Golf Thread

went out this morning around 530 to get a handful of holes in before work, my short game practicing is really paying off as i am making decent contact with the shots and putting is no more than 2 putts. I used to thin a lot of shots or chunk them so happy, plus the clubs make a lovely little clicking noise when hit out of the middle :) within 100 yards i'm accurate with the wedges, maybe not so much as the lower handicappers will be but i'm hitting the green which is enough for me.

Off the tee is my big problem for loosing shots, general iron play once i've tee'd off is i'd say 90% ok, 5% lovely and 5% thinned so need to figure that out a little but i am starting to see the rounds and practice bringing scores generally down.

Playing the open at my club on saturday as found someone who will play it with me, he's not played in a comp and never played stableford so a 4BBB is a decent way to start, we are both playing of 19 so that'll help too.

bit of a mixed bag in the last week. Nett -2 in the comp, didn't win but 16 decent holes, 1 bad hole and 1 meh hole - going 7, 6 at 16 and 17 meant a 3rd place finish instead of 1st place. 2nd time this year that's cost me a win, a blow up out of nowhere.

Lost our doubles matchplay 2 & 1 - I was playing to my handicap but one of the opponents was about -5 his handicap, he played so consistent. Was a good game. They made back to back monster putt birdies to go from 1 down to 1 up. My putting was mince but the rest of my game was ok.

Had the 1/4 final of the singles matchplay a few days later and won that 6 and 4, again played pretty much to or slightly under my handicap. Have a few weeks to get the semi final played and it's against someone I've never played a round with. Here's hoping I can keep my steady form going.

Club champs this weekend. Course is cooked. Dead everywhere, lots of trees have sucked it dry.. Greens are great as they are watered daily but consistency is impossible when you hit a decent drive and it rolls 50 yards into the trees of takes a huge bounce sideways.

Not really holding out much hope. I'm playing well atm but I know that the course will decide who wins or loses.

"Accidentally" bought a new 3 iron....

Mizuno Pro Fli-Hi Golf Utility 3 Iron - Seems a crazy deal on Evolution Golf - £230 new, but 20% off during the Open promotion and cashback of 8% as well.

Current Titleist 250u just isn't working for me - Not forgiving enough for me, it's much more aimed at really good ballstrikers etc.

Will sell it on in due course but used to have an old version of the Mizuno 3 iron which I loved and regretted selling it a few years ago.

Should get a work out over the weekend with it, Friday night away game in the quarter finals of the County Handicap team matches, Saturday medal, Sunday is our big Open comp.

Got a long service reward from work so I decided to treat myself to a new putter, I have wanted to see what all this Zero Torque is about. I tend to suffer from pushing a lot of short putts so interested to see if this can help my confidence! I opted for the new Odyssey Tri-Hot S2S Jailbird, I love the black and red look and looking forward to putting it into play on Saturday!

You try a few out or just go for it? I have a taylormade spider but do regret not trying some others
Look away now.....

It reminded me a bit of the chap who scored loads where he putt of the green and then chipped it over a few times not to long back

New 3 iron was nice tonight - quick 15 holes in 2hr 30 minutes.

All time par on the 13th. Blasted driver OB - 3 off the tee.... Hammered driver downwind/rock hard fairway like 350....Gap wedge to 20ft, holed putt for par 5 (eagle with second ball)

Full weekend of golf ahead....

I tried a few ZT putters , some of them are hideous like the DF3 and can't get past the looks of it. Currently using the Spider GT which I get on OK with the longer putts but just seem to struggle hitting a consistent stroke on the short putts. I'm intrigued to see if ZT can help my game and as it was basically free trial not much to lose.

Michael Kim shooting a 59 at the 3M open. Birdied the last 4 holes to do it. You don't see those very often and with the next best rounds of the day being a 63 and two 65's it wasn't like everyone was going low

He's a great follow on twitter (X app)

Really insightful, good comments, breaks things down. Seems like a great guy.

Urgh - Quarter Final of county matchplay last night..... lost 6-0 absolute pumping away. :(

Certainly not ideal - I lost 2&1 - played solid but greens were very slow which never suits me, and just struggled to get the ball to the hole all night. Couple of the other boys lost 7&6 and 8&6....

Will need to be an epic comeback on Thursday night in the home leg!!!

Two week enforced absence due to undergoing a minor procedure at the hospital the other week. Come back and shoot a new PB of 77 (+6) off the yellows :p:D. +1 on the back nine which so easily could have been a couple under but for some putts which lipped out.

A scruffy double at the first hole but then went on a run of pars and didn't make worse than bogey the rest of the round. Just the one birdie, a very nice 30ft up the hill on the par 3 15th. A couple of ropey strikes but everything else a solid 7/8/9 out of 10 and straight.

Should lose close to a shot off my handicap which means I'll have achieved my aim of getting out of the teens. Whether I can keep it there....

Edit: 6.8 differential, down to 12.2

went out yesterday, mixed bag as i hit my handicap par (happy with that bit) but made a couple of **** selections against my better judgement leading to two triple bogeys. One was hoping i could hit my 60degree well which i thinned into some thick bushes and the other was trying to cut over a little bit of out of bounds to make a par 4 short and well it went out of bounds. i score all my rounds on the england golf app if i go out with someone so should play a little safer.
The chap i have lessons with has shown me the videos from my first lesson with ( a month and a bit back) to my lesson on Friday and its nice to see some good improvements. He's not much of a salesman as i've mentioned i wouldn't mind some woods but he said my current 4 hybrid is a better choice for the courses i play and i should master that, to be fair when i hit it well its a decent club, helped me par both the longer par 5s yesterday.
Strange how golf changes mindset as back end of last year i was aiming to get mid 20 handicap and accepting of doubles now i'm only a bit lower hcp and frustrated if at least don't leave a par opportunity. guess for the lower hcp's getting any form of bogey is frustrating.

Nipped out before and its far to windy. Not sure how people play in it when its like that. Even stood on the tee box staying still is a challenge, putting hard going etc. I thinned some shots, hit some shots chunky and hit some well. stopped playing after 6 holes just wasn't in the mood.
Need to find what works in the wind, maybe a ping crossover or something for the t as i won't be able to launch that and figure out how to play punch type shots.

I think I've come 4th/60 in div two of the club champs, 7 shots off the lead over two days and instead of being happy, do you know what I'm thinking... God damn, I know exactly where I left some crap chips or poor putts out there and I should have won.

I really have a poor outlook on life.

nipped out this morning and played a handful of holes, hit a decent drive in the end. i just don't get why i keep falling into a out to in club path after getting it right for a bit. Has anyone tried the TRS slider and found that helps?

Shabby weekend of golf.

Saturday medal - Very windy and a bit wet, played poorly - lost 2 balls at the 5th so that was an NR.

Sunday was our big Open - 150 players - full field. Hit the ball better for sure - greens have come on loads with some rain and a decent cut. Strange hole lead to me NR'ing again.

Pulled tee shot left at the 9th into trees, provisional around the same place. Didn't find 1st ball, found 2nd.... Tried to fire it thru a small gap - hit the tree and went 10 yards sideways into some deep rough. Went to look for it - guess what - find the 1st ball sitting up like a coconut  - Didn't find the 2nd ball which was the ball in play.... So another NR.

Prizes on every hole - I hit driver / 3wood to 6ft on the 6th into the wind - thought that might hold up for the day as it was play tough.... Nope +1 player came in and said he'd beaten my.... Driver, 6 iron to 2ft....:(

Anyway - Thursday night home leg of quarter finals - trying to over 6-0 gubbing on Friday (need the same score and some massive wins to win on count back)

Handicap going up was 5.5 three weeks ago - now 6.2 and likely to go up again this week if I play as my best score from last year will drop off.
