Golf Thread

  1. Practice more short-game, play the up&down game for practice regularly.
  2. Bring handicap down from 18 > 14 this year.
  3. Hit a 290 yard drive on my simulator. (Last week I hit my first 267 yarder, this week I hit a 276 yard drive)
  4. Get my average driver swing speed up over 100mph.
  5. Hit 160mph ball speed with a 110mph swing speed. (max so far has been 156 ball, 107 club).
Sorry for being so stats based!

Just being able to play right now would be good :p last week and a half a combination of health (stupid bug/cough), weather and an annoyingly selfish/impatient **** meant I've only played once :( My local course is closed because of flooding and with a forecast of (and currently) constant rain that's not changing for a bit yet...

But anyway, some lofty goals for when I can actually play:
  1. Practice more, get some 1-on-1 lessons, improve consistency more than any distance/speed targets
  2. Break 90 (current best of 112, was gonna put 100 here but hey, got a year, how hard can it be...)
  3. Try new golf courses, both local (Celtic Manor, Bowood House, Cumberwell Park to name but 3) but also further afield, maybe one or more mini-roadtrips or even abroad

Comps is a good one, may do that as well, although I kinda am by joining a society (first game on the 22nd) which is kinda competitive, it'll be my first time playing Stableford as well.

1. Have lessons. Had 1 so far last week.
2. Practice.
3. Start playing a couple of local par 3/4 9-hole courses to start out.
4. Practice.
5. Expand my clubs and get fitted for a driver.
6. Practice
7. Consider joining a club / handicap etc.

Break 80
No doubles for a round
No 3 putts for a round
No snapped clubs

Longshot goal
Fully track every round (fairways, GIR, putts)
Get back in single figures

I am still trying to recover from my latest bout of back problems, but assuming that gets sorted properly, my 3 main aims for the year are

1 - Improve my swing to reduce errors and maybe pick up a bit of distance through better mechanics
2 - Currently sitting at 5.3, so would like to see if I can get my index below 4
3 - Shoot a level par round (PB is currently +1)

Haven't played since before Christmas aside from the odd range session, desperate to get out again.

General goals for the year:

1 - Break 100
2 - Work on distances and spacing of my clubs
3 - Learn to hit Driver properly

Before I forget..

For the launch monitor, is it best practice to take it in the house after use, rather than leaving in the bag overnight etc???

Dont want the cold / frost to rook my new unit!

I'd keep it inside as the cold could drain the battery.

Even as a new, well returning, player I can't believe the tech now available to us that was something we could only dream about 15 years ago.

Yeah, Inside seems better for any battery devices like that...

Be interesting to hear how you get on, been thinking about a launch monitor for a bit, specifically the Garmin one but that needs to be ~8ft behind the tee which would be a bit awkward at my local range.

Went to the range today, felt pretty good and hit some nice shots, especially the driver which I spent a bit of time focussing on trying to 'fix' my slice, who knows how that'll go, well I can guess

yeah, tech availability to all comers nowadays is great to see!

I will keep it indoors, cheers guys!

I will update how I get on, assuming I can hit a shot

the Garmin does look good but for the money I think the SC 300i is better value (for me) and as I wont be hitting a net at home, at the range I can see direction of the shot, and that is the main advantage of the G10! Might consider it for the future.

going to look into the app for the 300i as it does gather a lot of data, cracking features for the money!

The remote is a great bonus to have with the SC300i with that screen. It's a toss up between that and the Mevo for me for features at the same price bracket.

Yeah, the remote is very handy, that’s true, plus it’s cool, you can manually adjust lofts, eg. 9degree on driver, change that to 10.5degree on the remote..

I have watched mixed reviews on the mevo, and apparently the mis reads on shots are quite high, and for setup it was described as "finicky" by the reviewer.

but I suppose trying it is the best option overall..

It's new driver review season! Lot's of reviews of Callaway's Paradym out today and it looks beautiful!

Yeah, seen some of that (and now taking a break to watch the Rick Shiels review), does look good. Although... I do like the blue colouring of the carbon bottom/top (not sure about the head cover really) but I'd love it if that was configurable, personally my favourite colour is orange, I think a nice similar dark/muted orange colouring would look stunning :p

Yeah the shine of black of the head cover made me think of a bin bag at first!

Just watched The Rick Shiels one, interesting numbers and looks like he really liked the 'X' version which is for ultimate forgiveness / high handicappers.

TXG also have a review and a fitting video so will check that later.
