In usbshare#-2 you should see the infamous vender file :D along with a few others.

So transfer it to your desktop or whatever, do the edit and then transfer it back and HOPEFULLY you should be good to go.

You are 100% correct - However...I cannot browse to the USB via WSCP...it just isn't there, which is really odd. Why would that be the case, as the Synology software knows it is plugged in! Very odd indeed.

I can browse to anything else on the box, just not the usb. Is there a setting i have to check in the synology software so i can browse the sub via SCP?

I downloaded Partition wizard and checked the usb boot drive. As mentioned above, it shows a 'hidden' partition which no doubt has the vender file on it, but I cannot seem to browse to it through partition wizard. Obviously windows cannot see the hidden partition.

I do not want to lose the volume. It is also now simply too large to backup anywhere. I would prefer not to lose all my settings etc, but to be honest, I don not want the box being insecure, so although it might take a day to get it all working how I need etc, it's not the end of the world assuming I can upgrade and the volume, and all data on it, remain intact.
 
Just thought worth mentioning that you can save your settings using >backup and restore > configuration backup.

If you save your settings, it should not too much trouble to re-import them after the update.

Apologies if that is obvious or not really the issue. Might help someone though.
 
I have XPEnology 4.3 installed and running.

I am having an issue with file transfers though. I have a USB HDD plugged into the Microserver. It has about 2.5TB of data on it. I am trying to copy that onto the NAS but it keeps falling over.

What will happen is it will start moving the data across and then at some apparently random point it will stop the operation. I have managed to get about 500GB across so far but it is in dribs and drabs and is proving very infuriating.

Sometimes I get an error message saying the operation has failed but most of the time nothing. At other times the transfer won't even start.

I have posted this on the XPEenology forums as well.

EDIT : Found out what was causing some transfers not to start. I had ended up with some duplicate files during the data move and it was skipping those when I was trying to move these into folders with dupes present. Still unsure what is causing other transfers to stop midway through though.

Do you have a network cable - perhaps you can hook it up to your pc and mount the shared folder on the desktop and transfer files that way.
No experience, but might be worth a try.
 
Have you tried copying the data across via SSH (use the standard cp command)?

I had a few issues copying data off of a USB drive (wouldn't copy a few directories for some bizarre reason) using DSM and had to use SSH in the end.
 
To edit the mac address.

In the Synology software make sure you enable control panel > FTP > General > tick all three check boxes.
And control panel > Terminal > enable SSH Service.

Then you should be able to see the file you need. You may need to look around a little.

Use this excellent programme to edit:

I know nothing about pc's, but was able to do my own using this and it worked perfectly. The information is so scattered about, but hope this helps someone.

That info was already posted a page back. Also you can see the usb stick in windows and you can mount it.
I suggest that if anyone doesn't know about terminal\root rights etc. should stay away from synology altogether.

And don't forget to turn off terminal after. And synology have emailed people to inform them to update as 4.2\4.3 was hacked.

Apologies. You have indeed posted it before. My bad.

I tried to run the update on your post 173, but just get a blank dialog box and an ok button. But it doesn't update. Any ideas please? It is by far the easiest method I have come across and would be great if I could get it to work. Simple is good!

I'm only updating because of the security issues. It's not by choice really.

Not easily. My network cables are trunked and I don't have a spare cable available.

Thanks for that. I had a problem when trying to update and one of my two servers could no longer download the update. Saying check your ethernet cables, so guess I must have done something to cause that. Maybe deleted files perhaps. So I decided to reinstall by formatting the usb drive and putting a fresh install on. But it seems to have remembered all my settings, so I'm thinking the format left the file on perhaps? Strange it can survive a format, but no matter.
I'd be grateful for the V5 link that you actually used if you have it to hand please. Just to be sure.

You may have clicked upgrade before setting the task. V5 and have a good read as it's only a few pages.

I always use a spare HD then I can play with out hurting my files. Post back how you get on.
 
It's purely a backup, so no big deal. I have two, so can experiment!

Your USB drive is only used to boot up the OS.

The OS itself and all the appdata and config files are stored on a small partition on your HDDs so if you just wiped the USB drive then it won't have affected the OS at all which is why it would remember all your settings.
 
Anyone have any issues getting XBMC to connect to shares?

I have set things up and I am unable to get XBMC to connect to it via SMB or NFS. I have followed the guides on the wiki without any success.

If I try and connect over SMB I see the "Diskserver" under the workgroup. When I try to select it to browse for the relevant share I get an error saying "connection timed out"

When I try and connect via NFS it times out if I try and browse to the share. (I have followed the guide on the wiki and have enabled the NFS settings correctly.) If I try and manually enter the address (in this case nfs://192.168.0.2/volume1/TV Shows/) when I hit the OK button I get the sound to signify a menu click and then XBMC becomes unresponsive. After a few minutes it returns and says it can't connect and do I want to add the address anyway.

I don't know if this is related but when I first setup the "Diskstation" showed up in Windows on my main computer. It doesn't show anymore but I can access mapped drives.

Ah, thanks. That explains that then!

Hopefully the full upgrade will wipe the slate clean from that point of view.
 
Have managed to resolve the issue. I use home plugs on the network and the living room one plugged into a switch. I have removed the switch and am connecting directly.

Share now show up. Don't know why it wasn't working beforehand. I could still connect to the XBMC machine over the network without issues.
