Golf Thread

Been looking at getting the R10 as I think I mentioned but it seems a bit weird, my local shop has them but back up to £529, pretty sure they were £469 a month or so ago, but also the only other place I can find with stock is Hotgolf at £449, seems weird how many places don't seem to have stock? I wonder if Garmin are prepping a replacement but not heard any rumours?

Anyway, had a lesson today, wasn't really planning to but went over recent golf games and how I felt I had an issue with picking a club based on 'familiarity' if that makes sense. So first bit I really noticed was on Friday I was picking my hybrid just by default for fairway shots when my 5 wood should be the pick there, but then again on Sunday even with my amazing front 9 anything <95-100 yards ish I'm picking the pitching wedge, even though I've got a set of wedges in 52, 56 and 60-degree which would be better options but my familiarity with the PW just leads to me picking it but then I've got gaps where I'm not great, like 30 yards I've got nailed but 40 yards I'm likely to end up short :p

So we went over wedge play and a whole different setup... Basically he had me with my stance 'open' (e.g. left) of target, narrower feet, weight over the front, fair bit of shaft lean, it was on a mat but basically aiming quite downwards into the mat after the ball (obviously). It felt a bit odd but the results were great really, felt really comfortable hitting shots, all 3 wedges were working, nice clean hits and giving reasonable distances but also controllable. Even moving the ball in the stance and/or opening the face to change the flight... Obviously needs a whole bunch of practice but felt really good, almost like a revelation for the short game

Yeah, I have decided to order a R10 also, going to setup my hitting net today, order the MLM soon.

probably hotgolf at £450 too.

I watched a comparison after posting between the R10 and the MLM2Pro or whatever the updated is called, for an indoor setup feels like the MLM2Pro is the better option, if a little more expensive?

The R10 works with 'any' ball but really needs the RCT stuff for accuracy it seems, the MLM2Pro seems to only work for some stats based on the 'RPT' ball (dots for cameras rather than metal for the radar on R10)

For me I would like to be able to use it at the range with kinda crappy range balls, and that's also my worry in that not sure just how badly that'll affect accuracy and whether it even be useful at all... Right now I'm mostly focussed on club path/face stuff to be fair.

Or maybe I just need to go further to a range with better tracking...

I wouldn't say there's any harm in going for a fitting and see what's what.

Also, is the Scottsdale Golf opening in Falkirk or nearby?
Yep thinking along similar lines subject to finances. It's going to be opening at a place called "Golf It!" which looks like it will be a family orientated range plus 9 hole course etc. Looks pretty cool what they'll be bringing.

It'll be located at seven loch park (east side of Glasgow)

I changed my irons last year after an 8 year gap. So personally I highly recommend it. I got fitted by the Titleist Tour guys when they were holding a free fitting event at my local golf club.

With Scottsdale opening near by that will burn a hole in your pocket
I've got a fairway fitting with them at their performance and Build Centre on Thursday
Enjoy! Cheers

Ah, only an hour away from me. Wonder if they'll have the fit/build on the same day there as well. Going to get fitted for wedges in the next couple of months so could be a shout if it's opening soonish!

Cold (numb) hands absolutely kills me when I'm playing.

Played the Celtic Manor: Montgomery course today.
Windy, wet and about 4C.

Course wasn't in very good condition, very very boggy, although greens were great. Every ball plugged today, so basically no rollout on any clubs, including driver.

Shot a 48 going out, 40 coming in (par69)

Hands were numb after the first hole (first and only par on the front 9)
Warmed up a bit by the time we got to the back 9.
Then back 9, started off with 5 pars in a row, I was pleased to have par'd the 570y par 5 - into the wind! driver, 4h, 7i, 2 putt. Basically text book

Just wish the weather was warmer and I could have started the front 9 in slightly warmer conditions. :(
2x sausage rolls at the end of front 9, £7 :D Worth it though, filled me up and warmed my hands!

Yeah, I was there a couple of weeks ago and it was super boggy, definitely didn't make it any easier so well played on that score sir :)

Noob question here but the face has cracked on my old ping G series 3 wood. Can I use the shaft on any new 3 wood head from another brand?

Any newer ping would require a change of "sleeve/adapter" to fit from your old ping wood to any of the newer G410/425/430 etc.

Similarly with any new head - would require the sleeve/adapater for that brand of head to be fitteed.

In all honesty - Get fitted or buy the new 3 wood with a new shaft. Way better than fitting an old (8-10 year old shaft) into a new head.

A long way off being able to afford a fitting I'm afraid, let alone buying something shiny at the end of one.

Going to cobble a few bits and pieces together and just commit to technique before I go back on a course. Ebays cheap and YouTube tutorials even cheaper.

You got a rescue/hybrid club at all?

Try that off the tee if you do. If not, usually pick up something for fairly low cost that will do for now

Had a 2 hour on course lesson booked in for this Friday but unfortunately the weather has put paid to it :( Couse very wet at the moment with recent rain and forecast for Friday is more of it with strong winds. Provisionally moved back a couple of weeks so hoping for an improvement in the intervening period although long range forecast is mixed at present. Can't beat the British weather :p

One of my counting rounds for handicap dropped off at the weekend and was replaced with the gross 78 - Got cut 0.6.

Seems a big cut when playing on a shortened course at the moment!!

Anyway - was looking back in the SGU app and 2 years ago today I was 13.0, today I'm 8.1. Lowest I've ever been.

Aiming for 6.* this year.
Well played Sir

I'm currently sitting at a flat 11.0
Which I am more than happy with over winter. Last 3 rounds (we won't count the comp) were 83, 81, 85. If I can sit at a comfortable single figure by the end of the season I'll be more than happy.
18 months ago I was mainly hitting 90+ consistently. Whole new bag of shinny clubs has helped massively.
