***Intel i7 4790K Owners thread***

so mine is L406......
Havent seen anyone else with 40X just 41X ...
Ppl say L3 << L4 but ...I cant say its any good. What do u think ?

1.35 for 4.7ghz
1.41 for 4.8ghz...

Temps are still okay, aroud 70-80C using noctua's D-15 in OCCT test...

I left mine on 4.6ghz at 1.26v, not worth the extra volts for a 100mhz climb

It's set to adaptive voltage with a offset of -0.02, so never goes above 1.26 even in prime etc

Expected slightly better but its still a beast of a cpu

That's a lot volts what mother board are you using fat4l

Guys can every offer some advice?

I recently installed my 4970 running under an h100i...

Temps idle around 25 and under load in gaming max temp I have seen is 40 ish... Problem is i cant seem to overclock this cpu..

I am using an MSI gaming board with the latest bios and if I try and set the multiplier to 4.6 to boost me up to 4600 i get a random kernal crash after an hour or so or if I exit from a game and open chrome or something that should no really stress the CPU..

I downloaded CPU ID and it shows the CPU voltage when running at 4400 @ 1.155V which does not seem a lot... Board is set to auto adjust my voltage i think...

could there be a setting in the bios i need to turn off / on.. changing the multiplier seems too simple...

Well. There are many, many settings you can play around with but generally I find all that needs doing for a mild overclock is setting the multiplier and the CPU core voltage. So go into your BIOS and find CPU core voltage setting - change it from auto to 1.200v which in my case is ok for 4.6GHz. If you still get the crash then set it to 1.225 or even 1.250 might be necessary. Also settings for Load Line Calibration (LLC) and Phase Control I set these to the maximum settings (Extreme Performance in my case). These settings stabilise the voltages under load but will generate more heat across your motherboard VRM's. You have a decent board so shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Thanks mate.. will give that a go

Been having issues with my chip running too hot at stock under load (90+). Just had a moment of rage today and ended up de-lidding it. :P I only had some arctic 5 to hand so put that on the die and fired her up. Temps are just the same as before which was a bit of a let down. Can I expect drops if I use liquid metal on it and if so what brands should I go for?

I also heard that I should have nail polish/varnish on the left capacitors if going with metal? Can I have some info on that process and what I need. Cheers.

that's the one to use mate, the temps will drop significantly maybe 15c or more.

Re the caps, just use a non capacitive paste like this.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=TH-004-AR

put it all over the caps.

When using the liquid metal you must use the smallest amount possible or it will run off and cause real problems.

Does anyone tried the coollaboratory metalpad?
is it good as liquid?
can i use the pad right on the chip (after delidding?)
is it safer the the liquid?

im talking about this:

For certain multi threaded games an i7 will be a better choice. Crysis 3, and bf3/4 are games I've found benefit from an i7 with sli.

guys, i need some advice and opinions.

i currently have a FX [email protected] with a crosshair v formula z mobo.
yesterday i took delivery of a gigabyte GTX 970 G1 gaming.

now im also eyeing up one of these 1440p 34" wide monitors.

so im going to be adding another 970 G1 to my system but im worried my FX chip wont have the power to not bottleneck them, would a switch to a i7 4790k and Z97 board be worth doing?
im using 2x4gb corsair xms3 1600mhz that i may replace as well

if you had £450 for a new CPU mobo and ram what would it be? its just a pure gaming rig as well btw :)

Question for 4790k owners, I noticed my system ram is 7.85% (I have 8gig installed) can I disable the onboard cpu GPU and will this free up the ram ?

Perhaps it may reduce volts/temps even I only ask since not sure its safe ?

So i sold mine (L406XXXX) as it was a real crap. Couldnt do 4.8 even with 1.425....

Now I have L425xxxx and its uber good. Doing 5Ghz with around 1.4(testing now).
I also just delided it today, put CL liquid ultra on die, then between IHS and cooler(NH-D15) I used gelid gc extreme(I believe it to be the best "normal" paste).
Temps went down by 10-15C depending on cores...

Guys, what do u believe is the maximum 24/7 OC voltage ? I see ppl benching with up to 1.45V no problem but is it save to run for 24/7 even with using EIST and adaptive voltage....?

Im trying to get 5ghz as i said, but it requires a bit more than 1.4V. I can do 1024M Wprime, 32M superPI...but cant pass Asus Real Bench nor CPU:OCCT test...
4.9Ghz is 1.36V....

The CPU is delided, In OCCT i'm getting ~75C at 5Ghz/1.41V before it crashes...
