***Intel i7 4790K Owners thread***

It'll hardly make it obsolete, the performance improvements from Haswell > Skylake are not that exceptional.

Skylake isn't released yet, we have no official performance numbers, only questionable leaks.

What we do know is that it's going to have at least 10% more IPC than Haswell. We know this since Broadwell is a 5.5% IPC increase over Haswell, and Skylake is bound to be at least 5% more than Broadwell.

We also know that the PCH, Z170, is greatly improved over Z97, as it features a PCI-E v3 link from CPU to PCH (via DMI 3.0), which means we'll have much more speed/lanes available from the PCH for ultra fast PCI-E SSD's.

Also I meant 'obsolete' by being end of life, and having an outdated chipset. 4790K will of course be a very good CPU for many years to come, though like I said, paying £460 for a 4790k, 3 months away from Skylake is not a wise decision imo.

Yeah i would rather put the extra 200 quid into GPU power but theres guys out there throwing 1000 pounds at a graphics card, they probably wont mind thowing an extra 200 quid at their CPU for a binned one.

Oh, i thought you were referring to him buying a 4790k in general. I agree that spending £460 on one isn't the best move though.

If you want the premium you need to pay extra. Thats how it is, everyday, with everything in this world.;)

The best move would be to get 4790k during some promo. Period.
However I am not talking about "the best move" but the "golden chip move". Speaks for itself ;)

Ha I'm part of that mailing list and picked up on that same listing the other day. Was close to hitting the buy button but decided with shipping/customs tax it would take the price to something crazy.

Some of these posts are interesting, nice low vcores with some awesome clocks.

I'm currently sat at stock.

Can anyone recommend a good baseline as to an ideal voltage for a 4.5ghz OC? I'm set of hitting 10k (would love to hit 10.5k) on firestrike (free one via steam) with my current setup.

Hitting 9.9k atm, everything stock.

Just upgraded from an AMD FX-8350 & Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5 to the i7 4790k & Asus Maximus VII Hero and seriously, wow!!

Finally I can make use of my second GTX 970. The 8350 was bottlenecking something chronic in SLI and even using one card I'm seeing a huge performance increase and gaming in general just seems so much smoother.

Best decision I've made in a long time I think. The 8350 served me well but it just can't power 2 970's.

What's considered ok voltage under decent watercooling? 1.4v - 1.45v probably be fine as long as temps are good?

I read these figures somewhere i dunno if they were just pulled out of a hat or came from testing 1.35V @85C° 1.4V @65C° and 1.5V at @40C° i assume through testing people have worked out a balance between heat and voltage which if exceeded is likely to start degrading the chip much faster.

I read the haswell spec sheet in the past but i couldnt make heads or tails of it. :)

Golden chip here ;)

Just for now...

1.35v in bios
~55C average temp under load(58C max)

This processor has made the world of difference to GTAV over my FX. Which is great, as it was GTAV that made me think it was probably about time to retire the FX8320.

GTA5 was what swayed me too! Noticed that my FX-8320 was starting to struggle quite a bit.

i have AMD FX-8350 & Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5, also wanting to upgrade, but thinking i just hold out for skylake not long left , but really want better performance then fx which i know i will get with the 4790k
