Homeworld & Homeworld 2 HD remakes in the works

Have mine plonked on my desk at work now.....my space was looking a little bare!

Lovely packaging though. I miss having manuals to read :)

I still haven't started playing this properly yet, but after playing the HW1 tutorial and reading comments on forums, I think I'll give it a while for them to patch some of the issues first. Maybe it's not as bad as some are making out, but it does sound like some relatively annoying bugs and design decisions have been made so hopefully they're listening to feedback.

So, how many people here have completed the game, HW1, and what did they think of the remastered versh?
Personally its reckon its the same game but has be played differently due to the differences in each level which are the results of Gearbox's remastering process (they used the HW2 engine I think I read somewhere). My main gripes are, like most people, are formations are broken, they don't work, end of and deffo needs sorting with a patch or other method. Also, evasive/passive/aggresive tactics don't work either as far as I can see which means you lose control over what your fleet does, it'll attack whatever is in range regardless of what setting you use. This is a pain in the neck when trying to target stuff for capture by salvage vettes and limits the number of enemy craft you end up with.
I like full control over what I'm doing and I hate having my selected craft doing the opposite. The other bugs, if you will, I can live with, as I haven't come across many and those that I have aren't really a problem to me.
Opinions?

But above all, it does look nice!

Completed homeworld one and yeh the game has to be played slightly differently to before , as it is essentially HW1 levels on HW2 engine. Its pretty good so far, just starting HW2.

The tactics do work correctly for me, I just had to use the halt command after switching to stop their attack but the formations are broken in HW1.

Ooooo..forgot about the halt command, I'll give a go:)

Playing through the HW1 campaign. I'm loving salvage corvettes. One mission, the biggest thing I could build was frigates, and the enemy threw 4 destroyers at me. No problem, I sent out some salvage corvettes and stole one of the destroyers. Was pretty nice owning a ship much more powerful than what I could produce myself.

One thing I've noticed from repeating a few of the missions, is that the size of the enemy fleet seems to depend on the size of your own fleet at the start. The bigger your own fleet, the bigger the enemy fleet. I wonder if this can be exploited? Recycle every ship before hyperspacing, start the next mission against a weak enemy, spend all your resources on rush-building a new fleet?

Well loosing the Destroyers you have hijacked before the next mission might suck if you cant make new ones when you access the next mission.

What do you base this on? I had to replay that mission with the destroyers and carrier in that asteroid field a few times before I got it right, I did it with a range of fleet sizes and didn't notice any changes in theirs.

The difficulty definitely scales a little, I remember an interview with a designer mentioning it. Kinda have to do that if you carry your fleet over through the whole campaign.

Its supposed to scale. In the original HW1 it didn't, but it did in the original HW2. Since HW1 has been moved into the HW2 engine for Remastered, it scales. Perhaps not in every mission though, I'm not sure.

A trick that some people used in the original HW2 was to retire a load of ships just before the start of a new level. That way you'd go in with a small fleet, but loads of resources. The game would balance only for the size of fleet that you had, making it easier to complete. Personally I prefer my games to be challenging, a hard fight with a narrow victory is more rewarding to me than a roflstomp.

The campaign isn't exactly the same as it was, but its still allot of fun, very enjoyable. The thing that's annoying me at the moment is how broken multiplayer is. You're fortunate if you can even get one running without half the players crashing, or getting stuck on 'downloading content...'. What fkin content? I hope they release a patch for it soon.

I'm on the last two levels, the one with the big asteroid (thats defended by an enemy fleet btw) that you've got to destroy and the Hyperspace out. Well, the sheer size of the defending fleet is ridiculous to be frank, its absolutely mahoosive and I've tried witha large and reduced fleet to see if it balances and no way is that balanced. I had everything maxed out fleetwise and captured the entire enemy frigates from the bridge of sighs, and I ended up in the last level with, wait for it, two missile destroyer, 2 cruisers, a bucket load of strike craft and vettes and that was it! I had my butt handed to me on the previous level. I've tried reducing the fleet size, scuttling, trying out different groups/mixes of capital ships and still no go, ludicrous number of enemies in the second from last level.
I've played the original Homeworld many, many times in the past and the size of the enemy fleet in that level was a fraction of what I'm looking at on me monitor, which incidentally, the fps went into the red when running fraps, thats single figures, maybe 5-6 frames a second (pc in me sig below for reference), that might give an idea as to the size of fleet I was up against. Really don't know what top do now except experiment and find a happy medium that works

I've just completed HW1:R - the last mission was pretty tough, I had a strong fleet going in but the first couple of times I lost my mothership within about 10 mins. After the initial rush they jump in a couple of enemy fleets behind you, so you need to watch out for that. I really enjoyed playing the campaign again, its not quite the same as it was, but still very satisfying. On to HW2 next :)

Nice :) Fingers crossed I can actually get into some multiplayer games without getting stuck on "Downloading content...". Although I don't see it specifically mentioned in the patch notes.

After completing HW1 campaign I'm progressing nicely through HW2. HW2 definitely plays better in Remastered.

If you're going to do, or have done the HW2 level where you've got to dock the progenitor ship with the dockyard, "nabal" givvus a couple of hints would you mate, I just can't seem to get past this level. I destroy the hyperspace gates, and then start to have a go at the 3 carriers but I continually get swamped by the Vagyr, me resource collectors get obliterated so I run out of dosh, and in the end I finish watching the MS blow up. This level seems far more difficult to do than when I played HW2 a few years back (maybe I'm getting old?)
Any pointers?
