Golf Thread

Don't even go there with the damn shanks!! Mine were so bad last week that I abandoned my round after 12 holes - 1st time ever :(

Must've shanked 6 times in 9 iron shots, they are a total nightmare and so destructive - hateful :(

Hi troops!

Managed to get some of the afternoon off so went down and just did the first 9 holes of a local course.

I managed 49 shots. TBH I'm actually quite happy with this as I did the full 18 a week or so ago and managed 106.

Yes i'm still a newb (even though I started this thread years ago :P.....not played for a while)

I got a friend to film my swing - ITS HORRIBLE. I seem all 'bunched up as if my shoulders just don't turn :(

I'm thinking of having a few more lessons. The last time I had lessons all it did was completely mess me up and made me stop enjoying golf. I've now moved so it would be at a different course and different pro. Do you think it's worth it?

It's got to the stage where I don't use a driver - AT ALL. I tee off with a 5 hybrid, it used to at least go straightish about 180yds but now it can go anywhere.

Try this guy, http://www.free-online-golf-tips.com/ he helped me with the shanking, it's not gonna be a magical fix but at least you will know the cause and effect.

Managed to finally go and play some solid golf yesterday. I didn't rush it i went thru my pre shot routine correctly and shot a 3 under 67 gross. It was an awesome feeling rolling in the par putt on 18 :)

Great round dude.
Who do you normally play with ?
If your'e first team standard, i suppose you'd know Ryan Carlier, Ryan Jones, Simon Dempsey, Chris Mannings-Hill, Andy Nichols, Otty, maybe Nick Carter although he's left now.

Cheers man.

I normally play with Lewys Charles or Dave Collard and Simon Garlend, Dempsey and Joe Dale on occasion. I know Ryan Carlier but shall I say due to an incident we no longer talk, Ryan Jones yes and majority of the rest. Its my first match tonight hoping weather holds out.

I've learnt more over the past few days from that website and a few YouTube videos than i ever did having lessons from a bad instructor. My swing has completely changed. I now do a 'golf swing' instead of a 'golf hit'

Starting to improve my confidence massively on the range. Hit 40 balls today and I was happy with 30 of them. The other 10 I fluffed in true style, either hitting the bah wall or smashing it.....4yds infront of me :p

Playing a game tomorrow so hopefully I do better.

With the driver... I was the same up until about 2 weeks ago. Couldn't hit it for toffee so just left it in the bag. You name it, pop shots, horrible banana shaped slices hooks, too steep, too shallow, it was horrible.

I think the main reason I can actually hit the thing now is;

A) Got a higher loft (10.5), got it setup properly, shaft etc
B) Made sure my setup routine is correct, every time. The ball was too far back in my stance, shoulders weren't aligned, club was too close to my body, grip was too weak. a lot of setup issues.
C) Practice :)

I'm certainly not nailing them down the fairway every time, by any stretch of the imagination but i'm so much better with it than I was before it's like night and day.

Nice to hear it dude, keep at it.

Captains Day tomorrow (today), off at 10:26, hope the weather is ok (not too windy) and the blimmin' shanks stay away :D
Should be a laugh though, i hear they are having beer and food tents set up on a few holes !!

Looking for some advice, I'm thinking of swapping out my my odyssey white hot #1 for a ping karsten anser x, I've had a quick go in store and it feels good, nice sound off the face and the ball seems to release off the face quicker than my WH, does any one have some real world feedback on these, it's a big move changing a putter.

costly initially but go for a Scotty Cameron.

You will NOT be disappointed. I can honestly say having owned my Scotty for 5 or 6 years now - I don't think I will ever change it.

Quality is superb, looks like new after that length of time and it's superb.

People don't bother about dropping £200/£250 every year on a new driver but think spending that on a putter is crazy! It's not - give it a go

In my search for new irons, I've filtered it down to:

Taylormade burner 2
Wilson staff di11
Nike slingshots
Cobra S3

Anyone have any opinion on any of these? Budget is around 300-350.

Going down to American Golf tomorrow to hit a few and get a feel.

The only way is to try them yourself, and see what YOU think :)

I'm a Mizuno man when it comes to irons although I guess they could just be out of budget unless you go down the second hand route.

Forged irons f.t.w ;)

Playing Alwoodley in Leeds tomorrow, played it before and have to say it is one of my all time faves, pushes Ganton pretty close for top course in Yorkshire. Alwoodley is currently 52nd in the top 100 and Ganton is 17th, but there isnt really that much difference in them.

Plus it's a corporate golf invite so doesnt cost me anything, free Bacon etc too! :D

Big fan of my Wilson FG Tours, although I have "speshal" light weight Nippon shafts installed - also agree with Coupe, if it wasn't for the way I hit the Tours I'd have Mizuno's every day of the week. Best irons out there in my opinion.

Never hit any of the above, but as people have said, it is entirely a feel / confidence thing with any golf club. Don't worry about the brand, get something you can hit the shots you want.

Just had an invite to this place on 27th June

Wow!!! Looks amazing - enjoy it mate!

I've been laid up with appendicitis over last couple of weeks - hoping to get back out on Sunday morning in one of the comps.
