Hazro - Any Update?

The backlight dimming sounds like a complete must-have.
This is my first experience of product revisions - how does it work?
Is the upgrade available to existing owners?
Is it free, or is there a cost?
Or do I have to sell mine and get a new version?

Cheers

The question is, are we going to have screens back by Wednesday, when Heroes starts on BBC HD :)

My monitor is my only HD device and I want to watch Heroes in all its glory!

So any news anyone?

My order has been printed in the warehouse and OCUK say it will ship today, so it seems they've received their repaired stock back from Hazro. Bodes well for Hazro shipping out individual customers repaired units soon.

i just phoned them and they told me that they haven't recieved the Hazro's back yet it might be today or tomorrow but I should receive it by wednesday. They gave me free shipping to make up.....

Had a very informative call from Jez late on Friday, guess I should have posted earlier but I was away! Ok a few points (let's see if I can remember...):

Banding: Totally fixed with new firwmare

Green snow: In his own words they have no idea what the cause is, they tried 3 things (firmware, shielding and changing cables) and neither worked. They said that they were working over the whole weekend and hope to have some good news. They said for people who are temporarily solving the issue with different cables e.t.c, once they know the exact cause they would rather fix the problem than have customers put up with a fix. Remember, this was on Friday, so since then they could have found the fix.

Backlight luminance: The new firmware reduces the backlight luminance so we should be able to hit from ~180cd/m² to ~125cd/m² by default (trying to hit the target of 120 but obv screen dependent). This is done by reducing the amount of power the backlight uses, hence reducing it's luminance and allowing us to hit darker blacks.

Firmware: The RGB sliders problem is a bug which was an anomaly. He said this was totally unacceptable and will be fixed with others.

Future revisions: There will be a revision of the 24" and 26" monitors in around Feb, which will allow us to modify backlight luminance ourselves (amongst other fixes which I've forgotten).

Uneven colours (problem that I'm having where to get a neutral colour I have to set reds around 10 less than greens and blues using the OSD sliders): It's a common misconception that having all values at the same setting will result in a neutral picture, instead all values are independent of each other. Having said that, going to an extreme like I'm doing may imply a problem which they'll look into.

Overall Jez was very friendly and helpful, talking to him made me feel that they really know what they're talking about and want the customer to have the best screen possible. He even said on their new website they'll be talking about the drawbacks of S-IPS panels so that customers know what to expect, so they seem like a really honest company. Now the only problem I'm having is wondering whether to wait for the revised model, so I'll see what the firmware update can do!

Awesome post....very helpful information.

After reading the review of the HZ26Wi at tftcentral, I had my heart set on it as it was everything I wanted (I was especially looking for an ultra-low input lag which this monitor seems to have) but some of these issues (banding and green snow) seem to be real issues.

I've obviously joined this scene at a later stage but the issues you state are fixed above, Rajveer, are these fixes included in the 'Wi' version (as opposed to the 'W' version) or another revision beyond this?

I'm looking to replace my existing Dell 2001FP 20.1" (which is starting to show it's age and the backlight is beginning to fail in places I think) in January with some xmas money....looks like it might be a good time to "wait and see what happens" at the moment.

On another note, dis-regarding the banding and green snow for a moment, does anyone have any feedback regarding the input lag in games...is it nearly as responsive as a CRT in that respect.

Any comments on ghosting...any noticable effect in games?

I'm assuming for these later two points, no news is good news.

I really like smaller companies that strive to give their customers "the best" and do actually work with them to address issues....that point alone would want me to buy a screen from them!!

Cheers for any feedback! :)

I've got the 24 inch and have no problems with ghosting or lag in game. I play a lot of COD4. My previous monitor, an old Acer suffered badly from both, so I know what to look for. Afaik, no one has had any problems of this sort.

The sharpness and size of the Hazro is a real benefit to gaming - heads are just that much bigger to aim/snipe at :)

Awesome, thanks for the flurry of replies guys :)

@Cooper....being an owner of a higher input lag/ghosting screen before, would you say that the new monitor has improved your game/made it earier/more enjoyable?

Oh...one last question, I'm pretty paranoid about deal/stuck pixels....in 2004 I went through 3 Dell 2001FP's before I actually got one I was satisfied with....has anyone had any problems with dead/stuck pixels with Hazro displays?

I had some terrible issues with those screens with about 3 green 'always' on pixels towards the middle of the screen on the first two and couldn't get them replaced as this apparently was "tollerable" (which I think is discusting). I know that 99% of consumer displays are dubbed as "Class II" and have upto 5 'always on' pixels, 5 'dead' pixels and 9 sub-pixels (which is the only way to sell them at an economic price as there would be a massive 'failure rate' otherwise) but I just feel when you're paying all this money, you should get a perfect screen; why is it fair that one customer gets a perfect screen and the next one doesn't when they are paying the same price?

Anyway, rant over, these days I've thankfully seen that most people don't get any faults at all so manfacturing methods must have improved some-what.

Cheers again!

Oh yes. Previous screen was a 19 inch Acer. Ghosting was awful due to a 25ms refresh, so a lot worse than most. Input lag was noticeable as I frequently kept getting owned before even seeing people shoot.

Although I game just for enjoyment, I've got a Logitech G15(rev2) Keyboard and a G5 corded Laser mouse, which both make a real difference to speed and accuracy. The new Hazro took it to another level. The size of the screen gives you a much more realistic viewpoint, filling your field of vision. Enemies at a distance appear larger. I can see them clearly and sniping was vastly improved (although I'm much more of a charge in blasting style). Watching an area for movement is easier as everything is at greater detail.

My rig struggles on some maps at 1900x1200 (running a 2.8ghz Core2Duo, 8800gts with 3.5mb ram), so I've scaled down a bit to 1680x1050, with only a small loss of detail.

Kill rate has gone up, death rate has gone down. Without blowing my own trumpet, I frequently finish top in games with 32 players and my kit is part of the reason for that. The Hazro really is a beautiful monitor. Can't wait to get it back :)

Awesome...just what I wanted to hear ;)

My Dell 2001FP had a 16ms refresh but no idea how much input lag although I remember when I changed from a CRT to this LCD it felt like playing on 'ice' and not very natural at all.

I've got a core2duo 'wolfdale' oc'ed to 4ghz with 2gb of ddr3 ram and x2 8800 GTX's in SLI (oc'ed of course :D) so I should be able to deal with the 1920x1200 native res nicely.

Thanks again for your comments! :)

My order has gone back into the warehouse queue now, so it looks like they won't be shipping until tomorrow at the earliest.
