Intel to launch 6 core Coffee Lake-S CPUs & Z370 chipset 5 October 2017

Fantastic?? A consumer chipset motherboard costing as much as a X299 motherboard.

Its fantastic but together with the words rip and off!!

The UK prices are pathetic in comparison to the US. I won't divulge the site or the price but CPU, shipping and customs combined makes for poor reading when looking at UK prices across the board from all stockists on all components. File that one under Brexit debate and never speak of it again.

100% this
HOW MUCH?????????

Whats happened to the days when a motherboard which cost "only" £100 to £150 was more than enough for a consumer chip??

What the heck are Intel and AMD smoking nowadays??

At this rate a B series motherboard will be like £150.

Yeah when I buy a motherboard I like to spend around £130 for one with all the big heat sinks, they seem to do all the same stuff as the ones twice the price.

I wouldn't want to spend more than that.

Think I will get the 8600k and motherboard and new graphics when they get in stock at decent price.

100% this

Its still really taking the mickey though - I still remember when £70 to £90 would get you really solid Intel/AMD motherboards with great VRMs,etc. Despite power consumption dropping over time,it seems many motherboards look anemic in comparison.

£100-115 will get you a really solid board still, unless you are being silly with volts, or want a billion additional features.

If you could furnish an example of one of these board you speak of within the last 7 years, that would be great, but nothing much has changed, just manufacturers have added premium ranges with many, many added extra's.

Could maybe stomach it if RAM and GPU prices weren't rising so quickly, the 8Pack ones are actually the best value that I can see in terms of RAM, G.Skill look so much more lush though . Though the Godlike board is taking the piddle with that price, think it's even dropped 20 notes since it went live at 1400 today.

As we move away from 1080p, however slowly, the onus goes onto the GPU and the price rises are reflecting this. I don't think NVidia are too far of the mark when the say GPUs could replace the need for a CPU altogether though I wouldn't say anytime in the next few years.

Quite a few actually - even on the AMD side for example some of the Asus Evo boards had 220w VRMs and cost under £80 and that was like 4 to 5 years ago,yet the B350 ones are not as good by comparison. They were so well built I know a mate who had it under heavy loads for weeks at a time and it still works fine.

Its a myth if you honestly think nothing has changed and sounds like excuse making for the £300 motherboards- please stop trying to do that as it as "enthusiasts" repeating the line nothing has changed has made sure motherboard companies get away with this.

Even on the high end those boards tended to be on average not nearer £300 plus but closer to £200,but then in RL and on forums I helped out with a lot of different builds.

Now it is quite common for consumer higher end socket motherboards to be well over £200 which is even more ridiculous once you consider most of the chipset functionality is moving more and more onto the CPU.

Its not helping too,but the issue is people have been accepting the price increases of consumer socket higher motherboards way too long and its starting to drag up the price of cheaper boards too.

I mean, honestly the last few years with Z170/Z270/Z370/X370 have been taking the mickey, when some of these boards are now hitting Intel HEDT board prices which are made to work with quad channel RAM,more PCI-E,more power requirements, etc.

I can understand a £200+ X299 motherboard,not a £200+ Z370 or X370 one.

Is there much difference between any of the Strix-alphabet boards?

Hard to say - the review sites are focusing only on the top ones! ;)

Edit!!

From a quick look, its mostly the VRM but again until some of the review channels look carefully at them its hard to say how much better the higher end will be in RL.

IIRC,there is one chap who actually looks at the physical chips and designs used, and has called out some companies for focusing more on the specs than the actual power delivery. Can't remember the name of the channel though but he seems to be quite knowledgeable.
