he won't get on a first line job, yes, he should
