GT200 GTX280/260 "official specs"

Yes mate we really should wait and see how a 9800gx2 compares to a set of graphics cards costing £450/£900 and £1350 respectively

£400, £800, and £1200. charging an extra £70, a ridiculous premium, for what? So they can tell you to drop your pants and bend over?

Either way, at £400, or £470, they're still a massive rip off, and those who bang on about "well it's the fastest single GPU card out, so it's justified" are kidding themselves. It's been said before, nv is just hurting PC gaming. Since they seem to pay off devs to 'support' their hardware more than they 'support' other companies' hardware, we're gonna see games written for NV cards that most people won't or can't buy, while NV pretty much neglect their 'lower' cards. I think that in a few months NV are going to be saying '8800GT what? What's one of those?' and basically stop supporting it like they've pretty much stopped supporting G80 cards.

Oh dear indeed, I was so hopeful for these cards as well.

I don't get it, why is it a rip-off ? This card is significantly faster than previous generation top single-GPU card. What were you expecting ?

If it was so easy to make a faster card for less, don't you think that ATI would have done it ? Their new single-GPU cards will be significantly slower.

But its slower than a current, cheaper gfx card.

Until they are out and we see a review, we don't know how much slower they will be really - we can only guess.

And 500 for a card is just to much. It isn't even DX10.1. I would rather have a card 20 percent slower (for example) and be 200 pounds cheaper!

That is a fair point. If you think the card is too expensive, don't buy it, nVidia will release cheaper models in due time. This card is the high end, it will not sell in huge numbers, but it will enable cheaper models that will be faster than current cards.

8800gtx was the top end and is still sought after (for good reason if you like high res/aa/af). It has stood the test of time like few other gfx cards. My gtx cost £330 probably 2 years ago and i think that was money well spent, can anybody expect NV's latest card to be cutting the mustard in 2 years time?

Its up to ati. If they are far off the performance then we might have another card for another year or more.

Don't forget you're comparing a single GPU card to a double GPU Card. I'd wait until wednesday when 3d guru is releasing the SLI and tri-SLI reviews of the GTX 200 series before making any premature judgements when comparing it to a different league ;)

By that logic then if a 4850 in crossfire beat a 280 GTX that wouldnt be fair as there in different leagues? As was said later on by kylew the price ultimatly determines it's league. How it goes about it doesnt really make much of a difference (I remember having this argument with someone when I first came here about a 3870X2 Vs 8800Ultra).

Think of it as two options rather than two cards facing off to each other. If option one is quicker and cheaper, and serves your needs, why pay more for the second?

In the anticipation of GTX280 I put my GX2 on sale last week. Viewing the benchmarks results and reviews I am actually happy I didn't sell GX2 since GTX280 seems to be often even slower. Anyway it does not justify its price.

Come on people, have we ever been asked almost 500 quid for a GFX card? This is bloody ridicules! And don't tell me about recession :)

I remember i paid £410 for my ASUS 7800GTX TOP, and around £400 for my Gainward 8800GTX but that was after the price dropped a bit.. I'm just not happy with the overall perfomance of the 280. I was probly in dreamland but i had my hopes set a little higher.

I just realised the target market for these graphics cards! SLi GTX280's for above 30FPS at 2560x1200 in Crysis! Okay, but what does the rest of us who don't rob banks full of winning lottery tickets for a living do?

£400 it is not £500.

These threads make me laugh, read from the beginning every-ones like "cant wait for this card is going to be amazing", "I'm deffantly going to get one".

Now becourse the price tag is out the roof (yes I do agree its expensive) and people cant afford them, the general conversation has changed to yeah but my 8800gt's are as quick, or I'm going to get a GX2.

I wonder if the orginal conversation of "I want one" would have continued it the GTX280 was £350 and the 260 £230!!

Most people I think are just slighty upset that they cannot afford it, at the end of the day its a single GPU that blows anything out the water with 4XAA+ and 16XAF+ @ 1660x1050 or more, lets face it like the 8800GTX its again the fastest card on the market, your going to have to pay top coinage for that!

I'm enjoying playing slightly older games on my out of date card (as of next week)

Get a last-gen card and play last-gen games, it's much easier on the wallet. :p
