Golf Thread

Thanks, yeh I cast when I am swinging badly like above. It causes the flap on the follow through as well.

First thing I want to stomp on is to stop overswining.
then lower body
then follow through
then lag

it is going to be a long winter :D

Thats almost a carbon copy of my swing fault list :D

Overswing I fixed by turning my hips less on the backswing - basically its caused by an over-rotation of your body, keeps your hips and legs stiffer and just turn your shoulders on the backswing - makes a big difference to how far you can take the club back.

Playing tomorrow at Pine Ridge in Camberley. Hopefully the morning rain will have passed for our 11:30 tee time but it will still be too bloody cold to be playing golf. Certainly the last round of the year for me.

Haven't hit a ball in anger for over 3 weeks now. Had a round booked last week, but the rain put paid to that :(
Back in work tomorrow, so hoping to get out again next week...Don't enjoy playing on frosty/icy tracks though.

Anyone else unable to get a round in due to the weather?

Pretty much put the clubs away for the winter - I have no interest in playing on temp greens/lift ball to side of fairway etc. Will probably be march before I start it up again.

As a side note - already got Gleneagles PGA course booked for April next year - see what the Ryder Cup course is playing like!

Been invited on my mates stag do next year. Playing Formby and Royal Birkdale, from the championship tees....... Had to laugh, when inviting me he said "don't worry, a couple of the lads are off as much as 6...........", of the 12 of us going so far there's 4 pro's, 4 scratch, one lad off +2.4, the rest go up to 6, then there's me off 16......... :D

Should be fun!

Managed to get my handicap finally!

Handicap: 24
Time Playing: Just over a year

Worth noting that I don't use a driver and have only been using my 3 wood for about 1 month now, so pretty happy at the progress! Managed to get my best score on Sunday in the frost, 2 birdies!

I almost gave up as well after hitting a 9 on a par5 ha!

A bit of an update as this thread is slipping down the pages:

Spain trip

Played a week fo golf in Spain. Stayed at Almenara golf hotel and played all the courses and then 1 round at La Duquesa.

The Almenara courses are made of up of three loops of 9, i.e. to play 18 you pick two.
The hotel was easily hitting above its 4star rating, the rooms are mini houses with their own terraces overlooking the valley. You get to you mini house via a cobbled "street" so you can drive your golf cart up to your front door to put your clubs in.

The courses are very well kept (as most are in Spain). It is rated as the second best resort in Costa del Sol behind La Cala. We also managed to sneak into Valderamma and saw the range but unfortunately couldn't play it due to the expense. I would recommend Almenara to anyone looking to play lots of golf. I would recommend a resort nearer Marbella for someone who wants to go out big in the evening as the area was a bit quiet (even for the off season).

My best score was a 7 over through the hardest 9 including a triple on the last day.

La Duquesa was pretty average, nice course but backed onto the A7 which is a fairly busy road and spoilt the experience somewhat.

How long did you go for and what sort of price did you pay ?
Did you pay for your golf up front or when you got there ?
What was the name of the hotel ?

We normally do Vilamoura, Portugal every year although next year we are doing Belec, Turkey which is a dearer holiday although being all inclusive should work out cheaper overall.

Would be interested in prices for Spain if you could pls mate.

On Direct Golf you can get the Adidas Adicross Golf Street Shoes for £35.99 with the code SORRY20.

Well I got my three scorecards handed in at Macclesfield and have had my handicap calculated at 15.5, so 16 :) Very happy with that given I've only been playing since May. I think it has been slightly distorted by a round of 87 though compared to the other cards of 91 and 97 that I handed in. Don't think I'll be winning any competitions any time soon :p

Gradually getting more consistent now though. I still struggle with my irons from 5 downwards. 6 has improved but 5 iron is 50:50 as to how well I'll strike it.

Had the worst case of the S word in my life last week at the driving range. Over half of my 50 balls went firing off to the right. It was horrifying. I remember watching Tin Cup and how he cured it, but I don't think that would work for me and Tin Cup probably shouldn't be considered as the answer to all my golfing questions :p

How do you guys cure the problem when/if it arises?

Whenever I get them its generally because I'm too compact ie standing to close to the ball. Set up slightly further away from the ball will cure the hosel rockets.

Lessons for christmas then back out as soon as we have some nice frosty mornings, stupid game has me hooked and I am not even very good

I'm working my way through this book right now

Really well written book on getting every basic component of your set up and swing right, I'm only a quarter aof the way through but my grip, posture and thought process has already changed for the better.

For all you guys that are new to the game I cannot over state how much getting lessons with a PGA Pro will help you, especially as your new to the game.
You dont have all of the bad habits that players who have hacked around for years have developed so it will be very easy to put you on the right track early.

From my own personal experience I took golf up at the age of 28 (13 years ago) my first handicap was 22. I have had lessons with my local Pro and I currently play off 4 where as most of the players who had similar or lower handicaps to myself have never broken single figures. I will add that I do practise quite a bit but I do play all year round so my handicap is accurate [LINK]

Most people dont have lessons because of 2 reasons either they think they know better and cant be taught or they dont want to pay for them but from my experience.....

a. Your golf swing looks completely diffent from how it feels so when you self analyse your generally fixing the wrong thing

b. Lessons with a Pro cost around £30 and to allow the player chance to practise the content the lesson you dont want to have more than 1 lesson a fortnight. For a comparison you will get approx 7/8 lessons for the cost of a new branded driver, does the phrase "All the gear but no idea" ring any bells for players at your club/course

Can I just clarify, I do go for lessons regularly whilst I am learning. For my instructor to have got me from where I started to where I am at now shows just how worthwhile they are. I really couldn't recommend them highly enough. I remember when I first started having them I was worried about looking rubbish and being embarrassed. I was rubbish, and I was embarrassed - but the instructor had seen it all before and was able to build a swing from scratch.

The purpose of my recent post was only to ask people if they had any methods for getting rid of the shanks in the middle of a driving range session or a round, Tin Cup style :p

Hey Hinchy

Apologies if you took my post in a condescending way it was not meant that way. There have a been a few "newer" players in here lately and my post was meant in general than any individual post :)

In the case of curing the Thomas Tanks you need to understand which breed you have got...

A. The straight hosel shot, the club comes in from a neutral path but the club is further away from the body than it was at address and the hosel strikes the ball instead of the middle of the clubface.

B. Wide open clubface, lots of people think they have hit a shank when in fact the have just hit the ball with a wide open club face. 45 degrees open or more

C. Massively inside out club path, The club attacks the ball from way inside the line and instead of the ball sliding up the clubface it slides along the face until it hit the hosel and shoots out to the right.

First and foremost check your fundamentals, Grip/Stance/Posture/Ball Postion/Alignment it is very easy to drift into a bad habit when addressing the ball.

Secondly try hitting half shots to get a feel for which breed of thomas you have

Thirdly focus purely on hitting the back of the ball with the dead centre of the club face, sounds obvious but its very easy to focus on a swing move and completely lose impact on the clubface.

Watch any golf event on TV and you will see that they all swing the club differently but they ALL have great impact positions.

Sorry its a bit broad but if you can identify whats happening then I can find you a specific drill to help, post a video of you swing if you can.

Finally dont despair this game has a habit of letting you know who is the boss just when you think you have cracked it and are ready to win the monthly medal, this game chucks a huge spanner in the works to bring you back down with a big crash :)

Don't worry I didn't, just thought I'd clear my post up :)

Has anyone taken the plunge and invested in the new Taylormade Rocketbladez irons? I'm reading a lot of reviews on forums and have to say I'm tempted to go and have a bash with them..
