Have you ever pirated anything?

Doesn't really matter and it's a pointless question. You could just say you gave the DVD to your mate while you were around his house so it was in his possession.

wouldn't that be against the part where it says no unauthorised lending or renting?

what do you mean by 'you'll probably get a holiday'???

Hello QlimaxUK, that link is inappropriate. Please read the FAQ, thank you. :)

No swearing, posting of "adult" material, personal attacks or "trolling"

OcUK would like you and your whole family to learn and share via our forums. For this reason swearing and the posting of "adult" or offensive material is forbidden. Simply replacing some of the letters in a swearword with a * or any other character is not acceptable. If you must then please replace the whole word with ***** or other repeated character. We also expect members to behave respectfully and not launch personal or abusive attacks on other members. Those who post for the sole purpose of causing trouble are not welcome here and will be dealt with accordingly.

Bare in mind that US cases don't automatically translate to EU or British law, so that stroy is of limited use :)

Burnsy

indeed but it doesn't stop them trying.

they frequently tray and sue such places as the pirate bay even though they are operating legally.

many of the letters that the pirate bay receives claim things which are very much scare tactics and really should be illegal for lawyers to send to people such as claiming they hold the copy right to the hash files etc.

Somebody in this thread mentioned "Pirates do it to look cool".
Someone else then posted that isn't the case.

I think maybe that second poster should read this whole thread.
There are quite a few people posting their "Look at me, not only do I pirate/thieve I admit it on a public forum" posts.
And they aren't doing it to look cool?

Pirates are no different from any other member of the thieving fraternity with the exception that they are less likely to be caught.

try chatting up a girl by telling her you can use your high sped internet connection and a news group to get a copy of the latest vista and then modify your bios to get it to run for free.

Then come back and tell us it's cool ;)

I think it is getting ridiculously out of hand at the minute, all the RIAA stuff and court cases are getting more and more frequent and its time something new needs to be done.

Radioheads new album is a great example. They allowed users to choose how much they paid for it and as a result, made more money on it than they did on their last album before it.

I don't like paying the same price for all films and things. Say a load of films have just come out on dvd, you've got things like transformers, fight club and Eternal Dragon (low budget chinese movie i made up in my head). They don't all cost the same to produce, they don't all see the same amount going to the original creators, so howcome they can all charge the same price?

I think its about time someone tried sueing a film company on the basis that the film they bought was crap and that it wasn't fit for its intended purpose, namely entertainment. And that they are suing the company for loss of their earnings.

i hate it how the film companys try and compare downloading films to stealing a car, or mugging someone, or breaking into homes... stuff like that its stupid

Bringing the subject over to video game piracy, in many cases the publishers are bringing it on themselves. They are bringing into force increasingly intrusive anti-piracy methods to stop their stuff being pirated. Recent examples include Bioshock, where originally you could only install it on 3 PCs. Not uninstalling it properly, or uninstalling it while offline used up one of these installs. There was such an outcry they changed it (to 5, I believe?). SecuROM is another example.
In 95% of cases, these will delay the pirating of a game by what, a week? Then it'll be out on the newsgroups.
After that week, the only people who will be hurt are the people who go and legally buy it. They have to put up with a program that may break their DVD drive, or that a hard drive failure could prevent them reinstalling a game. The pirates don't have to worry about this, since the security has been removed for them.

Same with DVDs. The 'piracy is stealing' message at the beginning of DVDs is pointless. As soon as the DVD is released (If not before) it'll have been posted somewhere, with all that junk removed. Only people who have no plans to pirate it will see the ads, and they have to sit through them. I'd much rather download a movie and not have to watch them. Sure, its only around 30 seconds, but its still pointless.

A blog from Introversion software. An indy team who made Uplink, Darwinia and Defcon. Uplink had a weird paper based anti-piracy method that meant digging it out each time you installed. Darwinia had none, Defcon is online, so needs a CD-key to connect to the server. No anti-piracy for single player, and a legit key needed for online.

Of course it's not cool except in the heads of the saddos who think it makes them all "Gangsta", "sticking it to the man", "I ain't paying no rip off corporations", /shrug

Sadly these will be the same people who are either not sure what a girl is or tend to post elsewhere on GD saying "My girlfriend has left me because I'm a dishonest loser, what should I do" Cool they most certainly ain't :D

So rather than watch a 30 second ad you'd rather rip off a movie? My you put a high price on being honest don't you, let's hope no one ever trusts you with their money if it causes you 30 seconds of inconvenience.
