Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Good luck Thorik :)

Ahhhh Benny, thats annoying...Good as you've not dropped a wage...and potentially have more to look forward to for the future...but still annoying.

I can't really help you buddy...As I normally state slightly higher than my current working wage at interviews, so never had to haggle :(

Yeah, annoyingly the consultant informed them of my current salary  I didn't wish to lie incase it is looked up, somehow, probably a bit naive of me.

Logically if I can't justify the reasoning for higher pay then it shouldn't be granted. However due to the fact I won't receive a salary review until January 2013 and no bonus until December 2012 and also my wonderful-sun-shining-out-of-my-bum skill set and the 'value I will bring to the company' I propose a starting salary of £+1k increasing to + £1.5k on completion of the probationary period.

In total it's + 6.5% on what they were offering. Which would put me slap bang in the middle of the advertised range for the role.

I'll wait until this afternoon so it's been almost 24 hours rather than counter offer too quick.

I have been off work now for 4 months since finishing 3 years temp working for the Met Police. I have sent off over 200 applications, CV's and letters and got about half a dozen replys. Today I finally went for an interview for a part time admin job for a pretty large housing association in SE London not too far from where I live.

Got a call back this evening from the recruiter. She said they were so impressed by me they offered me a full time, permanent position they hadn't decided they were going to make available. Not great money, but I'll save 120 quid a month on fares as it's a single 30 min bus journey instead of a 90 min commute. I start on Nov 7th, I'm well happy :)

Congrats mate. I know the feeling of firing off so many applications and getting nothing back. Just gets so frustrating.
You have a foot in the door and you know, you show what you can do and interest in other things and progression is nearly always there.
Bet it's a great feeling to have something though.

I had a call from another recruiter, a more senior one, to discuss my negotiation. It hadn't been made clear to me that I had been chosen not only on my ability to drive over the other candidate but for the most part my personality and that I had been selected over payroll supervisors and even managers.

Hence wishing to negotiate over £1k with the risk of having the offer withdrawn was a bit of a no brainer. With the almost certainty of a raise the following January and bonus in December I have happily excepted their initial offer. Goes to show that there isn't always a case for negotiation.

Most likely they will want me to do an AAT which I'll happily do which would not only allow me to be higher paid but also give me more value/worth and make me more attractive in the future and does also open up other doors.

Just waiting for confirmation etc now :)

Had my second interview today with the lead design engineer from the firm I mentioned a page or so back (design/manufacture electromagnets for particle accelerators and gradient coils for MRI scanners). It went very well and was relaxed. Just hope I have the potential they're looking for, as I simply don't have out and out design experience (applying for the position of mechanical design engineer).

Got an interview on Friday with a Norwegian engineering service company that specialise in the oil and gas sector.

Problem is that while the job is potentially pretty good (graduate/junior process engineering role, growing company etc) the location isn't great (Hampshire) and I'll have to take a 20% pay cut!!

Also, I've just started a new role with my current company that has a lot of promise, and will end up with me moving to Aberdeen which should open up a lot of opportunities.

I sort of feel this interview on Friday won't be much more than interview practise :/

w00t!

Got offered the job at £1K more than the minimum I was prepared to take (which is a bit over £4K over my current basic pay)! I will soon no longer be an Instrument Technician, but a Mechanical Design Engineer designing gradient coils for MRI scanners and big-ass electromagnets for particle accelerators.

Why you looking at moving, and for less, and staying in Hampshire?????!!!! U NO MAKEA SENSE!

Once you're up in Aberdeen, as you have said you will be able to aply to many more jobs at higher salaries. The only positive about the Norwegian one is working in the Norwegian sector. Cushty hotels...cough..rigs, chilled people, lots of time off. But it's weird as Norwegians only really like and employ Norweigains in general.

Still, come up to Aberdeen and join the gang up here.

Basically before I knew where I was moving and I was a bit unsure as to whether I wanted to stay with my current job I put my CV on a recruitment site - this resulted in them letting me know about this job and sending my CV off, shot to nothing basically.

A few weeks passed before they asked me for an interview, I then moved into a new role with work (although I knew it was happening just unsure of details) and now I'm going to Aberdeen :). Should be up next week, sure I'll see you soon enough!

I got convinced to go to the interview, but in the end pulled out as there was so little chance I was going to take the job.

So Aberdeen it is :)

Still getting calls from recruiters who know I'm starting a new job in a couple of weeks saying that they have clients who have seen anonimised copies of my cv and really want to chat.

Have had to say no thanks for now, but give me a shout in 6 months time and see what I'm up to then :)

Don't want to start a new topic and can't post on facebook so here goes.

Just heard the news that the company I freelance for will have to make redundancy and paycuts. Personally thought the office side of things has been bloated for a while, and I know who I would like to go. Paycuts will also be happening (dad hasn't had a payrise in years so will no doubt be on what he was 6years ago when he started). But it'll be voted on and if paycuts aren't accepted then more reduncies will have to happen.

Hopefully it'l be the last employed will go first, to get rid of the guy basically all of us hate, but part of me thinks it'll be he guy that's unfortunately hasn't been performing top notch, well I know he's been looking to go for a while so might take the cheque and run type thing. Infact typing that I know a few poeple who will do that but that's due to the new guy coming in.

Just got rejected at an assessment day at pareto law. Depressing not even getting onto a recruitment firms books. Were some very switched on people there and it was like an episode of the apprentice. I'll be getting some feedback on Friday but I suspect I didn't put myself forwards enough. Anus!

Learn from it but forget the downside mate. Ding ding come out fighting :)

Been verbally offered the job I applied for - waiting for e-mail confirmation tomorrow morning and then letter, before I give my notice in.

I need to pull my finger out and get looking again, this pay I'm on is doing my head in now

Do it then! :p

My brother has been out of work for some 3 months now, just sits at home playing Xbox at my mothers house. Enrages the **** out of me, my mum is weak in this area (mothers instinct), she effectively supports him financially for the lifestyle he is currently leading. Makes me sick!

I looked online, and found jobs for those unskilled in a specialist area within 2 minutes (data entry/admin work that kinda thing), obviouslly getting them is a different matter. But they are out there and his laziness astounds me. At his age (20, touching 21) I had completed an apprenticeship and was almost 3 years into my career at that age!
