Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [12 - 16th January 2013]

God I'm fed up of this give him a chance stuff, Have I said sell him? Have I said he wont come good eventually? All I'm doing is calling it like it is, or am I not allowed to do that because he's a new signing?

So far he's been crap. He was crap before the injury, he's been crap since the injury. We've played him in his preferred position of off the striker, we've played him in a 3 man midfield, we've played him in a two man midfield and we've played him wide on the left and so far he's been largely crap in every single one of them. Like I said prior to kick off today I challenge anyone to tell me a game where he's been more good than bad?

I disagree, I think he did fairly well today.

Kagawa has had some decent moments. The odd good touch here or flick there, but overall he's not been a strong addition to the squad. Too often today he wasn't playing left enough and evra had to offer the flank as and when he could. He's been a bit meh so far.

Not sure how welbeck got Man of the match award.

Quoted for posterity.

Good for you, Man U will win the title easily.

people still writing teams off this early? How many times last season were people claiming that various sides had it wrapped up?

Anything can happen, a bad injury, a player hitting a run of form, one side having European commitments...they can all change things.

Perhaps take your own advice. How many seasons now have you written your own team off after less than 10 games?

Kagawa clearly has talent but im not sure how much he's enjoying the type of football we play or/and his role in the team. His body language isn't always great nor is his effort imo.
However I thought he had done ok before his injury and should we ever stumble across a system that gets the best out of him then the potential is there

Seems OMS called it right about giggs/scholes

It's nice to be appreciated. :D

As for Kagawa, he is a very tidy player in that he rarely gives the ball away but that is because he has been very unambitious so far. From what I've seen of him at Dortmund, he'd like to play 1-2s with the striker and get furthest forward but so far he's held back from doing that for us. I expect he's just settling in and we'll begin to see the best of him soon.

Doesn't make your point any less ridiculous. Welbeck was picked today to put pressure on the Liverpool defence when they tried to play the ball out and force mistakes which he did with aplomb. He contributed well in and around the area and worked hard all game. Yes, he should have done better with the couple of chances he got, but then so should have RvP.

There were plenty of players that had worse games than Welbeck but the fact that people on here constantly single him out for criticism regardless of his performance makes me laugh.

Difference is RvP has scored 10 in the last 10 games (and actually scored in 9 of them) - when Welbeck does that then no-one will have any means to complain.

Some of his passing was good, no question - but majority of his game is questionable especially for what he is meant to be, which is a striker. He had two (arguably 3) good chances today and ******* them all up badly - either with bad touches, bad decision making or being way off target

Yes others werent that decent yesterday, that is also true - but time and time again Welbeck is the notable flaw in a flowing attacking threat and Ive read and seen enough from yesterday's game without seeing it live to know thats the case. Still believe Chicharito would have done exactly the same job better yesterday than Welbeck, and probably scored at least one of the chances, but that is just guessing from his current form

Because he was man of the match

Stats aren't the be all and end all and seeing that site rates Valencia, who has been garbage this season, over someone like Cleverley says it all.

You're entitled to your opinion but it is too one dimensional for me to take seriously.

Because its rating what actually happens on the pitch.

Valencia might not of made a lot of assists, but he hasn't given the ball away, and made lots of interceptions and tackles so has been doing good work, for me, that's not his job, and like you I believe his job is to be firing crosses in and scoring goals.

Cleverly has a high pass completion rate and not a lot else, so his rating is quote low.

Danny doesn't score, doesn't have a particularly high pass rate, doesn't win that many aerial
battles, doesn't make that many interceptions, doesn't make many tackles, doesn't get many assists, doesn't make that many dribbles, so he doesn't score very highly.

At the moment, what ever good stuff he does, and I will concede he has some good moments, is out weighed by the fact that his overall play isn't particularly good and he doesn't score.

Welbeck was rubbish yesterday. Apart from playing a pass in the build up to Uniteds first goal, he did nothing of note.

He lost the ball far to many times ( a couple of them leading to Liverpool counters) and his composure when picking the ball up in a promising/goal scoring area is awful.

I don't watch every United game but almost all of the games i have seen this season have had Welbeck playing and he is the most frustrating to watch by far.

That plonker for Stoke who scored two OG and missed a penalty, bad day at the office or what!

I think the move in the second half summed up Welbeck perfectly. He flew down the wing from just inside our half with a great display of pace and strength....then mucked it up and dribbled the ball out of play behind their goal. it doesn't matter how many people you run past if you have no final product. His work rate was excellent yesterday (well in the first half) and that's why he started, he was useful but ultimately it puts a lot more pressure on whoever else is playing to actually do something that will help us win the game (create or score chances basically)

That was truly fantastic run, not in quality, just the overall comedy of it. I see someone do that and I just think "Walcott" :p

The fall was so pathetic at the end, it wasn't difficult, he wasn't trying to beat his man, he just miskicked it and fell over like a spas.

The only things he ever does are like that, sometimes he'll run down the wing, but then he'll screw up embarrassingly badly. He did similar for England, half way line or so he flicked it over a player, ran after it powered towards the box, then got to a point he needed to make about a 2 yard pass to someone who would have been through on goal, and he underhit it by about 1.5 yards. Thing is, running in a line isn't much of a skill, anyone can do that bit, not anyone can do the final pass/cross/shot, Welbeck can't do anything that you know, requires actual footballing talent, running in a line, sometimes, the rest, nope.

Very happy with the win yesterday but our strikers need some more finishing practice. Abysma penalty and numerous one on ones really should have been converted.
Barry and Milner our stand out players im, Zabaleta played very well as well.

In real time Kompany looks like he does a bad tackle so I understand the red. The FA should now use the video and rescind it.

Christ some grim reading on stuff that went on in the crowd, just cant understand the obsession filled with hate

I was at the game. My first Liverpool Manu. I wasn't expecting hugs and kisses but it's just mindless idiocy. It's put me off football tbh. You're average fan is a complete tool who I wouldn't give the time of day in any other context. Some really vile individuals. I was also surprised how universal it was, in no way can it be attributed to "a small minority".

What's said has lost all meaning it's said so often. It's complete nonsense, but offensive nonsense nonetheless. Most of the people round me spent little time watching football a concentrated primarily on abusing people a few yards away. Not a nice atmosphere.

There are plenty of idiots and it is sad but I wouldn't let it spoil your whole experience, the atmosphere was still good minus the idiotic chants.

Welbeck is a bit like the reverse Hernandez from a couple of years ago, Champions League outside the box and Championship inside it. A lot of the time his brain and feet don't seem to be connected properly. However, by all accounts he works very hard in training and you can't not improve with Rooney, van Persie and Hernandez around. He is just suffering classic second season syndrome at the moment, he either needs to get a goal and get back into form or just have a summer off. I've no doubt he will come good for us.
