That wouldn't explain why they couldn't make it forwards-compatible with Icelake, if that indeed ends up being the case. We don't know yet.

Yes. If you have the cash to splash for a 1080 Ti you probably have the cash to splash for an i7-8700K so who cares.
 
If you want/need the upgrade, I wouldn't wait for the Z390. The on-board features are a bit of a whatever and you could always use an expansion card if you're gagging for faster USB.
 
@DragonQ They're down to 25 reserved pins for the entire socket with Coffee Lake, for 8 cores they'll most likely need a new socket.
There's not much point in possibly gimping Icelake to make it compatible with Z370 boards anyway, most people who will get that will probably be upgrading from older gen CPUs.

Not sure DDR5 will be around for us in 2019, isn't that the time servers get it first? Hard to say.

But since i game at 1440p high hz, I'm not even sure it's worth changing from my x99 5820k to anything less than DDR5 & PCIE4.

Very late 2019, early 2020 if it all stays on track. So two fulls years minimum, more like 2.5 years from now. Have to wait to see how GPU's progress in the next two years to see where the rest of the system needs to be.
 
This makes Kaby lake obsolete now. I'm sure the likes of MSI, Asus, etc are all loving the fact they have a huge inventory of Z270 motherboards that they are now going to struggle to sell.
 
All they need to do is lower pricing on Kaby Lake / 200 series mobos, they have a lot of leeway there too since the 4C Kabys are only 123 sq mm.

Hopefully that'll eventually translate to a price drop once 8th Gen chips are widely available. One can hope anyway.

Yeah could be 2019 for us, just looked again and it's due for servers next year so.. possibly.
