Golf Thread

I've had some lessons recently and I'm starting to think seriously about getting some new clubs once I feel I'm swinging well. Getting close now I think! I'm going to try some out in the next few weeks but wanted to get people's opinions on where to get some clubs.

I live near Wolverhampton so can anyone who lives nearby recommend somewhere in the West Midlands to get clubs? I want to get custom fitted and was looking at maybe The Three Hammers (where I'm getting my lessons) or The Belfry but I'd imagine that they'd be pretty expensive!

Obviously getting clubs online would be great price wise but wouldn't give me a custom fitting. I was planning to avoid somewhere like Direct Golf as I don't want a pushy salesman trying to selling me John Letters but is this justified? Any experiences with Direct Golf/American Golf?

I have 2 American Golf stores not too far from me and I found one of them okay, but the other was a bit pushy

The Direct Golf store on the other hand was completely different - I called in one day when I had an hour or so to kill just to look at clubs as fancied a new 3W. After a few minutes of looking at the various clubs an assistant asked if I needed any help so I explained I was just killing time and having a look, he said not a problem and offered to tape up the clubs I was considering to take onto the range for a hit so I ended up doing that. I had kind of made my mind up which one I liked, but arranged an appointment at the weekend to go back with my own 3W to compare and I hit all the clubs again and made my choice so now have a Taylormade RBZ 3W in my bag

I also bought a new bag as well a couple of weeks ago (early birthday present from my parents) and they were more than happy to help when I explained what I wanted and didn't push a particular brand / model at all - ended up with the Adams Tech Lock cart bag

I appreciate not all stores may have the same level of service but I would have no problems in recommending the Teeside Store where I purchased the above items

My experience of the local American Golf (Preston) couldn't have been better.

I've been in twice now for clubs, once for a driver and once for a set of irons and they couldn't have been better. Particularly when I went for the irons the salesman was bang on, spent over an hour and a half with me trying all different sets and wasn't pushy in the slightest.

Finally starting to see the dramatic improvements I'd hoped for since having some more lessons to cure my shanks. Played last weekend and whilst I knocked a few balls into bushes and lost them (only mere feet from being perfect mind you!) I struck the ball superbly overall.

My driving was the best it has ever been. I hit 4 drives of 280yds +, which is a distance I would rarely get near to, normally 250-260 is my range, so I was well pleased.

My iron striking was really crisp too, and sounded really clean. Okay my targetting was a little bit off at times (pulling some shots still due to over-releasing) but on the whole it was an enjoyable round of golf that included several pars and 3 birdies, 1 of which was almost an eagle :)

i watched a fair bit of the open over the weekend and i was disgusted to see Tiger Woods still spitting on the golf course, i know a few of the USA players do this as they chew tobacco (still not right!) but Tiger doesnt chew... i cant stand him for doing this..
your thoughts?

Tiger is an arrogant turd of a human being. He was so humble at the beginning, now seems to think he can do what he wishes and when things go against him that face he pulls. The man may be the best player in history, still a pleb.

I'm playing 4 rounds of golf on 27/7/12 with 3 friends for Macmillan Cancer Support because we like a challenge & Macmillan do a great job.

Playing on friday - 6am tee off, hoping for 3hours 20 mins a round - so with a few quick breaks in between - finishing around 9pm hopefully

Any donations (even a couple of quid) would be gratefully received!

Good Luck :)

I know Tiger made my other halfs blood boil when he and hie entourage walked across the shrubs bordering the practice green at Lytham. No regard for anothers hard graft.

Never met the guy, but all reports suggest he's a nugget of the highest order. I was listening to the coverage on 5 live Thursday and they were commenting about how Tiger didn't even have a locker at most competitions, instead preferring to change in his car to avoid having to talk to any of the other golfers.

He also seems like an arse when he's in and around the course. It also annoys me that whenever he seems to be having a shocker ala the Cadillac Championships this year that he starts to limp, hold his knee, grimace etc.

Also, the BBC should hold their heads in shame. The first 2 rounds this week you'd barely know there was anyone else on the course, seemed that every shot Tiger made you'd get a chance to see......

The BBC should hold their heads in shame for employing Maureen Madill, god shes absolutely useless as a commentator. I know she did ok as a golfer, but when she's out and about her comments just drive me mad. How she ever won anything as a golfer when she makes daft comments like "this putt will be dead straight" and it ends up having about a foot of break......

Would be good if Sky could have dual broadcasting rights for the event, much prefer their commentary team.
