Golf Thread

Jeez, went round in 50 over yesterday. First time I've played golf in 7 years. Wasn't too surprising for that reason, but still quite disappointed. I used to be pretty good when I was 15 or so. I could feel the swing was still there - generally decent drives and good irons/wedges off the fairway, but it was like I completely forgot how to pitch and putt. The story of my round was 2-3 shots to near the green, 2 pitches and 3 putts. Might try and get over to a pitch and putt for some more practice.

Well I went round in 44 over today. Generally I double bogey most holes and then have maybe 2 holes where my initial drive slices off and it takes me 10 shots. I'm being pretty rigorous about counting drops, rehits etc which my playing partner wasn't at all. I watched a couple of videos and reminded myself how to pitch and that helped a lot.

In a couple of months I should be down to around 30 over where I was before I stopped playing hopefully. Need to pick myself up a new driver as I'm still using a budget (under £15) one from back in the day.

Just wondering what wedges you guys carry (deg wise not make)

Fairly set with my 52 and 56, i've a 58 as well but im after a wedge for touch shots around the green.

Options are.. get a 62 deg and stick with my 58 or replace the 58 with a 60 and get a 64 as well..

So:
52,56,60,64 or
52,56,58,62

Wedge ill be getting is the titlelist vokey

Thanks in advance

52 and 60 for me

Anything above 60 is super difficult to hit i find - my 52 degree vokey I tend to play around with shutting the face a bit for a lower trajectory around the greens (48-50 shut) so I tend to use that for all my touch shots. 60 degree for me is mainly used as my sand wedge or if I need some height if I short side myself etc.

PW - 48
GW - 52
LW - 60

Getting my 52 bent to 54 to close the gap a smidgeon. Have you experimented with opening up your 58 around the greens for touch shots? I don't really see the need for another wedge around the 62/64 mark.

I used to use the 58 around the greens but never got on that well with it.. replaced it with a 60 callaway x wedge which whilst good still doesnt give me 100% confidence.

The callaway 60 is going to my dad as he was going to buy one anyway so which is why i'm after a new one.

I use 52/56 for full shots and my 58 for pitches upto 40 yards or so and am quite comfortable with all these.. I don't like pitching or hitting full shots with the 60 and the new wedge would purely be for around the green hence why i was opting for slightly more i.e. 62/64 rather than another 60.

50, 54 & 58 (other than my 10 iron....err sorry, pitching wedge which i think is 46 degrees!). They are all Ping Tour from the WRX customisation side and have had a lot of the sole/heel ground away (T Grind, if i play with something that's got a lot of bounce/sole then i tend to thin shots a lot) which lets me open them up very easily. I tried a 60 & 64 but just couldnt get on with them and the 58 lets me do all the shots i could want with them anyway.

I just bought a Nike SQ Sumo 2, cracking driver, very forgiving and you can pick them up pretty cheap now.

As for wedges, all i carry is a 48 PW and a 62 lob, i don't see the need to carry lots of wedges, you can adapt.
:)

Out of the two drivers you list i'd probably go for the G15, but if someone is buying you a driver for Xmas then spend a little on yourself and get a proper fitting also as you'll more likely get more from a fitted shaft than getting lucky with an off the shelf spec shaft.

Id also opt for the G15, and thats very sound advice from KefKef, the shaft is the most important part of the club imo, get fit. You won't regret it.

Congratulations to G-Mac for winning the Chevron. Awesome recovery shot on the 17th to stay level at the last and then a great 20' to go to a play-off followed by an even better 25' to win!

Although I would love to see Tiger win again (good for golf to have him back), I'm glad it wasn't in his "own competition". I want him to win in a proper tournament.

Just a little bump for this. Should we carry on with this thread or start a new one for the year? Anyone been out recently? Managed to play on New Years Eve, could tell i hadnt played for a while and took a bit of getting used to being out again. Managed to go out in 15 over and back in for 3 over which was happy with, definately felt the timing was a bit out on the front nine. Only 3 tee-mats in play which was good and no temporary greens.

Don't mind on either keeping this or starting a new thread.

I had my first "outside" round (i.e. not hitting balls at the range) on Saturday, pretty cack to be honest, muddy and wet never gives for great ball-striking, and hit a few sloppy drives. 81, in windy conditions, wasn't too distraught (playing of 5.7 currently).

Just need to make sure I get practicing more and more, have a golf trip to The Belfrey on 25th Feb which I cannot wait for (not ever played a course as prestigious as that before) and I want to make sure I'm on form :-)

Keep this thread i say.
I played for the first time since November on Saturday, a 4 ball at Thornbury, very wet, no temps and no mats, fair play to them. My driving was rubbish, big fades all the way round, irons i hit very well though, short game was good, putting was dire i hate putting on slow greens, we played matchplay for £1each and 20p for bits, won 5 and 4 :)
Sunday my brother and i played Weston golf club, a links, very windy conditions, i sorted my driving out as i had a sudden revelation while in bed what i was doing wrong :D
I had 3 birdies in the first 10 holes, went out in 41 with a 7 on the second, anyway we had to pack it in as it absolutely hammered down on the 14th :(
Gonna start playing a lot more now, weather permitting, wanna get in form ready for the annual Vilamoura trip in April, the courses we have lined up are immense, The Old Course, Laranjal, Quinta do Lago South, Quinta do Lago North and The Faldo course at Amendoeira, we'll probably fit in another course on the rest day too more than likely Old Course again as it's literally 3 mins walk from our hotel.
