Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Anyone had to apply for design or web related jobs recently? What was your search method?

This has been weeks now and I've only came across 6 odd jobs to apply for. Through searching agency websites, job sites, job centre, google....

Would cold calling be a better option or sending emails to every agency in Glasgow?

Letters if you can afford the paper / stamps etc :)

Just send a bulk load out to design campanies saying you are getting into the industry and wondering if there are any jobs available at the moment and give a breif history if you have one

Got a call back from assessment centre and got job at last, one of the world's biggest companies, grad scheme and UK travel. Absolutely delighted to say the least. It's been over a year looking whilst studying and it's finally paid off.

That's brilliant, and its good :) Not just a tie over.

Well done matey

There is a dearth of interesting temp work in Reading.

Like I said, the money is pretty pap, less than a third of what I was on earlier this year.

Can't moan really though. :)

Heh, indeed...I've had to settle for a job with an 8k decrease in my salary...feeling it to be honest :( Struggling with the last £30 in my account each month!

Never mind eh :)

Current score:
Applications - 4
Interviews - 4
2nd Interviews - 3
Offers - 0

Keep getting excellent feedback but there's always a reason they go with someone else. Got a 'no' yesterday because the other guy was immediatley available while I've got another 3 weeks here.

Getting a bit disheartened by all this tbh.

Keep at it buddy, atleast you are getting interviews :)

a lot of people I know aren't even getting seen!

I take it you got a job in the end :p

I should have an interview lined up for next week, the recruiter said she'd ring back once it had been arranged. So I'm hopeful it goes well it's for a trainee position too!

I'm excited to get one because it will be my first proper full time job, here's hoping!

lol....Which time? I've had like 3 since I created the thread :p Stuff keeps going wrong....

Left one due to tinnitus, another due to stress, then worked at wickes delivering...now i'm just ina job that pays me hardly anything so i'm literally down to less than £40 each months end :p

Ah brilliant, always exciting getting your first full time job :) Just show loads of interest, and be willing to learn whatever, it will help in the long run, especially if you intend on staying for a while

How on earth did you ensure they were all quality applications?

Depends what kind of applications really.

Half the time a 'general' CV will do for 'any old job' as long as it shows your skills etc.

But naturally if you're going to do something more specific then a catered CV is better :p

sorry but I gotta lol at rejected by asda... it could be worse if you get to the point BK, kfc and mc d's have rejected you its probably time to give up...

Well that's helpfull isn't it =/

Keep at it guys, its hard currently.

I know people with two degrees not getting jobs, then people with 'just' A-Levels, getting jobs.

Sickens me

After nearly 3 years of temp/agency work, I finally got a perm job today as a deputy manager :D

made up to say the least!

For the people who are still searching, keep ya chin up and you'll get there! :)

Excellant :)

I'm yet to find a fully permanent job since late 2008 when all this carp started.

Hopefully this one will pay off

Has anyone got any tips for writing a covering letter?

I just feel mines not up to scratch not getting notice or do employers go straight to the CV?

So far I have got where and who I have been working for and what kind of role I am looking for.

Any help is much appreciated. :)

Depends on the job buddy

'ideally' the covering letter should be slightely different for each job

However if its the same type of job you are going for then naturally the covering letter will just be tailored for that sector :)

Been temping at a bank in Reading for the last six weeks. My boss told me on Monday that I would be finishing this Friday as our project is complete. I was a little worried as jobs seems scarce now we are on the run up to Christmas. By some bizarre coincidence, my boss from my last contracting position texted me about an hour later on Monday morning and offered me my old job back, albeit for two months over Christmas as they have another project they want me in on. I left there in August so must have done something right to be the first one on their list when they need someone back.

I am so happy I am going to be working till the end of January as the market should have picked up by then. Plus, triple the salary compared to my temp job. :)

Excellant dude :)

Always nice when people remember you

Got contacted by an employer that previously didn't hire me as they took part time. Out of the blue a phone call, had a second interview and I start next week. £14k, 15min bike ride, 9-5 and working with zotac products generally on my own. So ima happy chappy :D!

Sweet :)

I'm begining to think about whether or not I need to keep looking, I really cannot live properly on this amount of money at the moment, so we'll see what happens

When I was looking

1) About 9/10 applications didn't even write back to say 'no'.
2) About 1 in every 35 applications ended in interview
3) Only about 50% of interviews bothered even contacting to say 'nope'

:(

When my mate told me this was normal nowadays it perked me up a little. Before then I thought I was just totally hopeless :/

Indeed, more than normal nowadays man, especially with online applications, most written letter ones try to write back

he means there's 10,000 vacancies:p

Meh, oh well

Applied for a position at Saga - Customer Sales Agent aparently my application has been forward to the application inspector etc!

Just have to wait and see if i get an interview!

Hoping for the best man :)

I'm just awaiting my review in this new place...see whats happening with regards to money

I'd recommend wearing a suit...otherwise a nice shirt / tie combo with trousers will be fine (Read: suit trousers / smart :p)

Atleast read up on the company...Write down some questions you can ask them...and anything you can think of that you would like to know about the job really...Just to prepare your mind if anything :)
