Woosh. Played 90 holes last week. 36 on Thurs, 36 on Fri and 18 on Sat! Highlights of the rounds:

26 putts for 18 holes, with 9 x 1 putts and a chip in!

260yd driver off the deck 2nd shot to a par 5 into the wind (we were playing texas scramble on saturday, already had a nice shot middle of the fairway from a team mate, so nothing to lose!)

Only lost 2 balls in 90 holes, 1 out of bounds off the tee (going for a 320yd green in one in texas scramble) and another landed in the rough and we just couldnt find it.

Went to the range with a mate who worked in a number of pro shops, 3rd time down the range he said I looked like I had been playing for a while, for a starter I have some real potential, which is great!

Wasnt following through the ball enough - Saw my distance go up
Right hand wasnt far enough round on the grip - Cured a hell of a lot of my slices
Driver I was standing to far away

He said - get some lessons, you could be really good.
Very very happy. Booked some lessons, cant wait.

Also got the woods my dad gave to me re-gripped, Oh how they had a laugh at me in the shop
"You must be very talented!"
"no? why?"
"these are terrible! How do you hit anything with them?!"
"Well ive only just been given them, Havnt hit anything with them yet"
"...Good luck"

Playing this weekend? I would normally turn out on a Monday, but my shift starts on Monday, so it'll probably be another week before I get to see a golf course again...However, I shall be hitting the range tomorrow and trying to find out what causes my slice...

Played this morning in a Pro trophy qualifier, net 71.
Up to the pro now, he will go out this afternoon and whoever beats his score (net) wins, last week in the first part of this comp he shot 66 gross !!

Turned up this morning for comp @ 9am but cancelled due to a bit of frost on the greens first thing this morning!! Was full greens by 8.30am but since early starters didn't get that it was cancelled.

Anyway - played a bounce game off the yellows below.

A week is a long time in golf - no practise since last weeks awful golf and low and behold - hit the ball really well today.

Good front nine, poor finish due to lost ball at the last trying to carry it 265 over the hill and down onto the flat because the wind was behind. Normally it's a simple lay up at 220 or so but hey ho.

Hopefully playing this course in Linlithgow in the next week or so, looks cracking! (£tenner a round)

I've been playing golf regularly for a year now with some 20+ year old Slazenger XLC irons and looking to get some new clubs in the near future. Last week the club head of my 7 iron decided to separate from the shaft and head into the sky along with my ball! Very embarrassing having to run onto the driving range to retrieve it!

I've got my first lesson on Tuesday evening to try and give me a leg up and improve and plan to take a few lessons before getting some new clubs. Currently still play off a 28 handicap.

I've only just started looking to see what's around and so far the Taylormade R11, Callaway Razr X and Mizuno JPX800HDs have caught my eye. I'm interested to hear what you guys think of these and perhaps suggest some others that would be good for me to try out. I'm not going to say that money is no object but I am willing to spend a reasonable amount to get clubs that will last me for a few years and help me develop.

Any suggestions on good review sites and places online or not to buy new clubs?

Finally, custom fitting. Worth it or not?

Thanks in advance for the help guys.

Reading reviews etc is pointless - it's all about what feels good and what you hit well.

Go to a well stocked local pro and get some irons to hit - and absolutely get custom fitted.

I played a few weeks ago with a couple of guys (not in my normal group) - both had callaway irons (X-22 i think) - recently purchased by both of them and one was 5ft 5 and the other guy was 6ft 4. How can stock club suit either of them?

Anyway - i would certainly check out 3 or 4 you like the look of and then try them. Would certainly add the Ping range into your thoughts as they are custom fitted as standard.

+1 for Ping.

I went around some shops with my friend recently, he was looking for a new set of irons as well, so I got to try a bunch of them too.

What I tried:

Titleist AP1 712
Titleist MB 712
Mizuno JPX800 Pro
Mizuno MP-69 (wow, just wow)
Callaway RAZR X Black
Nike VRS
TaylorMade R11
TaylorMade CB
TaylorMade MC
TaylorMade MB
TaylorMade RBZ
Ping G20 (I have these)
Ping i20

After trying all of these to a reasonable extent I would have to say that, for him, the best performers were the AP1's and, surprisingly, the TM CB's.

TM RBZ and Nike VRS were horrible. Looked and felt terrible, didn't like them at all.

The Titleist MB's and Mizuno MP-69's were just me trying out blades, so tempted to go for a set now after hitting them :(

And yes, always custom fit if you are buying a decent set of irons.

As you say, have your lessons first and then custom fit. Worth every penny. When i got my set i was there for a good 2-3hrs hitting a wide range of clubs, ended up with Taylormade r7's that are 1/4" shorter and 2 degree flat, customer grips and regular shafts. They've done me for a good few years, but i think it's time for a change (i bought them as per your situation, i had been playing about 6 months and wanted a better set of irons, but having played a few years now i want a more responsive set). I cant stand Ping clubs, they are great but i just cant look down on them without thinking they are buckets!

Best clubs about at the moment for me are either Mizuno MP-59 and Titleist AP1's.

Same can be said for fitting of all clubs though, i've had my wedges, putter, driver and 3 wood all fitted. All took a goodly time to fit, but i have been very happy with them since.

Played the front 9 of our local course on the weekend (didnt have time for the full round), wish i had finished it though, Was only +4 at the turn with 23 points!
