Intel to launch 6 core Coffee Lake-S CPUs & Z370 chipset 5 October 2017

@HangTime Some of the ASRock boards with their BCLK Engine II seem to be able to overclock the locked chips, but I can only find a few forum posts. If it's anything like the Skylake debacle the Intel is probably going to smack ASRock so they remove that feature in future BIOS updates.
 
I Would buy a 8400 if you could get decent returns from BCLK overclocking but seems that isn't the case or there would be lots of articles on it. Bring back the old days when Intel didn't support overclocking which meant no chips were singled out for nerfing... :/
Even at stock settings it performs very similar to an i7 7700k

That's what I was hoping for. Still have hope that a motherboard with a clock generator gets released in a few months.
 
I've read posts elsewhere saying they don't work with non-K cpus but evidence is very thin on the ground at the moment.

Don't get me wrong the 8400 looks reasonable for the money but my worry is with it topping out at 4ghz that in games that aren't well threaded it won't actually be much of an upgrade from older quads at a higher clockspeed. By the time you've shelled out for cpu, mobo and DDR4 that comes to £400+ for which I'd want a significant improvement (6+ cores at 4.5ghz+ with better IPC). If it was overclockable then I would put it top of the pile because that would aleviate the main shortcoming (clockspeed). Or indeed if RAM was priced like it was a year or two back (a good £50 cheaper for a 16GB kit) and cheaper mobos in the ~£70 range like you used to get it would be a bit more appealing. Paying over a ton is fine if it gives you better OC potential etc but if that is out of the question then a budget board would be fine.

Benchmarks indicate that the lower clockspeed doesn't seem to matter much in the 10+ games I have seen benchmarked by reviewers. Not to say that 4ghz is ideal, but I think the trend moving forward is that game engines prioritize core amounts over all out single core frequencies.
 
ASUS Prime Z370-A seems to have a pretty solid VRM, ASP1400BT 4+2 controller with Vishay mosfets (SiRA14DP high side and SiRA12DP low side), more than overkill to push an 8700K to its limits on air/water.
Seems to be the most solid for VRM in the mid-range board bracket.

Edit: Holy! The ASRock Z370 Taichi uses Fairchild FDPC5030SG mosfets, it could probably cope with an overclocked Skylake-X 18 core :eek:

What's the memory side like? Coffelake seems to crap out on heat and RAM overclocking long before CPU voltage.
 
Should be similar to what's used on the CPU VRM for most of these boards. Usually the higher end boards have 2 phases for the memory, which could possibly help with RAM overclocking.

They're easy to spot, ASRock Z370 Taichi for example:

Would be nice to see price drops on older hardware but typically with PC components that doesn't happen to extremes, they seem to get modest price drops then just disappear from sale.

Still, for the first time in ages I'm excited about the cpu market, to put that in context I am still running a 3570k which I bought five years ago next month.

Early bios' could be having an effect.

Same here I have the 3570k going to ditch it for coffee lake.

Tried starwars beta on origin today my old 3570k is just failed completely running at 100% all game and not smooth at all.

I think the 8600k would probably be my best option but after seeing starwars ruin my 4 core bit worried about only getting 6 without hyper threading.
