Hard Drive Pricing going up at an alarming rate!!!!

Just wait and see how the big manufacturers use it as an excuse to up prices across the board and not just on hard drives , with a major recession and a huge increase in rare earths /minerals/metals in world markets they are all looking to up prices just to keep their margins even. It looks quite grim for techy buyers.

I'm glad I bought my NAS + 2 X 2TB drives a few weeks ago! Drives were £59.99 now £91.99. Crazy

I wonder if this is gonna make Diskless NAS prices fall? Because of the HDD prices less people are going to be buying diskless NASs... Supply & Demand and all that!

Have Laptops increased in price

Nope. Infact on Monday Apple bumped up the specs of the MacBook Pro. Upgraded processor, graphics and/or storage options at the same price points as the previous models. http://www.macrumors.com/2011/10/24...pro-with-processor-graphics-storage-upgrades/

For example as of Monday the base model 13" MacBook Pro now comes with 500GB as standard instead of 320GB.

There is possibly one good thing to come from this situation. It might be good for the environment. Rising prices will slow the demand for "the latest kit". People, like myself, who were considering the purchase of a new hard drive (simply because they were relatively cheap) will now delay that purchase. What I`ve got will have to do for the time being. I suspect that the manufacture of tech kit consumes a fair amount of both raw materials and energy, not to mention the carbon footprint of distribution and the issues raised by disposal of "old" products. I'm no tree hugger, but I`ve long thought that the continuous development in tech products, coupled with the almost guaranteed fall in prices, has not been the best thing for the environment.

It is going to hault this throw a way society, but only temporarily. Probably move on to buying car parts again, lol.

Apple have healthy margins so will be able to afford to swallow the price increase, on the other hand your £300-£400 notebooks will be effected but it may not be noticed for a month or so until new stock hits the channel.

Gutting....my server seems to be running out of space rapidly only 300GB left :( was only thinking of adding another 2TB to the 6TB pool last month too

I'm in the same situation yet I managed to grab 2x 1TB Samsung 7200rpm drives for £80ish :D Just in time!

So, do you think prices will continue to increase much? I can get a 2tb samsung eco for about £71. Worth it?

The question can be answered by simply considering how long it takes or took you to earn £71 and with that in mind, consider the benefits you will get from that drive. If you feel that the benefits are worth it, it's worth it.

Hi there

OK another warning as of next week you can expect the following prices:-

500GB - £70-£90
1TB - £90-£130
2TB - £120-£200

Pricing is going crazy, if anyone is still obviously cheap buy it, because the pricing is going bonkers. :(

2 tb Samsung now £130 and rising , Caviar Black £210 and rising on a competitors site.
I'm feeling quite smug that I splashed for 6tb of spare storage just 3weeks ago.
Sitting on the shelf awaiting. Ive learned the hard way in the past that you need to be prepared if u dont want to lose data.

Just wondering what does OC and forum members think you should stock up on
as spares ??

Do you think this is partly due to panic buying, or is this the genuine level of supply shortage?
