Im looking to take up golf again after a brief 10 year break and need a new set of irons. Can anyone recommend the best way to purchase a set? I wasnt sure if it was worth starting with a basic set or go slightly higher up with something around the £300 mark?

A friend of mine uses Callaway RAXR X irons which he bought for £500 last year and are currently on sale at £350 at a few places.

Thanks.

two hundred quid though aren't they?

Looks like they will be around that. There are a few competitors coming out as well so price might come down but I was super impressed with it.

Looking at it one way is people will pay £250/£300 for a new driver/putter etc without thinking about it and hope that helps with their faults/distance etc.

£200 on this and it's honestly likely to improve you no end. The 3D swing plane/path monitor is superb.

Realised the small margins of error with golf this week...

most of my shots had been fading right slightly. Moved my setup alligment so my hands were literally a few cm to the right and hit every shot perfectly.

Took me at least 3 weeks to work it out though :p

Lovely weather up in Manchester today. It's the first time since last October that I've actually looked outside and thought 'this looks perfect for golf'. I'm going to hit the driving range tomorrow and then hopefully get my first round of the year in this weekend if the weather holds up.

Went to Celtic Manor with 3 of my mates on a 'Ryder Cup experience' on Tuesday and Wednesday, 2 rounds of golf and an overnight stay £150.00.

Played the Roman road course on Tuesday and the 2010 course on Wednesday. Great experience, although the RR course was not in great nick, 2010 course was in great nick considering its March!

Few piccys of me and the boys

I managed a 78 off the back tee's on the RR course, and an 82 off the Whites on the 2010, which i was really pleased with.

Very welcoming place, the locker room in the 2010 was amazing, and had Rory's locker for the day :)

highly recommend going

Not a fan, but no denying he played exceptionally well all week and finished off the final round out in a fashion that will get all the others thinking that when he has a lead like that again he isn't going to be caught. What is that old statistic he used to have? Something like when leading and going into the final round he wasn't beaten in like 7 years or something?

No doubt he is the best grinder out of results there is.

Nice to see Rory put in a corker of a round as well (I won't lie, I'm a massive massive fan of McIlroy's)

...and best of all, how great is it to see David Lynn and Chris Wood playing in these kind of tournaments as well?

Crazing I think its 41 wins out of 43 when having a lead going into the final round. Extremely impressive really.

I would have to admit I don't like Rory at all but I don't like to see anyone struggling to play golf (I have been in this type of situation far too many times, just nothing going for you) so it was nice to see him gain some form.

The two you mention both had great weeks and that should give them some confidence now to really progress and hopefully see them up the top come Sunday.

nice one - sounds good.

Gleneagles 2014 course for me on April 13th. Not hit a ball in 5 months so better get my arse in gear for that!

I'm going there myself to play on the 2nd April :) Can't wait! It will be nice to watch the 2014 Ryder Cup on the television and say "I went in that water there", "I hit that tree", "I picked up on that hole" :p

For those who aren't aware but are interested, there is an offer that is on until the end of April 2013 where you can pay for a fourball on the 2014 Ryder Cup course for £201.40, about £50 each. This doesn't include any accommodation or the buggies (£50 per buggy!) but there is lots of accommodation nearby for less than £50 a night.

Well worth a look. The offer is on the Gleneagles website :)

Me, SaBBz and a mate have booked a trip down to Ashbury Manor in mid July! Hopefully it's as good as everyone says it is and the weathers decent.

On a side note, got all my oversized grips changed to some golf pride velvets @ standard size. Was getting tears on my left thumb of gloves constantly and also shredding up my knuckles from squeezing too tight, so decided it was time for a change.

First round for at least 3/4 weeks on Saturday and can't wait to get back out

I've been to Ashbury about 4 times with the golf lads. First thing I'll say is that it is fantastic value for golf, food and entertainment. What I'll add though is that don't expect Wentworth! It can be a little rough round the edges here and there, and you will get a few groups of lads there on a stag or something similar where they won't be golfers, and therefore don't have much of an idea.
Other than that it is a massive area, with some cracking golf holes. Driveable par 4's, long and short 3's they have the lot. Beer is cheap, food is substantial. If the weather holds up (or even if it doesn't) you'll have a great time.

Personally, I'm a bit of a golf whore. I've finished my 18 in the morning, have lunch then I'll spend the afternoon on the par 3 fine tuning bits and pieces.

re: Grips, I can totally relate... I've done the same thing. Back to normal size and everything is great again! :-)

Good to hear that. Yeh I can imagine that there's a lot of big groups that go, but it's all a laugh and you're technically on holiday so doesn't matter how long it takes :)

Interesting about the grips - installs me with confidence that i've done the right thing!

re: my post above...

Grips have made a massive difference already, much better than my oversized black widows I had. Not sure why I didn't go for the tacky feeling grips before :)

Need a new glove now..
