GTX 1060

Why would 3gb rule out the 1050? Just an opinion, but I'd have thought the intended use of the 1050 will result in it running out of ooompf before memory?
If you need more memory than the 3gb then you probably need more power too :).

The GTX960 4GB was faster in certain titles than a GTX960 2GB. I have a GTX960 4GB and would not buy a GTX1050 3GB if an RX470 4GB is available. GTX1060 6GB over an RX480 8GB I would consider though. I still remember the 8800GT 256MB which looked OK in benchmarks but quickly started to look a bit meh compared to the 512MB version,so I see the GTX1050 3GB being in a similar situation.

People see the Vulkan results for Doom and assume that somehow it'd be like that for any Vulkan game. But the big jump for AMD in Doom came from switching over from OpenGL. Going from DX11->Vulkan wouldn't see nearly as big an increase.

Big enough increase going from DX11 to DX12. So DX11 -> Vulkan will not be that different.

In my eyes, if can you get a lower tier card, with more memory and running on a newer architecture, if it's about the same performance with an older higher tier card then things can't be that bad.

In the 480 thread people complained a lot about AMD releasing a card no better than a previous gen card. So did you. When somebody stated the exact things about the 480 that you wrote above about the 1060, your reply to him was:-

feels strange to use this as an encouragement to buy a card which just about matches a card that's already been out for years.

AMD what on earth are you doing?

Shouldn't you now be asking, Nvidia, what on earth are you doing?

The whole point for the AMD line was that they get better in time with drivers as it's a newer tech. The same can be said about 1060 or suddenly the same reasoning does not work for this card?

Is it not exactly the same thing?

In another thread talking about how AMD cards get better with time due to driver improvements. Seanspeed and Gregster made the point that AMD's improvements over time were less to do with actual driver improvements and more to do with AMD releasing poor launch drivers and the improvements are just AMD finally getting proper performance out of their cards. Unlike Nvidia who get full performance out of their cards from launch. Most people in the thread seemed to agree with these statements.

If they are right, then the 1060 will be 100% performance from the start, there might be game specific improvements further down the line, but, launch day performance is as good as it gets for the 1060. Whereas AMD are slow coaches, so they will take longer to get to grips with their new architecture, so there should be performance improvements as time goes on.

Textures. You can enable larger textures on a card with more memory with little to no performance impact, even if everything else is equal between them.

First official review from Korean site 's up:
http://www.hkepc.com/14257/全新GP106繪圖核心_NVIDIA_GeForce_GTX_1060登場/page/7#view

On par with RX480 at higher 1440p/4k resolutions

Matching the firestrike scores to ones up 3Dmark site, the 1060 was running at around 1900mhz.

Meaning it is already running near its limit to keep up with the reference RX480 if it kept those clocks for all of the results and not just the firestrike run.

Their firestrike results are also a bit low for the RX480, seen people getting 12k on release drivers, they only have 10k there.

Its running at 1900Mhz? ah well..... thats not so good then.

yeah, i think most will run at around 1900mhz TBH. Most leaks and 3dmark scores you can find have it clocked at least 200mhz over the rated max boost.

Of course the power usage will then be higher than 120W which is for it at 1.5-1.7ghz. But i guess we have to wait till 2 to find out.
