HUNGARORING - BUDAPEST - HUNGARY Grand Prix 2009 - Race 10/17

You have to wonder... Bernie said that it was always BMW's plan to win the title after 3 years. WTF? Who planted that seed into BMW's mind? Why did Bernie "go along" with it when he knew it would require a small miracle for BMW to achieve that target?

Signing business contracts when at least one party knows the target goal is unachievable is deplorable IMO.

I'm not sure why he came out with that random spiel.

What if teams ran 3 cars but only the top 2 could be awarded points?

maybe Im being stupid - but surely that just gives a team a "free" chance for a failure, with no "real" cost of loss of points , still blatantly unfair imo ;)

(not surprising that you would suggest it though - j/k)

It would have to be one specific car chosen at the beginning of the season not to score any points regardless of where it came, otherwise it would be unfair. If you have 3 cars running and just pick the best 2 places you would statistically be much more likely to score points than if you were running 2 cars. Even without that you would still get the team tactics from the third car interfering

could be workable but I would still feel uncomfortable with it - it would still allow full live testing in race circumstances (on the car which cant score) with no drawback to the team with more money

My thinking exactly. Effectively run the 3rd car as a test car with new parts that need testing or give young drivers a chance to race in F1 without actually racing, giving them vital experience? :)
.

Exactly why its a bad idea and heavily biased towards teams with bigger capabilities

(mind you ....if they have the same budget running a 3rd car even without driver salary would surely slash during season dev funds....so maybe its a little fairer than I first considered)

It would only be fair-ish from a constructors championship point of view if the two cars contributing points were set at the start of the season. Cars 1, 2 and 3. Only cars 1 and 2's points contribute to the constructor's total, car 3's points only go to the driver. The team still ends up with more data, more testing though so it's not really fair.

Good to see that Massa appears to be recovering at a decent rate and the doctors seem to think that there will be no long term brain injury or damage to his sight. Good to see :)

Why would we need a team to field 3 cars. we have 13 teams for next year. So even if 2 of the new teams and bmw drop out we still have a 20 car grid. As well as some of ther other teams that were rejected might step in.

and if 10 teams were allowed to run 3 cars, would they allow 30 cars in the race? if not how would they decide which 3 teams would have 3

Way too late for the rejected teams to come into F1 now unless they were allowed to buy or somehow acquire BMW's cars or designs.

Random lottery. :p

Honda were taken over by an employee. If a rejected F1 team were to come in now they'd not be taking over BMW in the same way as they weren't working for BMW.

It would be very similar. I imagine it would be cheaper for BMW to sale than just to pack up.

But anyway, there's more than enough cars for a 20+ grid without running 3 cars.
