Golf Thread

The main things I'd recommend when buying clubs are to go to a course or high street shop and try as many different sets as you can, and to get fitted for clubs. Make sure they let you try the clubs on a driving bay/range and get fitted, even if you have to pay. There is a pretty major difference between the shafts you can have specced on clubs, and in my opinion it really makes a difference in how the clubs feel. Also it allows you to try the difference between regular and stiff flex shafts etc.

It also depends what your main aims are in golf regulus, or what you'd like to improve on. If you want more distance, more forgiveness, higher ball flight, or more control, there are clubs that will suit each purpose, and sometimes several at once. I've got a set of Mizuno game-improvement type irons and they have added a lot of distance to my game. If you're having lessons, speak to your pro and see whether they think changing irons would be beneficial for you.

Do you guys think there's any difference between 'big name' golf clubs? I play with an old Srixon set and while it's serving it purpose just fine right now with regards to my skill level, I am on the lookout for a decent set. I'm quite partial to Taylormade but could really be convinced to go Ping/Callaway/Nike/Mizuno etc.

All of the major OEMs put out decent clubs, but some people will trash the clubs because they didn't work for them, or they have preconceived notions of a particular manufacturer - some people slate Taylormade because they percieve them as a company that flood the market with too many sets of clubs in a short time, but there is one other manufacturer in particular that puts out even more clubs yet never gets the same ridicule

In some ways, golf is just like computers in that there are people who will defend a particular brand without giving other brands a chance to prove that they have an equally good offering for what someone else might want

Are you saying that you don't consider Srixon to be a decent set? I would personally beg to differ having checked out the new Z545 and Z745 range (I have no business hitting the Z945 so I am not going to even try those) and a local club has given me a very good price for a full fitting and that includes a lot of different shaft options for no upcharge. I will be honest and say that a couple of years ago I wouldn't have considered them, but that was due to my lack of knowledge regarding what they had available - in part, the same can be said of the new Wilson Staff driver. I have not seen it yet, but I have seen the results of people who had a fitting and the gains that they got through doing this so if I was looking for a driver I would not be dismissing it because of the name

Regardless of my comment above, fitting is the biggest thing that will make a difference to you, assuming you have a semi-repeatable swing, and I would recommend trying as many different sets as you can get your hands on to find out what works best for you

I would go for a few lessons and while there, pick the professionals brains asking about your current clubs and whether you are ready for a fitting yet.
That way, you are learning, he is earning and will happily give you all the advice you need as its a two way beneficial thing.

Working on my posture and grip at the moment. Now a very strong left hand grip (3.5 knuckles visible) - really helps me keep the hands ahead of the ball at impact.

Posture was far too upright and straight, weight much more on the balls of my feet.

Sounds very similar to me. I had a very upright golf stance and a weak left hand grip and really struggled with contact. Now I've had a few lessons I've got a stronger left hand grip (3 knuckles) and have a bit more knee flex.

The bag I decided on was a Taylormade San Clemente

NO HOTLINKING!

(with lime green on it)

Been down the range a couple of times in the last few days getting a strange ball flight (possibly the range balls that come out wet and cold) getting a good fade from them, decent flight but gets out to about 190-200 yards then the ball appears to take a bit of a nose dive like its ran out of inertia or something. I have a stableford competition tomorrow so lets just hope it's nothing major.

Won a team competition yesterday at a local club. Managed to put in my best round in 12 months. My personal round was 75 gross playing off 12 which included five birdies. That included a triple and two double bogies too.

Really happy as I've put a lot of time into my swing and things just haven't come with me from the range to the course. Heading to Fuengerola with 3 friends this next weekend so hopefully I can take that form in and bring home the trophy we've sorted!

Just had an interesting few minutes at AmericanGolf. I did a short warm up on the range and then tried my standard 909F against a new 915F with a similar shaft. My longest carry and distance was with my 909F! Saves me a ton of money to see that I wouldn't really be gaining much. Swing speed was consistently at 97mph. :)

Just had a round today with a mate put in a new PB of 90 considering I normally hit 101-105 or something close to that. First sub 100 round so I'm feeling a little bit good right now :)

Congrats!

I still remember my first sub 100 round, it was a great feeling. It was more or less the first round where I found myself able to hit the ball and it get airborne rather than skidding across the ground :p

I was desperate to break 100, been trying for months! Everything came together for me today and when my mate totted up the scores he told me I was on 80 at the end of the 16th quick calculation in my head and I'm like nooo you're joking! 44 out 46 in well happy.

That is great stuff - nothing quite like breaking golfing goals!

Not played since September 9th, went out on a wet Friday with a mate, wow, my stella golfing summer has well and truly come to an end. Started double, double, single, double. Lost count by the end, well over 90 though... euck!!!

Breaking 100 is my current target, got it down to 106 on Friday and started badly as I hadn't warmed up properly. Playing again this Friday so fingers crossed.

Congrats esK, now you have to do it consistently ;)

I really hope it stays consistent, I didn't warm up either all I've done really is take it easier don't try and knock the skin off the ball and keep good timing. I will still hit the range later on in the week to keep up my smooth driving swing and see how I can improve it, managed to get a controllable fade as well which came useful on a couple of holes.

You'll be fine Maccy just take it easy and it'll all work out!

Nicely done Esky boy, first thing now is to keep that consistency going so you are shooting in the 90s

Sounds like you have worked out one of the best secrets to hitting the ball - don't try and kill it...it sounds counter-intuitive, but putting a smooth swing on the ball is better than trying to smash it as far as you can

I don't know what range facilities you have got access to, but if you have a short game practice area, make the most of it as you can pick up a lot of shots by working on your short game. At your handicap level, you are still going to miss a lot of greens so being able to get up and down will make a big difference to your scores, I know it did for me

Like I said yesterday, my next aim is to get back under 80 again (81 was my best for the year) but I need to get my GIR up to give me more shots at making at least a par and the chance for more birdies. Putting has got better this year so hopefully it will all come together next year
