How many Focus ST owners on here

I was going to suggest maybe the front wishbone bushes but definitely sounds like driveshaft could be the cause if those are known symptoms. Least you can get reconditioned ones now, in the past the only option was a complete new driveshaft.

For your work having block mod done I'd recommend Collins Performance, their stage 1 remap gets you up to 260bhp. Next level is 280bhp though the price jumps as this includes intercooler and cat-back system.

Can I join the club?

This is arriving next week to accompany my FD2 Type R.

Looks very tidy (suppose it should be given the age), shame about the fuel it uses tho :p That bit fresher looking outside and in than the pre facelifts. I do wish there was a simple way to drop in the revised sync head unit to mine as it makes such a difference to the interior

Almost 2k miles done and reasonably happy.

Few questions for any Focus ST TDCi owners and formers owners.

1) I seem to be averaging around 46 mpg, that's doing 75 ish on the motorway. I would have expected more? I wasn't far off this figure in my F10 530d which weighs more, has more power and two more cylinders.
2) The aircon isn't great. If I put it on 20 it never seems to get low enough to make it nice and cool. I seem to have to toggle max aircon now and then to keep the temperature low.
3) How does hill start assist work? It's on, but doesn't do what I think it should.
4) There's a light position for traffic, choices being right and left, but what is it meant to be on?

Mine is petrol so can only help with a couple

2) Mine is set at 19 and regulates perfectly to that, seems stupid but just turn it down half a degree?

3) Hill start holds for maybe 2 seconds to allow you to get moving - it won't hold indefinitely and only works after (from memory) you have used the brakes and taken it in and out of neutral.

My parents have a Kuga with the 2.0l diesel engine, appreciate it being a heavier car but still has laughable MPG. If I remember correctly high 30's early 40's.

My Superb lifetime average is around 50mpg, think it may be fords diesel engines not being as efficient as they make out.

Decided to break my own rule of not buying the same car twice (too many nice cars around). And just purchased another Focus ST. Had thought about downsizing to the new Fiesta ST. But timing wrong, plus maybe best to give the car 12 months to see if there are any "issues" etc. with the new 3-cylinder engine. Toyed with moving on to another manufacturer etc. but there was a fair bit more equity left at the end of my current PCP to walk away from (what a dealer hopes I suppose). Tangerine Scream paint job this time round (though I'd call it dark yellow myself). ST3 with a few choice options. The previous red ST3 had been faultless over 2 years, so why not.

If I set mine to 19, if it's cold outside then I'll find it too cold. If it's warm outside, stop/start never works as it's trying too hard to cool the car down. In the BMW, I just set it to 20 or something and never had to touch it.

That's how I thought hill assist would work, but it's never appeared to work so far. I'm not fussed as I don't need it, just thought I'd try it out and then the car started rolling backwards. :p

I think you're right, VAG engines seem to have that extra few % in terms of economy.

4 - It'll adjust the beam if you're driving on the continent. Park up at night opposite a wall or similar and toggle the setting, you'll see the beam pattern change.
Okay I'll give it a go the next time I'm out in it when it's dark.

1st Gen ST2 is the only car I've ever had 2 of too.. when my also red one was near death I searched around and eventually realised what I wanted was an orange one :)

Pretty certain it's a menu setting - check it's not unticked in the assists / driving aids menu

Had my car over ea year now and tbh the only problem I've really had is with Ford rather than the car.

Went in for a service then some warranty work, they damaged the freshly painted bumper (now to be clear it's a tiny scratch, but through the paint all the same), the attitude coming back to me from their service manager was hugely disappointing - a lot of "couldn't have been us" and "that's tiny anyway" coming back at me. Unnaceptable tbh.

Then last week one of my headlight washer covers fell off. The bumper has to come off to change the radiator (the warranty work it was in for) and the tab holding on the cover was broken, meaning it went walkabout somewhere on the M8 near Glasgow. Spent £60 on getting a new tiny bit of plastic then getting it painted, checked the other side this evening and they've damaged it too. I have resecured the other side temporarily and will stick a bit more of a permanent fix on it this weekend but Ford's general lack of care and after service leaves a massive amount to be desired.

Have experienced it before with the Fiesta when getting work done by an Arnold Clark Ford. I put it down to the specific franchise but starting to think it's more of a manufacturer issue

Hello guys

How common is climate control on mk2 ST? There are barely find any with climate for sale, most have the manual blowers
I should be going to see this on saturday - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201806137468719?make=FORD&price-to=6000&model=FOCUS&radius=1500&onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly New&onesearchad=New&postcode=le33lu&sort=price-desc&advertising-location=at_cars&aggregatedTrim=ST-3&page=1 . I realise this is probably playing over the odds but it has been for sale for a while so if I like it I should be able to get a decent whack off

Climate and auto lights are somewhat rare spec. Not common but the Manual blowers ain’t all bad.

Are you comfortable with what you need to check for?

Yep you outlined it nicely here for me last time :D

You're probably going to look at anything between 25-30mpg on a long commute depending entirely on the engine/how you drive. Mine was awful on fuel until I got it mapped. It has made a hell of a difference. I feel the car in standard form felt very flat.

So when it comes to purchasing it is pretty much a mine field. Expect to spend £7k or more for a decent FL. Pfl I'd say £5-6k should bag you a decent low mileage st3.

People say to avoid the '07 ones as they have weaker clutches. Mine so far is ok but if you're looking to modify later on then budget £800ish for an rs clutch and flywheel.

Cracked liners are a common cause for worry they can happen to standard car or modified cars. Just a lottery. You can do a block mod to sort of help prevent the issue. Budget £500-700 for this. Good to do of the car needs a cambelt change (100k miles or 10 years whatever comes first) although if the car has been looked after and is standard I wouldn't worry to much. Mayo under oil cap, lots of smoke from exhaust, low coolant is a tell tale sign. Sometimes mayo can be due to short journeys but a lot of it - walk away. Even smell the exhaust for coolant smell. If the heaters don't blow air or any hot air when cars warm - walk away.

Oil filter diagphram can go. It's apparent when the car is idling as a very high pitched whistle. Once you remove the oil cap or dipstick it stops. Sometimes it it hasn't been sorted quickly it can cause the cam seals to go which isn't good.

Make sure the car boosts right. If standard it should boost to quarter in first 4 gears until 4k revs then it should go to half and hold. 5th and 6th full foot down it should boost to 3/4 for a very short time then hold at half.
Anything which goes into red is mapped.
If for whatever reason it seems off then it can be the boost solenoid as a first port of call, budget £50ish for this. Easy to fit.

Turbo oil temp should be between 50 and middle line. Pressure of oil should be at 5 bar when cold then lessen though it should rise as the revs rise.

Driveshafts clicking - walk away as very expensive to fix unless seller is willing to knock a couple of 100 off the price.

Steering rack can also have issues where when turning it's tight at the start then frees up. I had this with mine in the colder weather. I got lucky and a steering fluid changed fixed it. If the steering fluid is black this can be a tell tale sign. However, loose alloy wheel nuts can also cause this.

Gearbox notchy in cold weather is some what a common problem. A fluid change can help but make sure all gears go in fine when warm.

Make sure all electrics work such as heated windscreen, heated seats, traction control etc. Windscreen should be ford oem, if it's anything other then ford written then it's been replaced. Make sure the scuttle panel is flush against it.

Rust can appear where rear bumper meets rear quarter on the corners. Opening the boot the middle at the top can rust due to friction when shutting. Make sure rear parking sensors work which should beep. A continuous beep or interval beeps when nothing behind, its possible module is at fault.

Then do all the usual checks you would do.

Purchased mine for £4.1k ,07 with 79k. Very decent condition for age. Spent a bit on it but not because I had to.

Brilliant cars. Very family friendly and they bloody sound good.

Did they ever come with auto wipers?
