Golf Thread

I've been playing golf regularly for a year now with some 20+ year old Slazenger XLC irons and looking to get some new clubs in the near future. Last week the club head of my 7 iron decided to separate from the shaft and head into the sky along with my ball! Very embarrassing having to run onto the driving range to retrieve it!

I've got my first lesson on Tuesday evening to try and give me a leg up and improve and plan to take a few lessons before getting some new clubs. Currently still play off a 28 handicap.

I've only just started looking to see what's around and so far the Taylormade R11, Callaway Razr X and Mizuno JPX800HDs have caught my eye. I'm interested to hear what you guys think of these and perhaps suggest some others that would be good for me to try out. I'm not going to say that money is no object but I am willing to spend a reasonable amount to get clubs that
will last me for a few years and help me develop.

Any suggestions on good review sites and places online or not to buy new clubs?

Finally, custom fitting. Worth it or not?

Thanks in advance for the help guys.

Wilson Staff Di11 are getting rave reviews
Decent price as well !!

Tried both of these a couple of weeks ago, callaways were easy enough to get airborne but personally I didn't have much joy with their accuracy. The mizunos were better for me, quite a high trajectory. I didn't like the feeling on impact, quite a firm contact that I felt going up my (dodgy) left arm.

I'd really recommend the Cleveland cg16's, I thought these felt absolutely fantastic, really responsive. They were a close second to the ping g20 set that I got (the pings were the best all round for me)

Thanks for the club suggestions guys, definately going to add some Pings to the list. Looking forward to trying some out. I'm sitting nicely in 2nd in work's fantasy football at the moment which will bring a nice little windfall to put towards some nice new shiny clubs!

Had my first lesson a couple of days ago which went really well. I didn't realise how poor my posture was. Now I've practiced a little I'm hitting the ball a lot straighter which is a good positive start. Most of my shots previous to the lesson were always slight draws and usually very bad slices when using the driver.

Playing this weekend? I would normally turn out on a Monday, but my shift starts on Monday, so it'll probably be another week before I get to see a golf course again...However, I shall be hitting the range tomorrow and trying to find out what causes my slice...

A few days off this week, so tomorrow I'm on the range, Monday I'll be playing 18 holes, Tuesday I have a lesson and Wednesday will be another 18 holes :D

Played a couple of times last week, was bombing my drives down the middle, but I've comepletely lost my irons :(

No idea what I am doing wrong, but I was either thining them completely or hitting them way way less distance than I normally do. For example I normally hit my 7 iron 150yds all day every day, and last week I hit it 4 times just over 120yds!!

I can only assume the lost distance was because of lost confidence - not committing to the shots, but I'm not too sure.

Either way it looks like I need to head to my local pro to see what I've done.

I'm sure it's a dip in confidence which I'm suffering. Take today for example, first tee and I select my driver...Off the heel and the ball travels left 10 yards and forward 10 yards into a boundary fence, so I use a provisional ball. Again I use the driver and again it goes left, but forward 20 yards :(
26 shots on the first 4 holes and they were par 4, 3, 4 and 4. Back 9 was a big improvement, but I never used the driver again after the first tee shambles.
Driver - 4i slice with my shorter irons pulling to the left...Something's definetly amiss...

It's horrible :( There's nothing worse than standing over the ball believing that you are not going to hit a good shot!

Damn frustrating game :p:D

So, I had my lesson today and it was obvious to my pro that the club face was open at impact which is why I sliced the ball, spine angle was ok and so was my swing plane.
Cured? Well let's say a big improvement has been achieved with a little tweak of my grip and making sure to release the club in the downswing.

After my lesson I got a basket of balls and hit a good 70% straighter with the driver, well pleased :D
Tomorrows game has been cancelled, so I'm going to have to wait at least a week until I can put my lesson in to practice on the course.

Played Penrith last week, lost the match play but won the stableford, mainly due to playing the last 4 holes at 1 under gross. Some lovely holes on the course, only spoilt by a Micky mouse 90yd par 3 in the middle. Supposedly playing Wednesday but will have to wait and see what the weather is like.

Another massively inconsistent round on Saturday again.

Birdied par 5 2nd, parred the 4th after shanking my 2nd shot from 180 yards(a great shot from 140 yards for my 3rd and holed the putt).

Quadupled the 5th after loosing a ball, birdied par 3 7th with best shot of the day - 8 iron to about 2 ft. Followed that with a quadruple at the par 4 8th!!!

Sums up my golf perfectly - wonderful ball striking followed by woeful ball striking!

Played a round today for the first time since having my lesson and I must've hit 14 fairways plus I equalled my previous best round. :D

Out again tomorrow and there's plenty of room for impovement.

Ok peps, get ready for Golf envy............

I went to Remedy Oak yesterday (with Skoda) omg what a place! Did not play great, but did not detract from one of the best courses ive ever played in my life, As good as the west course at Wentworth to give you a comparision.

Considering the rain that fell over Sunday and Monday, the course held up really well, if you ever get the chance go play it!

Some piccys i took (only took my compact camera)

Got out for only my 3rd round of the year on Saturday just gone since shoulder surgery - happened to be the Sussex Golf Pav Trophy 1st round (it's a 36 hole inter-club scratch golf comp - Ryder cub style for all golf clubs in Sussex).

Putted like utter trash in the pairs in the morning, and me and my partner got beat 3&2 by Rustington's premier pair (both 2 handicappers) - not bad really in all honesty, but Tom and I felt like we should have taken them if we'd holed a few of the SIX, yes SIX missed puts inside 4 feet!!

Afternoon singles came and what a change for me personally - 3 under through the first 4 holes, holed a 20 footer from he fringe on the 1st, 10 footer just off the green on 2nd and a 20 footer on the par 3 4th - nice, 4 up through 4 then, thanks! Eventually ran out a 6&5 win and very chuffed with that thank you.

Team score on the day, sadly we lost 8-4. Not bad really as we are a small golf club playing away from home, with our lowest handicap being 3 and a 9, 10 and 11 in the team. Compare it to a few clubs (like Worthing for example) where the highest handicap is likely to be scratch and we're lucky to win a match, let alone progress in the competition - all great experience though and even the dour weather didn't dampen our day.

We'll now move into the Plate competition (think Champions League down to Uefa Cup), with another away draw (not sure who it is yet), and we'll hopefully have a shot with this one.

Hoping to play 18 later today. Played a few holes Tuesday afternoon in the wind. Managed to par SI1 off the back sticks too.
New Titleist clubs i picked up last month are going great, much better golf now especially driver and rescues getting more distance and better dispersion.

Just need to practice as off to Vegas for 5 days golf in 2 weeks. Should be getting off the plane about this time.
