Golf Thread

Ouch my back and "golf muscles" (don't lol too much!!) are really hurting right now - been at the range every single day this week fine tuning my game in prep for A: monthly medal on Saturday, and B: the main event being mum's fiancé’s stag weekend at the Belfry coming up at the end of Feb, and being (probably) the lowest handicapper there I MUST take the money!!!

Also, never ever played a course anywhere near as prestigious as the Belfry before, so really want to make sure I’m sharp for the challenge (and I WILL be going for the 10th on the Brabazon in one!).

good bump - my game is still in hibernation but i was at our golf club agm and have been appointed Captain for this year (was vice captain last year).

Nice honour to have for a year i guess!

Played twice last week, think i hit somewhere in the range of 130 on the saturday! After the first hole it was just a case of having a laugh, ground was so frozen they were off temp tees and temporary temporary greens (i.e. full greens shut so they cut proper temps, so frosty they shut the proper temps and just put a hole in the fairway!). Managed a few birdies but it was more to just get out and about. Played on the sunday and it was a lot better on proper greens, managed an 82 but left a lot of shots out there, worst one was a 340yd par 4, i pulled it slightly and it cuts out of bounds down the left, thought the ball was lost so played a provisional then played that one again from the fairway and came off with a 6. Got to the green and my first ball was about 30yds short (can get some decent distances with frozen/frosty ground!) with a simple chip on to an easy flag!

Congrats, Captain is a pretty prestigious position at most clubs!

I picked up a cheap Titleist 909H off the bat a couple of weeks ago and tried it out at the range on a bitterly cold day. As I have a 909-D3, I thought it was worth the £35.

Now I don't know what to do with it. It goes about the same distance as my 5-wood and 1-iron. It goes much higher than the 1-iron, obviously, but height isn't an advantage in the wind or on really fast fairways. It won't be much better out of rough than my 5-wood.

I was hoping it would replace something in the bag, preferably both the 5-wood and the 1-iron so I could carry an extra wedge but all it's done is give me options to consider before I leave the house.

Which means I'll inevitably take the wrong clubs onto the course.

You use a 1-iron!??? Crikey, that is impressive! I thought my swing wasn't two bad, but I'll admit to using hybrids for 1 and 2-irons :-)

1-irons aren't really that scary. Last year I played with a mate who asked if he could borrow it to have a go at a Par-3 from around 190 and first time he'd ever used it he nailed the green. Of course he is an "American" and wears a poncho and a big hat while claiming a 15 handicap ;)

lmao - well, I'm off 6 (5.8) currently, and of course, I've not actually swung a 1-iron before, be nice to have a go - I have been on the lookout for a Mizuno MP26 2-iron to add to my set in case the day turns windy :-)

i used to be unable to hit a driver so used a 1 iron for years off the tee - could hit it for miles in the summer on the links!!

Was gutted when the shaft broke!!!

Lee Trevino: "Not even God can hit a one-iron."

Lee Trevino: ( after being hit by lightning ) "ONLY God can hit a one-iron"

Went to the range today and the missus actually asked if she could come too! She hits quite well for someone who does it once a year or so. One thing about going with someone who isn't good is when you tell them stuff it sets you thinking about whether you're doing that too!

I told her she was lifting her head up too early and then realised I was doing it too although obviously not as badly. Obviously! No, really!

So, consciously trying to keep my eyes on the back of the ball until after the ball had gone really helped keep my irons much straighter.

So that's my tip for the day. Tell someone else what to do and then see if you're following your own advice.

(The 1-iron was getting out to just under the 200 mark today which given the complete absence of roll and the cold air was a pretty decent result for this early in the year.)

Finally decided to treat myself to a new set of clubs, ive had my crrent set since 1996

Wilson RM Midsize, fantastic set, that have served me well.

But today i picked up a set of Callaway X22 tours with a 56o 'jaws' wedge. I hit litterly 100's of balls before i decided with set i wanted, tried Mizuno JPX800 tour and Nike VR Pro combo also, But the callaways were just that little bit more forgiving than the others.

Love em :D ... Roll on the weekend...

I have never been a fan of Callaway, they gear always appear a little clunky, but these i have to say look brilliant, granted not a sleek as say, the Nike VR Pro combo, but much better that any other callaway ive tried.

American Golf, were £449.00, but they priced matched against 'onlinegolf.co.uk' for £399.00 :D

3-PW all with the project X shafts 6.0, the Wedge was £89.00, could prob have got that cheaper, but he threw in a Callaway towel worth £10.00.

Winner.

I've got the 52 degree version of that wedge. It's about the best wedge in my bag for getting drop/stop shots and even managing some backspin on some too. Main problem....... its a ball shredder, every shot peels a bit more cover off the ball. Currently going through a ball a round, sometimes two!

Nice choice of irons, I quite like the look of the Callaways from all angles except the top line, they always seemed a bit thick to me. The X22 is about the best looking iron though, not keen on the orange of the x24. Did you get them fitted or stock off the shelf?

Off away for some links golf action in Scotland for the weekend myself, just loading the car up. The wifeys packing is all done with her playing out gear, my packing so far is my golf clubs, golf outfits and some alka seltzer! haha.

Looking forward to trying the wedge, I've only ever used what came with the set. I use a new ball for each compitition round anyway so not to worried about shredding balls ;)

I preferred the look and feel and looks of the 22's over the 24's and the top edge of x22's is not to thick, for callaway anyway. Mine are 2 degree flat.

Word of warning, if you want custom callaway now (don't know about others) they won't make them, because of the new r&a rules over groves, even though current groves are fine for ameteurs until like 2024 or something. That's what I have been told anyway.

Nice set of bats, my mate off scratch used them for about 6 months but then decided to change to the new Titleist CB's. That wedge will definitely chew the cover off any ball you want to use bar the hardest 2 peice's you can find. Very aggressive grooves.

Im really interested in trying out the new Taylormade MB's, they look really nice and have had great reviews, not too sure im keen on the black screw bit though. Then again im not sure i have the money to be splashing out on a new set yet when i got my last set in Jan 2010. Maybe next season :D
