Golf Thread

Yep, looks like it! Feel free to bring along a golfing mate of your own if you want. I won't tell them I'm from a computer forum ;). Looking at your scores, I'm not going to be giving you much of a game! I far prefer playing with better golfers but I'm not sure it's so great for them :p.

Is any particular tee time better for you Jason? Personally asap in the morning would suit me better. I could get to the course for 10ish, or earlier if that's your preferred time of play.

There must be someone else in the Midlands that fancies 18 holes on Sunday?! I can pick you up if you're near me or between Studley B80 and the golf course which is Staffs. ST15 0NS.

Thanks for the invite guys, but pretty much booked up for a month or so. Looking to join a club around Leeds, so have rung a load of them up and got some free and discounted rounds which is a bonus, even rang a few clubs we werent even considering to get cheapo rounds of golf! :D

Played on Sunday, had a few beers before playing. Havent been doing too well recently (managed to get into triple figures - 104 - for the first time in 2 years it's been that bad!), was 1 under through 6 with 5 pars and a birdie, only to 'collapse' with double, par, double so was a bit despondant but soon changed my mind when i realised i was still only 3 over for the front nine! Didnt drive the ball well on the back nine (carried my bag which is not a good idea with two fractured vertebrae!) as was getting a bit stiff in the lower back, but still managed 3 more pars. All in a good day, well, except for getting home late and getting a bollocking from the missus! :D

Like I said before I play at De Vere Oulton Hall in Leeds, its quite a nice course and they do a really good membership for people like me who play just once a week or so. The membership is £295 for 100 points and allows you to play at several courses - http://www.devere.co.uk/golf.html :)

Full membership is upwards of £800 iirc. :o

Yeah, it seemed like a good deal to me, but when i looked into it, we only play on a sat/sun afternoon so it would mean we only get something like 10 rounds a year for that cost and i dont really rate the course as a £30 a round place (let alone the £70 they market themselves at!).

If i joined somewhere like Garforth, Sandmoor, Scarcroft etc then i would pay more, but it means i could play at the weekend in medal golf and also just pop up for 9 holes after work during the week.

Had a fun first ever round of golf.
my score for the round was 113 strokes. Even managed to get my first par on the 12th which is a par 4, approximately 240 yards.
Managed to avoid all the 3 water hazards by luck but still hit the ball out of bounds several times so plenty of room for improvement.
Happy overall how it went for the 1st time. Need to get some lessons and more practice to see that score come down .

Played Howley a few times, quite like it but it is a challenge, especially that last hole with everyone watching (or ducking if you over hit it! haha). Out of all the courses in Leeds i rank them;

Alwoodly
Sandmoor
Moor Allerton
Scarcroft
Garforth
Headingly
Cobble Hall
Horsforth
Wike
Oulton
Roundhay
Temple Newsam
South Leeds
.
.
.
.
Moortown (course is ok, really dislike the members attitudes enoug so that i wont play there again!)

Glad you enjoyed it, and you were -5 according to my estimate :D

Absolutely cannot wait to get out tomorrow, I've been putting and chipping up the hall! Weather looks set to be perfect too - 18*C and sunny.

That isn't bad for your first time, I hit 114 on my second round on a par 72 and I am hitting 100 and under on a par 64 course. I have only played 6 rounds of golf so far, but I have had some lessons too.

Had my first go on a nine hole in over 4 years. We both got 7 over which was my best round ever on it. I feel like I could get hooked again quickly and with pay day approaching I might have to go try some clubs out.

Any recommendations?
Feeling good right now :)

Have a look through page 38 of this thread for a few recommendations.

Having been playing the golf of my life the last few weeks the last two outings I'm broken .. completely.

Drives hooking left (which I've *never* done), topping every iron, pushing every chip, can't putt for toffee.

Played 12 holes and probably hit 2 maybe 3 "ok" shots, rest were utter garbage.

It's an infuriating game :(

Hit some shots on the range today, which were pretty much hooking, slicing, topping etc. Spent a half hour having a lesson and most of my shots were some of the best I have hit, and consistently, but I then go back on the range and again, all over the place. :(

An hour later I'm on the course, some really nice iron shots, but mainly here, there and everywhere.

I can probably just about haul my ass out of bed for a 10 o'clock tee time Rob :p

I will double check when I go up on Thursday evening to make sure there's nothing on. I've had a look in my fixtures booklet for this Sunday and it appears to be one of the only Sundays where nothing at all is being played so everything should be fine :)

It's a shame we can't get at least a 4 ball together, surely there must be somebody who wants a cheap game of golf with fellow forum members in the Midlands area?

Literally any other weekend of the year and I would come :p.

Started hooking drives for the first time ever as well recently.
I figured out that if i hit the ball 95% effort i have a high chance of hooking it. If i go all guns blazing and hit it 100% it doesn't hook!

Give it a go, and i mean 100%.. everything you can get into the swing!

All my drives are slices. I just can't stop it, I reckon I've tried everything:

- Strengthening grip in terms of rotating left hand clockwise on the club.
- Opening left foot slightly to open hips.
- Consciously closing face on impact.
- Vardon vs. interlocking grip.
- Slowing down swing.
- Swinging on a flatter sweeping plane.
- Standing closer to ball so I'm not reaching for it.
- Moving ball a few inches back relative to my left heel.

I don't think it's the club / shaft, as I do it with my 3 wood too. I've taken to just aiming way left, which is obviously bad as it's a) masking a fault and b) one day I won't slice it and it'll go sailing o/b.

Incidentally I find the interlocking grip far more comfortable and 'solid' feeling, yet from what I've seen most people prefer the overlapping grip? I can't trust my hands to stay in shape with the vardon. I understand it adds more flexibility? But I don't trust myself with this, my shots are far more wild with it.

I think your "overthinking" things.

Serious the worst swings I make are when I've overthinking things. When I just stand up, setup and swing that's when I hit it best.

Worthwhile getting a couple of lessons or something as a pro will quickly spot what your doing wrong but trying all the above things you listed will only complicate matters.

Yep, I'm 99% sure that's my problem. I played a few holes with a sore back, so played like a dog, and since then I've been over thinking *everything* and I can't hit anything.

Heading to the range tomorrow to just hit some balls .. find it easier to "just swing the club" when I'm at the range .. I don't need to think about finding the ball or killing some guy walking his dog with a hook shot ;-)
