Intel to launch 6 core Coffee Lake-S CPUs & Z370 chipset 5 October 2017

so my 5Ghz rated OCUK binned/delided 8700k is now at 5.1Ghz @ 1.35v Its running at around 70c after 30 mins on water on prime95 (small FFT). Ive got 2 x 240 Rads with CPU & GPU in the loop.

I may still just roll it back to 5Ghz for every day but its impressive.

Are you testing with V26.6?

Just like my observations on kabylake, the higher temps cause instability which were resolved post delid.

Try 5.2ghz

I'm curious because we've got the same batch number and I haven't delidded yet.

Seems as though I wasn't lucky enough to be quick enough to get a 8600k, would have had a dispatched email by now so changing to the 8400 as it's best value - build was going to be for eldest brother , happens that youngest needs a bit of an upgrade to- i7 860 and I changed that same chipset this year so now how much improvement he'll get .

Also, since I tend to quote a lot of Ryzen builds it's will be interesting to see how this Intel fairs. Did see gigabyte and ASRock boards for under £110 but then rides the Gigabyte to £120.... :(
Please update us on performance

Hmm...to ditch my 4770k or not.

Can’t see any ASUS micro atx board.

Not worth waiting for the Z390 boards and see what they bring? The Z370 are good but are just a stop gap because of Intel releasing a handful of CPUs early. Come December I suspect there'll be more choice and stock and if your 4770k is still working then I'd personally wait on Z390

*Edit - December might be ambitious but in fairness the chips weren't due out in October until Ryzen came out and disrupted the market

What better must have features will Z390 bring?

Honestly don't know but they were meant to be for the 8th gen processors and they are rumoured to support 8 core processors which would either mean they have an upgrade path on 8th gen / refreshes and an 8-core 8th gen variant or they will work with Ice Lake? Knowing intel it's probably none of the former and is actually just the board that they were meant to release on and Z370 is in fact just a knock on effect of the rush job that has affected board manufacturers

Also maybe more PCI lanes, DDR5??? Anyone's guess

That could well be the case. Coffee Lake was clearly rushed to market as a response to Ryzen taking market share away from Intel, I wouldn't be surprised if Z390 was "what Z370 should have been". Maybe Z390 will be forwards-compatible with Icelake but Z370 won't, who knows.

Hmm so probably Z390 will be another dead end board and no point waiting unless you also want the 8 core if there is one.

I cant see Intel not releasing a new chipset for icelake :)

Think anything between now and Ice Lake will be a dead end in all honestly. Look at how quick they've been churning out chips and chipsets over the past 4 years. I agree ice lake will probably be on a new chipset and that makes sense - it's 10nm instead of 14nm unlike reusing the LGA1151 socket but not being compatible because of moved pins.

Just reading the reviews and it seems for gaming at 1080p there is about a 10% average FPS difference compared to Ryzen at stock clocks when overclocked to around 5.0 depending on game and once you get to 1440p the difference is minimal. When you overclock Ryzen it drops to about 5% or so for 1080p.

If I was looking for an upgrade at the moment I would skip Coffee Lake for the next Intel or take Ryzen knowing AM4 will allow future CPU upgrades if needed.

Z390 is supposed to integrate wifi, bt and usb 3.1 gen 2 (10Gbps).

And the reason they've made Z370 Coffee Lake only is because they're using more pins for VCC on Z370, 146 on Z370 vs 128 on Z270.
You can find the info in their 8th gen datasheet here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/u...cessor-family-s-platform-datasheet-vol-1.html

@DarkHorizon472 10% is putting it mildly for 1080p, probably GPU limited tests because in the reviews with a 1080 Ti the difference is higher.

They were with a 1080 over several difference games, I don't have ninja like reactions that need over 144FPS :)

To be honest anything over 60FPS would match my skills :D

PCI-E lanes are restricted on the CPU. So 16 for the GPU and DMI3.0 for chipset (4 pci-e lanes) for the 8xxx gen.

If you're happy with Ryzen then there's not really any point in upgrading, but the 8700K does look really good based on benches :D
It's more of an upgrade for those with older gen CPUs.
