I think i just lost my licence

I've in theory lost a police car,
did a 3 across overtaking manouvre with one of the cars bieng a cop car in the opposite direction,
After seeing him pull over and turn around, I just redlined it all the way to my destination and he went the wrong way at a roundabout. (Dont see anything wrong with this as I just drove away fast and he was a good few hundered metres behind me at the time.)

I didnt break any speed limits, just merely drove towards my destination ignoring whats going on behind me which imo is totally reasonable.

If he was the car behind and a few meters behind that will be totally different.

I do worry about the driving skills of some of the members on this forum. I don't know if I'm more concerned that you think "redlining it away" (but not speeding *cough*) from a police officer is okay? Or the fact you think driving along totally ignoring whats behind is also okay

At the end of the day it all comes down to how you're going to deal with the guilt of when you do actually hurt someone - be that the person behind you were totally ignoring, or the passenger you've just killed as you redlined it (but didnt speed *cough*) then lost control and ditched into the nearest oak tree.

edit: speeding = THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!!! :p

I got caught for racing on the public highway which also meant that my insurace had been void too.

I got a years ban and £300 fine. It was probably the best thing to happen to calm my driving down and to realise what idiots these boy racers are. It has made me into a more sensible driver......sort of :)

Likewise, please clarify.
I assume it's overtaking across three lanes - on a motorway of course. So you overtake two or more cars (in both outside and middle lane) by diving across three lanes and overtaking in the inside lane.

That's what the name suggests, anyway?

Could someone explain what a "3 across overtaking manouvre" is exactly? I’m not sure myself but it sounds very dangerous if it’s what I think it is.

My guess is where it is a single lane each way on the road but each lane is fairly wide. Which just allows 3 cars wide on the road even though there isnt lanes for it.

Ah, that makes sense, thanks for the explanation; I can't believe anyone would admit to doing that on a public forum though, it's pretty much the definition of ill mannered and ill thought out driving.

Been there for a while now.....

Sorry the mistake is a painful one. Mistakes can be painful to the pocketbook, the license, or from a solid right hook!! I'm not sure which is worse......

There is a bypass near here that is only 1 lane each way - but you could fit two lanes each way in the space, it's common for people to overtake with an oncoming car approaching (you don't have to leave your side of the road) - heck i've even seen the police doing it....

I was going to say "bad luck" & all that, on reflection though, I'd say you've been damn lucky mate.

Why?

You very nearly had an accident with a highly trained driver, driving a vehicle that was more likely than not to be 100% ok mechanically.

The (Police) drivers training would have no doubt helped him avoid getting killed by you & vice versa.

Think what could have happened had you done that overtake into the path of some much less experienced driver, with crappy brakes on his chavved up Corsa / whatever?

heaven above! - What if it had been a 44 tonner?

Not only could he (the copper) have been killed, you could have too!

Points / ban / whatever is nothing to what could have been, and, thank God, was'nt the outcome.

lesson learned mate, go outside & kiss the ground. ;)

Your both ok, thats the main thing, you have learned a valuable lesson - hey mate, I've done similar things in the past (and, sometimes the present! :o ) were all human, don't start beating yourself up too much mate.

I reckon points & a fine, if your luck holds out.

In 12 days, I will once again have a clean license....I was convicted on the offence on the 24/01/2007, and received 6 points and a 240 quid fine.

I decided to bump this old thread nearly 4 years down the line and remind people that sometimes you have to make silly errors, and it is not the end of the world, and you do learn from them :)

I changed my attitude to driving massively after this event. I have decided that ultimately i am glad this happened, and a better driver/person for it!

I got banned for reckless driving when I was a kid, woke me up quickly.
