Golf Thread

ive played a few rounds on my own and it doesn't have the same banter and flow but it is still very enjoyable, well worth doing and just as enjoyable!

I play on my own quite a lot, especially in the week after work when i've only got an hour or so light left.
As said above it's a good way of practising different shots.
If i do play alone i usually hit two drives or two balls on a par 3.

I play on my own majority of the time because as above when I finidh work I can get a few holes done.

Brought a day ticket at Mendip Springs 9 hole course yesterday. Get some practice in before I rejoin my local club. Nice little course and is good to get your approach play nailed.

Play on my own through the week when i can, usually manage to find a few mates who want to play on a sat/sun.

Saturdays' ok-ish round

OB on 6 trying to hit the green with my tee shot!:p Hence the 7!!

14/15/16 are poor - dropping 4 shots here is very poor as they are all very very short holes and should be par's at worst!

Also looks terrible with regards fairways hit but a change of my grip and a few tweaks to the swing from the lesson 2 days before have caused that!

Any other skycaddie owners out there?

Not a bad card considering how infrequently you found the fairway, putting saved you. I'm guessing your short game's quiet good?

I played solo today for the first time and I enjoyed it, but I just wasn't hitting the ball very well.
As a comparison I found the fairway on at least 14 holes, but my short game needs work.

Me, but you already knew that :p

The thing I love about the SkyCaddie is all the statistics that you build up over time. Here are my stats for 10 months worth of golf, don't laugh!

Not sure whether to wipe it all and start again for the new season, or carry on building it up?

^ wipe and start fresh for the new season :)

Personally I use Golfshot on my iphone, and it's great. It saves all your stats as well, and is dead easy to use :)

Yeah I think I will wipe it :)

As for phone apps, they're great for social play, but you can't use them in competitions, or at least you can't at our club :(

Skycaddie looks awesome. I have a Garmin S1 atm but could sell that and upgrade to a Skycaddie, the S1 just gives yardages to front, centre and back of the green.
Is Skycaddie preprogrammed with courses or do you have to download them ? (The S1 has about 5000 preprogrammed).
Which Skycaddie do you guys have/recommend ?

You have to download the courses, I have the SG 2.5 and I can have up to 20 courses downloaded at any one time. The good thing with the SkyCaddie is that all the courses are physically walked by their 'mappers', which apparently makes for more accurate yardages as opposed to devices that just rely on maps.

You can find out if your local courses have been mapped here - link

The only downside with the SkyCaddie is the £30 annual membership, but tbh it is a cracking device with a very polished website and great support. For example, one of my friends had an SGX that went wrong due to an issue with an update, and they sent him out a new one before he had to send the faulty one back!

It's fine so long as your club allow it. Ours does, and I'm sure there's plenty of others that allow them :)

As of January 2008 the use of GPS measuring devices got the go ahead from the R&A. This means that at club level the Skycaddie GPS Golf Rangefinder can be used in club competition providing a local rule has been sanctioned by the Club Committee.

R&A ruling on measuring devices - link

And more specifically the ruling concerning mobile phone apps;

Q. What about multi-functional devices, such as a mobile phone, with a distance measuring application?

A. On the course, subject to any club or course regulations, a multi-functional device may be used to phone, text or email – provided the purpose is not a breach of the Rules, e.g. you are not asking for advice.

When an application that measures distance has been downloaded to the device, the application must be restricted to providing only distance information in order to conform to the Local Rule. If there are any other features or applications on the phone that gauge or measure other conditions that might affect a player’s play, such as a temperature gauge, compass or anemometer, this would render the device non-conforming regardless of whether these other features or applications are used or not.

I've got SG5 and it's superb - very good.

As above - you have unlimited access to courses for £30 a year - they are regularly updated as well. They even have the local 18 hole par 3 course attached to the driving range on it!!

As above - our club allows measuring devices, however does not allow the use of iphones etc on the course for yardages as that contravenes the above rule because the iphone can tell you the temps and wind speeds etc.
