Forgot how bad job searching was :(

I feel sorry for the younger generation looking at those figures but I do believe that through the pain we, as a country, will end up stronger.

Well Woolworths is popping back up under new ownership and retail in general is expanding even more, but I can't see this working long-term. We're just going to be increasing our debt without sufficient exports to balance things out.

Well I got my retail job, but found out just now that I didn't get the oil job which is a massive blow. The only reason I could cope with working in retail was the hope I would only be there a couple of weeks, now that's not going to be the case. I can feel my brain going to mush already after just one day and the lack of any possibility of input on my behalf for what I want to do etc is stifling. :(

EDIT: By do I mean initiative, "promotion" and the things that come with a job where you aren't classed as a criminal every time you leave. I.e. a proper job. It probably comes harder for me as the last 3 jobs I have had have all been either self employed as such or with a major amount of input by me as to what to do etc.

Sorry to hear that Amp. It's gutting when rejected after getting that far :( I find it puts a bit of a dampener on the rest of the day but tomorrow there could be a better role.

I've been collating my applications into a list and some interesting facts have appeared over the last 27 applications sent:
* 13/27 responses I've received responses for
* 8/27 applications direct to companies rather than through recruiters (6/8 have responded automatically)
* 4/27 interviews
* 3 rejections (1 being down to the last selection) and one that I think I'll have to withdraw is their business is too close to my previous employer.
* 2 applications where I've found the advertised role is no longer available even when the role is posted the day before!

What is apparent is that when you apply through a recruiter, they know sweet FA about what the role is and so you need a cover letter to spell it out. If you don't fit then they just ignore you. Sounds obvious! it's a completely crass pre-filter that add noise and seem to cause more problem to the potential employer and jobseeker. There have been a couple of good recruiters but not many. Also they seem to spend their time attempting to sell to both the customer and you so their skills are just as much a part of your success as you.. /rant

Unfortunately there are a lot of recruiters, and it saves the company having a HR department :rolleyes:

Tried public sector? Blasphemy, I know :p but if the government's going to tax and spend then take some back too ;)

Impressive, if your location is accurate. I don't get a second look in with the employer if the job isn't within a 10 mile radius.

Curious what you mean by that, are you saying you're finding it hard to find an alternate employer outside a 10m radius?

There are literally job vacancies stating "local applicants only" or " applicants within 10 mile radius of X only".

Public sectors normally safe but just take care as loads are using 6 month contracts to keep their options with funding open

Stated 18 months when I applied for benefit office administration, depends the nature of the job.

The only public sector application was to a certain james bond agency but I've not heard anything back so I assume that didn't make it through the recruiters.

Really? That's really not fair, honestly didn't realise some places did that. :(

My locale isn't exactly short of people, and without a job I'm not going anywhere fast :p

There seem to be quite a few educational establishments and the local council itself hiring, so I'm trying both.

It's not the rejection that's the issue really, it would have been nice to get the job and a nice step on the career ladder so to speak, however the condtions weren't brilliant and it wasn't something I really wanted to do (although I would have if I got the job). It's the repercussions for my current "job". As I mentioned before the hope that in a couple of weeks I would be out of the braindead job was what held me above the water, now there is no hope and i'll (possibly) have to continue working there for 2-3 months...:( That is if they give me the day I want off (it's supposed to be "flexible" part time work, yet I was not asked what days I wanted and after asking to cut one specific day I was pretty much told no, although the manager is going to be asked and a full reply tomorrow). If still no then there will be one more job going in my area...

My biggest hate is a brainless job, followed by one where youy can't use your initiative and also retail in general. This current job has them all... Despise comes to mind... (and that's really how I feel, not some kind of pumped up internet garbage). All I want one of those "rare" jobs where you have to think...:mad:

As for tomorrow, i'm not holding up hope, that oil interview was the first positive reply in 4 months, i'm not holding my breath for another one any time soon, especially as I can't now be a full time job hunter...

Sorry, i'm ranting, but i'm REALLY ****** off and unhappy at the moment.

As for recruiters, they are all rubbish from my experience. They don't care as long as they get their money. There are one or two as you mention that actually take an interest however the bigger they get the less useful they actually are.

:( Rant away - better to let it out and talk to us than bottle it up.

Today I've had to withdraw from my promising opportunity because my old place view it as being a direct competitor. So rather than spend the money fighting plus damages in a battle that I would undoubtedly lose, I've decided it's back to square one.

As it's the end of the month, there's virtually no new positions. So I decided to brew some beer using all my exceptionally rare (commercially unavailable) Bere Barley kindly donated by the Bruichladdich distillery on the Isle of Islay. It's a 5,000 year old variety that has been found in the tombs of pharaohs. I also had to grind it by hand which too a couple of hours of hard slogging...

So I mashed and was just starting to boil the wort (malt without yeast) ready to add the hops when my boiler cut out...
:mad::mad:FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU:mad::mad:

If the boiler doesn't fix itself then I have lost my chance with this barley, as trouble comes in threes, I can only expect that to be trumped by my nob falling off.. :eek:

You were let go were you not (redundant)? If so that's remarkably harsh to drop you and then tell you that you can't do the same job with another company for a year (or whatever time limit it is). Fine with leaving but it being the company that set it in motion is taking the ****.
