Golf Thread

Golf is such a crazy sport. I've had a really good short game since starting again last year, especially recently. Anything inside 150 and I'm sorted. Off the tee is a different story. Just atrocious.

Go out this morning and absolutely crush everything off the tee with a 4 iron. Direction and distance spot on almost everytime. Short game however was completely non existent. It's like I've forgotten how to address with a wedge in my hand. Thins and fats a plenty with a good handful of 4 putts for good measure.

Madness.

So shot my best ever score today after playing what was easily my best golf. Frustrating because I had an absolute howler on a few holes, scoring a 7 on two par 4's and a 9 on a par 3 - got stuck in a bunker and the pin was in a rotten position.

But the high/lowlight of the round came on the third hole, par 3. Elevated tee box which always messes with me distance-wise. Plays about 150ish so took a smooth 8 iron and lost it in the sun. Seen it land maybe 3 feet from the hole after hitting the flag, thinking sweet good chance for birdie but was confused how it never bounced miles away because it did hit the flag quite hard.

Upon closer inspection, this is what I find...

Millimetres off an ace...

41 on the front 9
49 on the back 9
90 overall, best I've had so far.

Pleased with that but at the same time it could have easily been low to mid 80s if it wasn't for those bad holes. Mate shot his lowest of 76 so a good day all-round, I suppose!

On the course right now and I hate golf...

101 and I kept the same ball all round, I love golf :p

Edit: Time to expand on my round now I'm back in front of a computer.

Pretty terrible start to the round, shanked my tee shot on the 1st short right of the green in the long stuff. At least I chipped onto the green and two putted for a bogey. Racked up seven at the 2nd. Terrible iron shots were a theme throughout the round, just seem to have lost all confidence in them at the moment. Four putted the 5th for a nine, pace control was lacking on the first and then I raced the second putt back past the hole! Closed out the front nine OKish, bar a 3 putt on the 8th, after that to go out in 53.

Back nine while I still had my share of duffs my driving was, much to my amazement after the other day, OK :) Big fade but I could account for that. Of course I ripped a couple dead straight into the trees on the 13th (where I got a lucky break and my ball bounced out to just off the fairway - I took advantage to make par), and the 17th where thankfully I found it without issue and carried on my way. Par on the 18th to come back in 48! Didn't make worse than a double.

If I could combine todays predictability off the the tee with the driver, my irons from the driving range and my wedges from the par 3 course I'd be comfortably in the 90's. Just need the stars to align :p It's a funny old game...

Out today for the first time in a week so thought I'd put @stephenb back in his place and make sure I'm the worst golfer here :p

Played at The Players by Chipping Sodbury, the Stranahan course, first time there and it was quite nice, and the weather was lovely and warm unfortunately that's where the good bits end for the day.

Played so bad, like that would've been a bad round 3-4 months ago, utterly terrible these days, +51  I could put it down to my bad back but really I just couldn't hit a shot to save my life.

Got a game booked tomorrow but with my back really not sure right now, we'll see, could try to do even worse
