Golf Thread

The only time I go to hit various clubs is when I am actively looking to replace something in my bag, so I don't do it very often, but it is very common in the US from what I read on a golf forum I spend time on

In terms of feel, a lot of people will tell you 'nothing feels like a Mizuno', but personally I prefer the feel of Srixon clubs over Mizuno having hit various options when I was fitted, with the harshest feeling clubs being Ping. Maybe that has changed a bit with the recent release, but I wasn't a fan of previous Ping clubs

If I had the chance, I would love to give the Cobra King RF Forged MB blades a try, but finding them at a place where they can be hit isn't easy

where are you located?

there is a independent golf shop here, in Aberdeen that stock the RF editions and they have a trackman / fitting bay.

I am in the north-east, so that would be something like a 5.5hr drive at minimum to get to Aberdeen

My club have Cobra as an option for fitting, so I might see if the pro can get his hands on a set of them to try

yeah, a little distance there then!

I watched Rick Sheils on YT when he tried out the RF editon. Man they do look almost impossible to hit!

Yeah, just a bit further than I would be prepared to drive to try some clubs out
If you have heard of Rockliffe Hall, I am not far from there, although it is not my home club as I wasn't paying almost double what it costs me at my home club as I don't think Rockliffe is worth that much more having played it a number of times

I love my Srixon blades, but I never had any intention of buying them originally as I came from a set of the Z545, so I was thinking maybe a set of the 7 series, but after hitting the blades, the numbers were just great, and they took my handicap down from low teens to where I am now at 5

I have got Nippon 105 shafts in my current irons, but they are just so effortless to swing, and the front to back dispersion on distance is very tight (left to right can depend on which idiot turns up at the course on any given day ), which ultimately sold me on the clubs in the end, so if I could get my hands on some RF irons to try with those same shafts it would be fun to compare them

Distance isn't what I want from my irons, although a few more yards throughout the bag would be nice, but knowing that as long as I strike the ball well, I will be pretty close to the yardage I want, and that is what has helped me get my handicap down over the last few years - being closer to pin high makes for some slightly easier putts, especially on greens with multiple tiers where you don't have to negotiate the slopes

yeah, I think Srixon are kinda like Wilson Staff, very underrated on the whole.

Another reason I am changing (aswell as wanting forged irons) is that I need a stiff shaft, and my current ones are regular. (any excuse to change :D  )!

I dont struggle with distance on my clubs, the W / S D9 do assist, which im worried slightly about, as some numbers I have seen are crazy! But the deal I got on them I could not pass up!

Have you seen them in person mate? The RF editions? I mean, WOW, there really is nothing to them! But they are real, real slick looking, thats a fact!

Definitely, I can possibly count on one hand the number of people who I have seen playing Srixon irons, and that includes all the people I have played league matches with from other clubs as well as my home club

I was fitted for regular flex in my Z545 irons, then when I got my current set, I was fitted into X-stiff, but I had done a lot of work on my swing during the time I had the Z545's

I actually increased distance when I moved from my Z545 to the blades, but as above, I had done a lot of work on my swing

Whilst having lessons, the instructor I was using at the time had the GCQuad, so I was fairly confident in the carry numbers it was showing, and it matched up to what I was seeing on the course when using my Garmin watch for yardages to F/M/B etc

Only once when we were on holiday in Spain - there was a big golf store near where our apartment was, so every year we went, we would have a wander in and see a lot of stuff you never really saw in the UK, including a lot of XXIO and Honma stuff
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to hit them at that time, and I never saw them again whenever went back there each year, but I agree, they are definitely a good looking iron, although not ones that will inspire confidence if you struggle with irons - and I definitely wouldn't fancy hitting one thin on a cold winter day

Info and data for days.....
Which driver are they promoting this week?

I haven't looked at the link, but they seem to have a habit of over-exaggerating some of their findings - I think it was a ball test that showed a bar chart where it looked like the leading ball was head and shoulders above the rest, but when you looked at the actual numbers, there was a difference of a couple yards at most

In terms of clubs, I never tend to take any reviews at their word, as what works for one person won't work for someone else, even if they are done under strict testing conditions

to be fair- Mygolfspy are usually the go to "non" bias reviews - something like 17k shots hit to come up with the numbers.

GC Quad/Pro v1 use for all tests/numbers etc so fairly unbiased usually with them

I bought a milled Ping PLD DS72 putter last year on a bit of a whim purely because I liked how it looked, but I'm really not getting on with it at all.

I've been trying out several putters everytime I see a golf shop, and I think I am set on a Cobra Supernova, that sik face technology really seems to work!

Interesting seeing the winner being Stealth 2 but what I see from the first line of review is "designed for higher swing speeds". This is so true. And higher swing speeds being 120+

Anything below this and performance drops right off. Especially distance. It was the most consistent for me but distance was just so short in comparison to the Paradym.
Aerojet was great but on the miss hits for myself span up far too much and my miss right turns into a slice. Where as the Paradym was more of just a fade.

Personally I take all this test with a pinch of salt. Get fitted for yourself if looking for a new driver as the club you're thinking of going for, ultimately won't be the one you go home with.

Loving Full Swing so far.
Smashed through 5 episodes last night. Will finish it tonight, if the wife hasn't got anything planned. Looking forward to the Rory ep the most!
Ps. not a fan of Koepka, although didn't know much about him before, and couldn't care less about him now. :)

Koepka came across as a stroppy child. So hypocritical in what he was saying. Wants to win, feels like he can win, loves the prestige, joins LIV just for the money. Blokes been brought and could't care less. What a fool.

Poulter the same. Although he's late 40's so a big pay check is why he went for to secure his families future. Can't argue with that.

Rumblings are some are regretting joining and are looking for a way back into the PGA.

Agree with every word. Koepka doesn't seem to have much of a work ethic and seems to be 'just going with it' and then being upset with not being a winner anymore.
Can see why Poulter left though, money talks much more at his age and he's passed his best, he's definitely done the correct financial decision for his family.

Regretting their decision should never really be a thing for them IMO, they know they were being bought with the big risk of them missing out on other PGA related events. This is the primary thought that they should have been weighing up within their decision making when they faced the offer. DJ said it best though, work less, paid more - that's pretty much it. Can't have it all!

It still makes me laugh that ScottyS is only 26. I asked my wife when she saw him first, she thought he was 46! :p

Watched the second episode for lunch today, as you do, I agree with Koepka being a stroppy child. His missus though... :p

From the first episode I felt a bit weird when Spieth and JT were betting on the practice game, just came across as a bit weird to me, probably just how it was edited more than anything. Overall I really liked the episode though and the coverage of JT during the comp at the end was really good and well edited etc.

Probably gonna start binging the rest now :p

I may or may not have watched all the episodes (addict). Started work early, so took an extended lunch to finish the last 3 :p

Watched the second episode last night and it just confirmed what I already thought of Koepka

Looking forward to episode 3 though as it appears that is where the LIV controversy begins properly

Just finished the season after binging all but 1 episode last night :p

I enjoyed it, I think I agree with Rick Shiels who said something like "It won't really get people into golf but might get people interested in some of the golfers", and that seems to fit. As a golf player there wasn't really that much there really. But as a (new) fan of pro golf it was great to see some behind the scenes and stuff into individual players, some came across really well and will probably pick up new fans, others not so much.

I assume there will be a second series, be interesting if they follow the same people or new ones, and how much they get of the LIV side if anything...
