Golf Thread

First game back since getting injured at the end of August, went about as well as I could realistically expect - some good moments and a fair bit of meh. Had a nice run on the back 9 but decided to can it after 14 as a precaution. Hopefully won't be any reaction, fingers crossed anyway..

Still feeling a tad gutted as was in the mix for a few end of season comps but hopefully should be good to keep things ticking along over the winter

46 points..... You'd be shot at dawn at my club with that score....

Well done!

Anything above 40 at mine is prime lynching territory.
That's fair :p

I don't think I mentioned it but that was my best ever round, only broken 100 a small number of times, and several of those only 'technically' as EG reduced 100 gross due to the 'net double bogey cap' on a hole.

Joys of a high-handicapper I guess, played off 34 for that round so having a very very solid/good round throughout leads to those kinda ridiculous scores :D

Played on a course today I hadn’t played on before, fairways were terrible because of all the recent rainfall. I can’t blame the conditions for my poor round, anything from the fairways was topped, can’t stop lifting up just before striking the ball. Tee shots were average, putting was average too, but everything in between was really bad. I’ve had a lesson to try and correct my rocking back, but it seems to be getting worse. Very frustrating!

Last comp of the year for us - course in decent nick considering the time of year.

Yellow tees - played well - no drama. Never really in any trouble.

Probably from memory lowest yellow tee gross score for a while (shotscope have 2nd and 15th as par 5's - but they are 4's from the yellow tees)

Nice birdies on 7 and 12.

Solid way to end the year. Reckon it might be 5.9 tomorrow morning!

Finally found my swing, only took me all of the summer:

My best round yet, very steady, one of the rounds I wasn't keeping score or thinking about how well I was doing, just plodding along, because we played the course in a strange order due to slowness and societies on the course and didn't want to wait behind groups of 4.
I think we played holes in this order, 10, 11, 12, 13, 6, 7, 8, 9, 17, 18, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 14, 15, 16.

Try less = score better. Strange game!

Played on Saturday and got paired with 3 blokes playing in a comp, completely bladdered and constantly holding people up. Was getting pretty heated at one point and the marshal had to be called over to sort it out. I broke off on the 11th and just played through a bunch of people. Completely soured my round and shot 96.

It's the way I approach golf now - no thoughts, only vibes. Seems to be working for the most part!

Make an error - meh, it happens. Just make sure the next shot is better.

It's the age old rant that always holds true. Practice on the range, trust on the course. Whatever swing you have on the day is the one you're stuck with so just play it.

Mental game is 90% of golf.... Don't fight it, I've learned over the year to just accept the "bad shots" that appear.

Been an excellent year of acceptance for me, just make the next one better etc.

Had one round in about 7 weeks I think - not even been to range.... Need to get moving again.

Thought it would be interesting for anyone who wants - Post 3 Targets/aims/goals for your golf this year.... Anything.

Mine are :
  • Currently 8.7 handicap - Want to aim to get into the 6's this year.....
  • Practice/range work once a week - I find time to muck around gaming for an hour or so each night - make one of the sessions a putting/range session
  • Taking stats from Shotscope - GIR was 34% last season and averaged 31.5 putts per round. Improve on both of these stats for 2023 season.
see where thing go for the seasons - Anyone else fancy putting some up??

Reviewing my goals from this thread/season (above quote from 3rd Jan this year) - End of the season for me now. Non counters for next 4 months.

How did I match up my goals....
  • Handicap - 8.7 start of year to 5.9 this morning.
  • Practice range/weekly - probably not again as much as I would like but more than previous years.
  • Stats from Shotscope - Fairways hit from tee up from 36% in 2022 to 43% in 2023.
GIR - Up slightly from 2022, 34% to 37% which still isn't great.

Putting - 31.6 average (2022) down to 30.6 this year. So one shot difference. But one big improvement - 2022 I averaged a 3 putt every 12.6 holes, 2023 I was once every 25.7 holes.

Overall - a great improvement in handicap, confidence in short game has improve vastly, having a good solid putting routine has confirmed that I am a good putter.

Solid season, won nothing mind you..... - but been pretty consistent all year - Practice/keep playing over the winter and see what the next year brings.....

Pretty good numbers there pal. Do you have regular coaching or just tend to hammer technique out on the range?

no regular coaching - I'll probably go to my local pro for a couple of "tidy up lessons" over the next few months but just try and practice once a week where I can but even then I find 50 balls of good quality work is better than smashing 100's of balls about the place.

No lessons since start of the year. Biggest improvements aren't just the swing/technique..... Between the ears.... 100%.

As I've got older (47 next week), I've got a bit wiser ! - keeping emotions in check, removing the negative thoughts and being positive about my play on the course has made a HUGE difference from my 20/30's when I used to get frustrated, annoyed with bad shots etc.

I'm a positive person so I always look at shots/putts as ones I can make - rather than miss etc. The amount of times I hear one of my playing partners say " I knew I was going to miss that" etc - I asked him why once, he said, "I just can't putt" - He can putt, but simply is so negative about it, he's already missing the putt before he's stepped up to the ball.

Can't recommend this book enough - great read - take on board the information and use it.... Very good - Be a Player: A Breakthrough Approach to Playing Better ON the Golf Course

With some time out from the golf (for personal reasons), I have a Garmin R10 launch monitor arriving tomorrow.

Can someone with experience on this clarify if many improvments have been made over the last 1-2 years?

I ask, as some reviews dont favour it? Some say its been better with time? Some say its better with Awesome Golf etc..

So any feedback would be appreciated.

I hope to get back to my local club through the week at some point also! :)

I have R10 - not really used it for months as most of my practice was at chipping green/course etc in the summer rather than driving range.

LASt time I used it was accurate, useful and helpful. For the basics it's very good, but if you want to get more into the spin rates/launch angles you need to know what your talking about /understand them before using that info.

Give me a shout if your not sure. I'm a geek for all that data :D

Totally agree with all you mentioned and feel I'm slowly adjusting myself to that sort of mindset on the course.
Can honestly say that I was horrific last year, as @magicroundabout can attest. Game was so patchy and I was struggling to break 100 at all. Always had good on course instincts but was never, ever comfortable over 150+ yard shots.

My teachers been excellent in resolving that. He decided it wasn't so much a technique problem as much a mindset one, so we worked on a pre shot routine and employed Timothey Gallweys back-hit 1-2-3 technique, it was almost night and day difference. He also had me lean into shot shaping a lot more then other teachers I've had, having me practice that on the range instead of just trying to hit balls straight and long which often results in a breakdown of technique.

Ultimately Golf is about patience, acceptance and positivity. It's why I think it can be so beneficial for people suffering mental health issues. No sport I've played requires as much self belief and perseverance.

Will definitely check out that book mate, thanks!

Just cancelled my Arcos subscription after the free trial and ordered a range finder instead. I like the Arcos app a lot and it's been very useful, but I find the stats a little overwhelming and much prefer taking my own notes during a round. I also found myself second guessing the distances it recommends as it doesn't seem to recognize elevation all that well.

@booyaka you dont happen to use Awesome Golf with the R10 do you by any chance?

I ask because, I contacted AG customer service, and they told me, once I get my new launch monitor (R10) to install the AG app, log on then get in touch and they would transfer the licence from the Rapsodo MLM2 over to the new one..

Now, I have done this, and connected my R10 to my iPhone and iPad (not running the software on both at the same time obviously) and it seems to load into the app fine, and when I go into settings it says lifetime licence and has a tick next to it??

Should I still contact AG and find out more? Or just "use it" and see how I get on?
