It wasn't the storyline that made TLOU stand out, it was the storytelling. Horizon had a better, more interesting story, but wasn't told nearly as well as TLOU.
Sure TLoU had a decent story, for a video game. The quality of the story telling was massively over-exaggerated because everyone rating it so highly were considering video games in isolation, not comparing it to all forms of story telling.
Which is exactly what I said was overrated in my post:
A story is a mix of both storyline and storytelling, of which the former was below average and the latter above average when considering all forms of media. It was praised as being better than an average TV series, but it fell far from that mark.
It was my own fault for believing the hype and not realising that video games have a very long way to go to match the maturity of TV series and film which have perfected the art.
I dunno, I feel the same way about TV, I'm amazed at some of the dross that gets recommended by people TLOU was comfortably better than 90% of the stuff on TV. Certainly staying in genre, it's miles better than any of the pulp dross in The Walking Dead.
Going to give Persona 5 a go, stepping outside of games I usually play and exploring other titles I wouldn't usually play - i've heard good things about it!
Any tips?
I would recommend picking up the Persona 5 Royal edition if you can. It's the same game more or less, but has been tweaked & polished by the devs with some additional content added. However, if you've bought the original Persona 5 don't worry - it's still an excellent and very slick experience.
Be aware, regardless of which version you play this is a LENGTHY game and there are numerous game mechanics to contend with. But don't be afraid to experiment with in-game choices ; you can't really screw up so badly the game becomes unplayable. There are multiple endings and your actions will lead to different outcomes which gives the game replayability.
In the original version the time granted for doing social activities can feel quite restrictive ; these activities are important for raising your skills, improving relationships with other characters ( which can increase your powers, lead to romance and better intra-party performance during combat ) and earning money. However, the devs listened to feedback and have given much more freedom & time for players to perform social activities in the Persona 5 Royal edition - that's why I'd recommend playing that if you can.
Stick with it, it's great, worth it for the atmosphere alone.
So glad that I did stick with it. Was very frustrated with not just the difficulty but also not knowing what to do. I'm very happy I've persevered as although it's incredibly hard (died so so so many times) it's very rewarding too.
I've now got a feel.of the mechanics and have killed the clerical beast on 2nd attempt and just narrowly lost out to father Gascoigne on the first attempt. Just taken a wee break now, just spent the last 4 hours to get that far
Started streets of rage 4 finally only on and off though when I need a break from Bannerlord.
Persona 5 is amazing, I have really fallen in love with it! I love the characters, the story, the art style and the music - I can see why people love it so much
Yeah I really enjoyed this too - so much that I put the effort into getting PlatinumPicked up Detroit: Become Human, hooked already - the voice acting and dialogue and some of the scenes/missions are very emotional!
Took me a while to get into it, as it does feel quite slow and lethargic - BUT once you get involved it feels like you are in for the ride!
I wish I understood what's so great about RDR2 - I found it unbearably dull, and I loved GTAV. At least I'm not the only one.I've given up on RDR2, i genuinely think it's a pretty poor game with decent characters and graphics.
On to Plague Tale.

I’m on chapter 3, so far the story telling and engagement blows RDR2 out of the water.A Plague Tale, fantastic game.

I’m playing it in French as the developers are French.
