Fuel up/down again

the only way the government will drop the tax on fuel will be when no-one can afford to goto work and that will endup affecting income tax, i dont believe it'll ever come down any other way

its effecting people and work already. I was made redundant but cant even look at jobs over 20 miles away. This is due to the cost of fuel, 15mpg and the lower wages for the same i job i did last year.

Its got to the point now that i can either go for a Disign Engineering job for £22k but 15-20 miles away or a simple factory job 3 miles away.

Me and the missus have both agreed that after the extra time travelling, stress and overall travelling costs for the design job its not worth it and im going for the £6 an hour job. At 32 with 12 years design experience its hard to chuck it all away but ive never been into the rat race thing and have little debts anyway so can chose to do this.

I havent been priced off the road, just forced to take a large step back.

So because of the price of petrol you are taking a job for half the salary you could earn?

Your post doesn't add up.

15mpg? 15mpg is prohibitively expensive to commute in regardless of the costs. What on earth do you drive that only gets 15mpg over a 20 mile drive? The obvious suggestion of buying a less exotic car might be a useful suggestion.

You have 12 years engineering expensive and the best you can do for a job is a 22k position that's 15 miles away, and thats too far so instead you'll work for £6 an hour?

Epic maths fail?

Assuming a car that does 25mpg on a longer trip it will cost you less than £188 a month to drive to work and back if you live 20 miles from work. On that £22k job you will earn £1,425.35 a year after tax and thus £1237 a month after your fuel costs, which you claim stop you doing the job.

Working 3 miles away, assuming town driving at 20mpg, you will spend £35 a month on fuel instead. But at £6 an hour in a factory you will earn only £10.8k a year. After tax this is £781 a month, after fuel costs this is barely £750 a month.

So, you are going to take a job which even taking into account the cost of fuel will leave you £500 a month after tax worse off?

I think the reason you can't take that engineering job is because you are absolutely rubbish at maths.

An engineer with poor maths skills.......... Doesn't add up

Damn it, i wanted to say that!

But to cut your yearly salary by £10,000+ to save on approx £1000 worth of extra fuel costsper year seems bizarre.

To be honest a lot of people in this thread seem to have given up all hope just because fuel went up a few pence per litre. It's like an extra £1.50 when you fill up, which i cant imagine most people will notice.

140.9 for vpower diesel, how far will this go

Shell garages in Preston used to try it on at stupid prices of 150ppl+ a few years ago, there are 3 Shells all within a few miles of each other and no real alternative if you needed SUL!

I've not managed a £100 fillup yet, had a £95 one before Christmas on the fuel card. Filling up my 306 will hurt as the tank is big as small cars go, 68L iirc!

Would the price of fuel be dearer if the supermarkets didn't sell it. Almost every time i've read about a reduction in forecourt prices, it's been the supermarkets that have started it. Then the local garages follow suit.

How about contracting so you can offset your earnings against tax on travel expenses?

Are you in the rail industry by any chance?
