bset way to sort your grip out, is to grip the club really, really hard. Then completely relax the grip, till it feels a bit loose and as if you were to swing, then you'd let the club fly.

Broke my PW last week, nightmare. Gives me an excuse for some new irons though!

High handicapper, looking perhaps at the RBZ Taylor made, not quite sure yet. Need to go hit a few! :) Any suggestions?

Serious consider any of the ping range. Custom fit is standard - no one sells them off the shelf. Improved my game no end despite an undying love of bladed mizuno irons, I realised that I needed some cavity back irons to be more forgiving.

Mizuno irons 4 years - handicapp 18 to 16.
Ping G10's - 3 years - handicapp 16 to 8.

Chap I was playing with last weekend, warming up on the range and the head flew off his 5 iron!
Go try some stuff out, I loved the Callaway X2 range because they have lighter heads than other irons and they just felt better to swing. Still need to master using them though.

I hit my drive right (standard) at patshull near me last week. Landed in trees and some dense rough. Luckily I had a really good lie to be able to chip out. Attempted to chip out, caught the ball well (so well, through a bush and trees that it rolled to other side of fairway. Upon contacting the ball, the club just bent in the middle. Looked like a boomerang :(

Only a cheap set whilst I'm learning the game, so it's time to upgrade. Might not be able to upgrade during the winter though, can't see me getting a massive amount of use out of them!

I had an absolutely amazing time on the range on Friday afternoon, everything was going to plan just by amending my grip :)

Got onto the course on Saturday, muddy and damp and I started topping a lot of my shots :(

I've sorted my game out no end by taking a bit of power and length off my swing. Rather than hitting a full swing I've gone back to a three-quarter swing and I'm probably hitting it at about 80% power, and the difference is huge. I always used to struggle with ball flight, it always used to be quite low, so it was difficult to stop the ball and I'd often have one or two shots per hole that I topped.

Now, the ball flight is much better, I'm able to control distance and stop the ball on the green more easily, I've improved my accuracy and have actually added distance. It's funny how a small thing can make such a difference. Long-term aim now for me is to build back up to a full swing but maintain the same technique I'm using now.

Funny you mention that, I gave that a try during the round on Saturday and I was amazed at what effect it had. Sure, the distance wasn't as much as I could realistically do with the club but the accuracy was much better.

I'm having much better success now that I've worked on my swing. I'd safely say that I hit 8/10 balls very well (direction and distance). Played a local course here yesterday and got 2 birdies (par 3 and 4) and 1 par. Rest was bogey or double bogey (and a 7 shot on a par 4 :p). Putting is the next thing I'm focussing on. Also, no more back pain. Warming up properly with stretching and a few light swings before I hit the links. It helps wonders.

Now just trying to figure out which set of premium clubs I want to treat myself with for Christmas!

I'm having a lesson to sort my swing out on Saturday, at the range on Sunday I was fading everything and getting so frustrated!

Had my first lesson last weekend after years of casual playing. Couldn't believe how much one 30 minute session improved my game. Still plenty to work on but straight away my consistency with straight shots has improved.

Having been a big guy in the past it seems that shifting my weight onto my heels had been an issue and moving up onto the balls of my feet and dropping my grip as well as bringing it back in line with my left arm has made a tremendous difference.

Really looking forward to my next lesson and having the week off has meant I could squeeze a couple of rounds in :)

Forgot to mention here that I too have invested in lessons. Had my 3rd lesson today and I literally cannot recommend it enough. It has helped my game tremendously. I have so much more confidence now. My coach changed my grip, stance, swing, the works. I play with a much more relaxed gripped and different finger positions. Felt so strange during my first swings, he just kept saying 'trust the grip, trust the grip, relax and trust it'.

I really see it as one of the best investments I've ever made in a hobby. While I still have a metric ton of stuff to work on, I can now more easily identify why a shot went wrong and how to fix it.

Also, I was hitting my 7 iron (all he wanted me to use) a consistent 200-220 yards. Not bad for a guy that couldn't even drive that far last week.

Looking forward to my next 7 lessons.

Really, if you're serious about getting better at this game, get lessons.

So strange watching my swing now in the videos I posted on the previous page. Almost horrifying to watch my body position and swing. Can feel my back aching just watching myself :p

I'm hoping for some results after lessons, ~200 yds with a 7 iron is amazing considering you weren't driving that far :)

Agree that is quite something! I, for now am really happy with hitting it straight with consistency. Distance will come with time as I need to work on my upper body strength anyway.

Waiting impatiently for my new clubs to arrive...

Miraculous is the word you were after. 220 with a 7 iron is utter BS unless you have a swing speed of OVER 140mph with a 7 iron. To put this in context, the Remax Long drive professional players have 135-145mph with a driver which is over a foot longer in shaft length making the feat even more "impressive"!!

Im not a short hitter and average probably around the 165-170 yards with a 7 iron on a single digit handicap, Rory practices at our club when he is home and even he when buttoning one up the practice fairway doesnt get near 200 nevermind 220.

Hehe, perhaps I'm looking at the wrong markers. Or done my conversion wrong. The marker is either 185m or 145m. I'll triple confirm on Monday. And if it's 185 and I'm whipping Rory on distance, I'm recording and sending it to Golfweek :p

In that case I probably have the wrong end of the stick. So to speak :o

it'l be the 145m(~160yrd) marker for sure ;)
i like to use my 7 iron as my 150yrd club, i can do a nice 3/4 swing with it for that yardage that keeps the ball true to the line i want to hit, it also allows me to shape the ball slightly as a fade/draw, also i can stamp down hard on the back of the ball to get it to stop with one bounce and still get 150yrds
finding your ideal Iron for approaching the green is much more important than how far you can hit any club @ max speed, once you find your ideal iron to hit 140-160 yards in a veriety of ways the rest is simple, just stay ~150yrds short of the par 4/5 greens off the tee :)
