Ok, a little quiz for you all :)

Five videos, five different handicapper golfers.

Match the swings to the following handicaps;

  1. 4.1
  2. 4.9
  3. 9.1
  4. 9.4
  5. 16.5

Golfbidder website has huge stock of 2nd hand stuff, im sure u will find something there. Probably ping g10 u might get for that price.

If you like the Titleist, older models like the 909D3, 910D3 are good value. 910D3 is adjustable if that matters to you.

Thanks for the pointers.

909's and 910's were a little over my budget for now. Managed to pick up a 907D1 for £31 including postage off ebay. Not too sure if i've brought the right shaft option. But will see how it goes, can always sell it on or upgrade the shaft. I kinda wanted the Proforce V2 shaft to be honest, but only because i'd used the older Proforce gold shaft in a callaway driver about 12-13 years ago (can't believe how long it's been since i've actually played properly).

Got a swix shaft in my 975, which although lost me a little length compared to my previous Callaway with proforce shaft, it seemed stiffer and dealt with twisting better, so as a cheap fix could hopefully swap shafts over if it doesn't work out.

Anyone heard of Swix shafts? bit of a google search leads me to a company that make ski equipment, no mention of golf shafts though?

I'm going to guess:

Video A - 4.1
Video B - 9.4
Video C - 16.5
Video D - 9.1
Video E - 4.9

Although there are some pretty horrendous swings going on there. Some of the postures and swing planes are awful.

Lol, everybody's swing is different. You've only gotta look at the likes of Furyk, and Ray Floyd (both Major winners) to realise that an unorthodox swing can work. Granted the slow motion perhaps highlights and overemphasises somebody's bad habits, plane, posture etc, but it gives instant feedback that can then be worked on.

I'm sure the majority of golfers would be horrified watching the playback of their swings

Anyway you're fairly warm with your answer, however you're not correct on all of them.

Here's a video of Ray Floyds swing to be going on with ;)

Jim Thorpe...

And not forgetting Eamonn Darcy!

Is it a trick question and they're actually all 16.5? I don't mean that in a horrible way because as you say people have different swings. It just looks like there are so many variables that can go wrong in those swings.

I'm all for constructed criticism and I'm sure my friends would be only too happy for comments regarding their swings, but just saying "Those swings are rubbish" or words to that effect helps nobody.

Take a look at 4 times major winner Ray Floyds swing above, that looks like a dreadful swing, but it obviously works wonders for him....

I'd be interested to see your swing, I take it you and Dantheman are pros? ;)

I'm by no means pro and have a higher handicap than most of those people, however I am a stickler for good posture and swing plane as its something I've put a lot of work into. I see people all the time with swings that I would class as dodgy but who play off single figures and most of them are a lot more consistent than me. I think it's the awkwardness of some of those swings that make me question how consistent they can be.

If I had a video of my swing I would happily post it on here :D. It probably looks worse than most of those.

I play week in week out with these guys and I can assure you they all play some cracking golf! The 2 lower handicappers can regularly play to around level par. In fact the 4.1 handicapper is one of the most consistent (straight down the middle) players I know, he just doesn't get enough birdies. He also won the club championship this year, not bad I guess for someone with an "awkward swing" :p

Got my free golf lesson tonight that I received from buying my PING clubs in American Golf recently!

Almost guarenteed that I'll be commented on for having too steep a swing plane and being too close to the ball :p

Hopefully can address the issues and use tomorrow morning's round to make some progress :)

Slight golf nerd post alert.
Got some new cutlery this week to replace my AP2s (1/2 longer S400 Sensicore shafts with Golf Pride tour velvet grips).
I decided on a change and a slightly lower trajectory, Mizuno MP37s (S300 shafts with new decade multicompound grips) fitted that bill though they are known to be a little harder to play well with if your iron game is poor or off on any given day.
When they arrived I decided to redo the paintfill.
I used a similar scheme to my AP2's previously using Seat Flash Red paint.

During, I played about with all white but didn't fancy it.

Today was my first day out with them and the first thing I noticed was that my draw has returned, no pushed irons and distance is equal if not slightly better with them over the AP2's.
The Mizunos are standard length too so 1/2 shorter than the Titleists.
Wee bit wet out today but hit them quite well.

Comparing the two 3 irons, guess which one is which, Titleist vs Mizuno. Veru little difference to look at but stood over them, it is more noticeable.

Anyone else playing similar?

Just out of curiosity what HC do u play off and how many times a week do u play?

Also how come u went for a bladed iron over the cavaity iron? What made your mind up when u went for the blade?

I am a 20 hc im lucky to get out twice a month if im lucky as i play mostly society golf.

Currently 7.7 which wont change now for the rest of the year unless I play in an open or two.
I used to play off high 5's-low 6's and used Mizuno Tzoid pro 2's which were great to use, I gave the game up for 6 years and when I restarted, had a set of callaway x14's (picked up handily, no other reason) and got my handicap straight back in with 6 again. I then bought the AP2s new in 08/09 and through lack of practice and starting a family my handicap drifted to 9, its on its way back down now that my youngest girl is in school now so have worked in a little time to get some occasional practice in.
I decided to go back to what I played best with and while watching a set of Tzoid pro 2's, saw a set of MP37s which are a shade harder to hit but am of the mind that the easier the club you are given to hit is, the less you focus your mind in getting the best from it. Took the MP37's out for the first round yesterday and shot +2 gross so have already made my mind up! haha.
In the summer I play in our club weekend comp and once a month in a society and occasionally a Wednesday 9 hole sweep. In the Winter (as of start of October) I play Saturdays and most Sundays if weather permits. I really should get out and actually practice more.
What about yourself? have you had any lessons? Do you play for social or competitive reasons?

Apologies, I genuinely meant no offence. I always thought you could see pros with odd swings like you've mentioned getting away with it so regularly because they play every day and have done since they were children making that motion natural to them. If they had those swings playing once a month, I'd hazard a guess that inconsistencies would slip in which is the point i was trying to get at above with your friends' swings. I didn't say they were rubbish though.

Also, my swing is obviously by no means pro. I've developed a bad habit where my head drops at least 6 inches on my downswing due to me bending my back and I can't seem to stop myself from doing it now :( I'm more than happy to put a vid up for you to constructively tear apart though :p

/EDIT - Here you go. Please ignore the flat bed hair..

Mainly social, golf isn't my priority right now i have to sort my education out etc. after my studies when i get a job i would like to take it more serious and play about 3 times a week. Right now im doing nothing with my life so money isn't exactly good if u know what i mean. I done a kind of group lesson 2 years ago and wasn't really happy with the coaching. Got a custom fit on a new driver a couple of weeks ago and basically got a free lesson from it as well. Improved my long game so much as i was struggling with that all year. My ball striking is pretty good my technique just isn't up to scratch. Also practice is the biggest reason im playing off 20 now. Im lucky if i get to the range once a week.

Anyone still playing at the moment? Had competition on sunday, but didn't go well as hitting all my pitch/chip shots fat. Worked it out and cost me 10 shots in total!

Had a free & paid lesson recently and changed my swing completely, so trying to adapt to it. Irons are working out much better already and getting some nice draws on them, so just got to apply this to short game.

Going to use this winter to get to the driving range a lot and have a solid swing for next year!

Played 18 on Friday. Struggled really badly on the front 9, I was 5 down at the turn with only 9 points also (don't know the gross score, but would expect around 50) having 3 pars! Quite a lot on my mind at the moment outside of golf with personal/family stuff. Tried to put all that out of my head for the next 9.

Managed to go around the back 9 in gross +3 and won the matchplay on the last. Amazing what can happen when you clear your head of as much as possible and just play golf.

Got my winter lesson plan being put together by my pro. He's just shifted to 1hr lessons, 4 for £100. 3 months of solid work and I hope to give next year a better effort than this year. Got enough money in the pot for some new irons now, have already tried some of the Mizuno's and also the new Titleist AP2's, the AP's going really well, so after a few lessons and some practice time for a custom fit, think i'll steer clear of TM this time and just stick to Titleist, Ping and Mizuno, though the Pings are not really a favourite of mine as i'm not keen on the look s of them.

Hey guys, is anyone a member of a golf society? Would you recommend them and which ones are you members of?

Also, do any of you guys meet up for a game?

Thanks :)

Nice blades :)

FYI mizuno irons aren't shorter than Titleist irons - Mizuno state the length of the shaft without grip, Titleist with grips :)
Cheers, I did not know that!
My old Ap2's were half an inch longer than standard though as I replaced the S300 shafts with new s400 sensicores which felt great but still went too high.
