Golf Thread

Played jekyl and hyde golf on sunday. I'll put par of hole, my score and putts....
4, 6, 3
4, 3, 1
3, 4, 3
4, 4, 1
5, 6, 3
4, 3, 1

It carried on in pretty much the same way all round, par or birdie followed by double or worse! One thing though, the approach shots are peppering the pin, just need to tighten the driving and have confidence in my putting (had a 26 putt round this year already!)

Thinking about buying a new driver as my King Cobra 8.5 degree loft is pretty much nigh on impossible for me to hit straight. I've actually reverted to using a 3 wood because of it.

How much more forgiving is, say, a 12 degree loft driver over an 8.5? I realise that it's my technique causing the problem, and not the club, but I really need something that's going to help my game instead of just reaching for the 3 wood every time. The shorter par 4s aren't a massive issue, as I can just go 5 iron instead of a 7/8, but the par 5s end up killing me as my distance of the tee isn't respectable.

A lot more forgiving.
Why are you using an 8.5 ??
You are gonna need a swing speed of 110mph+ to get any joy out of that.

I would say get down to your local fitting centre, driving range, golf store, pro shop, whatever and get fitted, i bet you walk away with an 11 or 12 degree.

:)

I would say, as above go and try them out, but you are probably best off with something around the 10/10.5° mark. My issue with going for a 12° is that it isn't going to give you that much of an advantage distance wise over your 3 wood, which is likely to be 15°.

I have a 10.5° and am seriously considering dropping to a 9° as I naturally have a very high ball flight. I was originally thinking of just changing to a stiff shaft but I honestly don't think I have a fast enough swing speed to carry it off.

As with anything in this game, you could require a completely different setup.

Here are some stats i found on the net regarding loft, distance and length.

65 mph

LOFT-------CARRY

9----------107
11---------110
14---------127
16 *-------128 *

* Ball spin increased by nearly 70 percent,
to an ideal 2,900 rpm.

75 mph

LOFT-------CARRY

9----------146
11---------148
14---------149
16 *-------152 *

* Slower swings need higher launch (17 degrees)
to keep ball in the air.

85 mph

LOFT-------CARRY

9-----------173
11 *--------180 *
14----------178
16----------174

* The 11-degree yielded higher ball speed (124)
vs. the 14- and 16-degree clubs.

95 mph

LOFT--------CARRY
9-----------201
11 *--------210 *
14----------204
16----------198

* The 11-degree improved launch angle by
2 degrees (12.6 vs. 10.5).

105 mph

LOFT-------CARRY

9-----------234
11 *--------238 *
14----------228
16----------222

* 9-degree yielded better spin, but the 11-degree
launched best.

115 mph

LOFT-------CARRY

9----------257
11 *-------259 *
14---------244
16---------240

* Launch angle with 11-degree was in a better
range (11.5 vs. 9.5).

Had my first round today in about 2 years and really enjoyed it.

I had about 3 pars which I was chuffed with, I also had some complete nightmare holes but it didn't bother me because I was outside in the sunshine :D!

I've been bitten by the golf bug again :D. I may have lost about 10 balls today

*snip*

Some really interesting stuff there. Looks like for most scenarios the 11° is ideal, unless you have a super slow swing speed.

I guess maybe I should just stick with the 10.5° and chat to the local golf stores about possibly changing to a shaft with a different kick point to lower my trajectory.

Don't get me wrong, I hit it well and a good distance, but on windy days that high ball flight costs me a lot of distance.

So I took the advice here and went to American Golf with a budget of around £150 for a new driver. They hooked me up to their swing machine to test for my swing speed, and also to give advice of the correct loft based on ball flight etc.

As expected, I was hitting it pretty low so they had me test a 10.5 degree and that gave a much better ball flight, as well as a bit better consistency (less duffers!!!) they also clocked my swing speed at around 98-99mph average.

Tested a few clubs, the Ping G15, Cobra S3 and a couple of others with different shafts, but came away with the Cobra S3, 10.5 degree, stiff shaft as that felt the best. Also had me hitting it the more consistent.

Quickly went down to the driving range and i'm pretty happy with it. No way near as many bad shots, and when I did hit a bad shot it just took some distance off and went a little left/right instead of like a banana :p By no means a miracle club and I realise my technique needs work, but at least i'll have the confidence to actually use it on the course.

Great day for golf, if a little breezy.

Another up and down round for me - 3 drives over 300 yards today but counts for nothing as to may double bogies today.

HOWEVER - I played with a couple of the usual lads I play with on a Saturday morinng and witnessed a mate of mine shooting scratch 68 minus 8 for net 60!!! Off the back tee's (6700 yards - par 71)

Super impressive round and one of the best rounds I've seen, 34 out, 34 in - round included 6 birdies, 2 bogies and 10 pars.

^^that is an awesome round. Always nice to hear peeps stories about conquering golf courses. Being such a golf nut, I can totally empathise with shooting a great score - the feeling is fantastic (oh, and wish I could hit it 300 yards! :-))

The sun is out. I now need golf shorts. Any one recommend anything?

Beginning to get my "new" (been there a year now) home course figured out finally. Had a decent 72 there last week, and then shot -5 66 better ball with a mate to take a £40 drunken bet off two other friends on Wednesday this week. One of the guys we played against used to be off a 9 handicap, and we handed them 11 shots each.... big mistake after we were 3 down at the turn, however a 4 under back nine sorted the men from the boys haha. Large amount of ribbing has started :-)

Get some Dunlop ones from Sports Direct.

Cost about £4 and cant see them lasting very long but not like there's much opportunity to get them out in this country ;)

Nike do decent golfing gear if you're looking to pay a bit more.

Guess where I went today ..........

Was awesome :D

I've been bitten by the equipment upgrade bug :(

How often do you guys look at changing your clubs, specifically irons? Does the technology change drastically year on year? I'm still using some Wilson Deep Red 2s that are around 5/6 years old .... was considering changing them out for something a bit newer.

I have upgraded all my equipment from Taylormade to Nike but have brought R11s. Cost a fair bit but worth it.

+1 for R11's. They are a wonderful club.

I've basically always had Mizuno irons, R series woods and Titleist wedges. I've had Wilson FG Tour irons for the last year though, but these were bought mainly because of the shafts in them. I'm still recovering from a shoulder injury (had operation beginning of this year to sort out) and the irons had light weight Nippon shafts. There were simply sublime to hit, plus I've moved from Mizuno blades to these which are more of a cavity, so slightly easier to hit.

Regardless of the shaft though, I recommend the Wilson FG Tour iron, lot of club for the money.

I have recently upgraded my irons from Taylor Made RAC OS 2's to Taylor Made Burner 2.0's and my driver from Taylor Made R7 Draw to Taylor Made R11, wedges are Taylor Made RAC's.
Had my previous irons for about 5/6 years.
