Golf Thread

Played some golf today, the usual day is Friday but the weather for tomorrow looks awful so we went today instead, lovely and sunny for the last half, dry throughout but a touch windy at points!

My driving today was On Point. Glorious :p Also hit a beautiful 5 wood 190 yards (I'd take that with the driver!) which was nice. I started off chipping with the setup/stance I was doing in the lesson on Tuesday but should've practiced it on turf beforehand so quickly switched back to the ol' faithful PW. Unfortunately my putting was utterly terrible :(

Scored 110 overall, but I did 12 putts more than when I scored 106 on Sunday... 12! 48 putts total for 2.7 per hole average.

Fairway wise I disagree with Garmin :p It says 7/13 or 54% but I'm pretty sure 4 of the ones it didn't count were in, and 1 was like a foot off the fairway, if that...

Driver though, oooooooh yeah! :D

Just back from Scottsdale Golf and another amazing experience.
Myself and my friend both had fittings booked and luckily for me the guy before me had cancelled so I had an extra 45 mins.

I wanted a new Hybrid and Fairway Wood. I was honest with the fitter and said my Cobra LTDX Hybrid is actually very nice to use and get on really well with it. He straight away said brilliant. We won't touch it.

So after warming up we tried all available heads on the market. Mixture of shafts etc. Came down to the Titleist TSR2 or the Paradym TD.
The Paradym felt hotter off the face and with the shaft option gave better numbers. Purchase No 1 made.

I then spoke about my Paradym Driver as the fitter had mentioned it. Explained it's difficult at present getting used to the new shaft. Hit a few balls and after changing loft from +1 D to Standard D number improved. Spin came down and flight was more penetrating.

He then mentioned Puring my shafts. Having never heard of this he explained what it was.

WHAT IS SST PURING?

We are very fortunate to have one of only two SST Puring Shaft machines in the whole of the United Kingdom. This incredible machine allows us to analyze the structure of each shaft and determine its most stable bending plane or Neutral Axis. Even the most expensive golf shafts have certain imperfections and irregularities in their structure that can cause off-line bending and twisting during the golf swing. This can lead to an increase in the dispersion of golf shots and can be responsible for less than perfect results even when a good swing has been made.

Our SST Pure Shaft Alignment System identifies the best position for the shaft to be inserted into the club head and doing so, can dramatically improve shot dispersion both horizontally and in carry distance. We have seen some incredible increases in performance even when an expensive shaft has been used, with up to a 90% improvement. An SST Pure-ing machine is present at every single Tour Event as is used extensively by players on the USPGA tour.

For an extra £40 per shaft I went ahead. The purring machine altered the shaft in my 3 wood to give an 87% improvement in consistency whilst my mass produced Tensei AV Raw had an amazing 90.13%. The club had to be dismantled to do this and when putting back together the builder asked if I wanted it slightly lighter in the head. I went ahead and had it slightly lighter. After Purring the shaft it now feels like a completely different beast. More balanced. More stable and hopefully give me even better numbers.

Annoying when you have a couple days off and the weather doesn't cooperate. Instead I had an expensive trip to the range :p

Picked up some water proofs as I figured that if I'm to make the most of my membership it's not always going to be sunshine and smiles.

The trousers I'll likely wear all the time if it's not warm enough for shorts. Maybe keep the jacket in the bag for days when the forecast is up in the air.

I picked up a pair of the Stromberg trousers a few weeks ago and they're brilliant. Played last weekend when it was warm, muggy, and raining - I was expecting to be absolutely roasting with them on but they kept me cool and dry, and I'm always too hot! :D

Game of 2 halves anyone??:rolleyes:

Cruise control on the front 9 - ball striking was excellent - distance control on point.

Had birdie putts on 1,2,4,5,6,7,8 all inside 20ft......

Level par front 9 (the 2nd is a par 4 off the yellows not a 5 as per the shotscope card below) - Birdied 10....to be -1.

Then all downhill from there. Bad tee shot on 12 - should never have looked for the ball but mate found it in the trees and took 3 to get it out and walked off with 8.

Rest of back nine was up and down !!

79 (will be 76 for handicap so another cut probably) - A round of "what could have been for sure"

Mixed bag for me today, Stableford medal off the white tees and full greens.

+5 after first 2 holes and then also another +6 on the 4x par 3's...

On the flip side I ended up with 35pts so there were plenty of good moments, had a good stretch to the end of the back 9 so I hope I can carry that forward into the next game

Weird day at the range. Asked about my missing 54 and they took me to the lost and found bin. Couldn't see it there so they just told me to take whatever... The club I'd lost was some ancient Tom Watson, walked away with a pretty decent looking spin milled Vokey.

After my session I was talking to the pro shop owner. Told him I wasn't a fan of my current irons as hate how they sit and the big cavity makes really cumbersome. He showed me an old set of srixon blades he'd just got in. Let me jump on the simulator to have a crack at them and much preferred how they looked behind the ball. The thin topline took me straight back to the first srt I'd ever owned as a teen. Distances were great as well and I was able to shape the ball much easier. He offered me a straight swap and now have a new set :D

Right guys, please dont laugh, its my first attempt at building a little "net area". It took me around 2-3 hours to build, due to getting suitable mesh / netting and used around 140 zip-ties (no joke!).

The two things are bothering me is, I have no confidence in hitting yet, as there is a lot of space either side of the target, so im going to get another one, to put side to side, and also the mat is garbage..

I really need a "tight" mat (like at the driving ranges) so my club doesnt "snag" and get a flat lie for my club, not all bobbly!

But apart from that I am fairly happy with it! Easy to take down / put up with some hooks and is very firm and sturdy!

excellent man. get some snaps up of the new set.
Glad they're giving you some confidence. Golf is quite a visual game and have to be confident over the ball

Another cut down 0.5 to 7.6.

County Doubles match on Monday - Cause we won our club Doubles last year, we go into the County doubles, 4 ball better ball. Home tie.

Partner is not happy with my cut again

Always like seeing new shiny stuff but are you sure a set of old srixon bladed irons are the way forward??

Blades would be miles down the list of irons to purchase for most amateur's.

They're sort of a nice half way. Thin top line and general profile but still a bit of a cavity at the back.

The problem I had with my previous irons was that I got almost no feedback. They where so thick and forgiving that I couldnt tell if a shot was heeley or off the toe most of the time and as a result couldn't reflect on it.

Took them out for 9 this morning and was pleasantly suprised at how quickly i adjusted. Because I wanted to middle everything I was a lot stricter with my form and hit some blinders as a result. Obviously hit a few that where a little wayward but I knew immediately from feedback the clubs gave me what I'd done and how skewed my angle of attack was. With my G25s I'd have been scratching my head wondering what exactly I'd done wrong.

Think it also helps that the first clubs I owned as a teen where blades.

(those pics make the cavity look like it protrudes more then it actually does)

All good - Not blades at all.

Only thing I would say is your G25s are a much newer iron (circa 2013/14), Those Srixon irons model are around 15 years old (circa 2009)

But like you say - It's what feels good and looks good is half the battle!

Looks/confidence is definitely a huge thing, so if it works for you all good :)

Was out earlier for a round, the 'hard' course and it was a bit of a slog... Scored 117, very meh, had far worse rounds but never really put together the good shots, as in I hit some but felt like 1 good shot to 2 poor shots give or take :p

Utterly knackered after for some reason, feet killing me, tweaked my back at the start of the week and that's now really not happy, not able to play again till next Sunday and kinda thinking that's for the best...

Weather was nice at the end and the best bit is the forecast is dry for 2+ weeks, and sunny/warm, so the Bristol Swamps should dry out a fair bit :p

Some advice here please guys.. I currently have this :

And I dont like (like i mentioned before) the current mat, so..what im thinking is measuring up the size of the hitting mat, cutting a hole (using a stanley) and they having that small hitting mat "embedded" into the big one? If that makes sense?

My point is though, will that mat linked above be ok to hit irons from? I mean the rubber underneath, will it be soft enough to stop my clubs being damaged?

Won our County doubles match 2&1. Tough game giving away 24 shots to one guy and 6 to the other....

Not often I start a week playing golf so that's thrown me playing 17 holes on a Monday morning!! :p

Oh yeah!! Arrived today, about two weeks early!!!

And some MDF sheeting for a base under my mats!

Going to cut out later today the square for the small mat!

And tomorrow once my other backdrop cloth arrives, hit a few balls! :D

Had a lovely afternoon playing yesterday. Weather was glorious here in Birmingham and actually had a bit of rollout on the fairways!

Shot 51 with the new clubs, my lowest score since about 14! 3 putted on the 8th and 9th which was beyond irritating considering I was 2 of breaking 50... still, a lovely afternoon in all. It really is the best place to be when the suns shining and you're playing decent.

Picked up the Galaxy watch 5 pro a few weeks ago and been using the golf pad app to track everything. Really impressed with it and it's definitely helped with my approach shots.
