Intel to launch 6 core Coffee Lake-S CPUs & Z370 chipset 5 October 2017

They need to position this at a price competitive to the Ryzen 3 CPU's - the 8350k

If they do that & have affordable motherboards they could return with some oomph

Good there is competition now though

We got any idea when we are going to see reviews of the 8700K and assorted motherboards? I want to give my boys my 4770k and 1070 build and move up to a newer chip with DDR4 and get a Vega 56, originally had planned to buy a Ryzen setup, even bought a CH6 from MM and i bought some 3400mhz ram that was on offer elsewhere, but as i only game pretty much nowadays im thinking Ryzen might be a bit overkill, i cant bring myself to buy a 7700k with the new 8700k coming, i feel the 6 core is a progression from my current 4 core setup etc while hopefully giving better performance etc.

My only concerns with 8700k is going to be thermals etc, i just hate the idea of having to delid something to tame it, that to me is a poor engineering design, judging by the current crop of Intel chips it seems they are all running hot and this is perceived generally to be ok, which sets a bad precedent for the future etc, my 4770k is a poor chip also, it doesnt OC very well, so ive left it at 4.3ghz and got on with it.

Being as i mainly play MMO's (Everquest currently and that is an old singlethreaded game) im moving more towards Intels IPC advantage over Ryzen, and the extra cores should help in upcoming titles i want to play (Pantheon etc).

So any idea when we can expect some more concrete solid info?

If Ryzen is overkill then why would you spend even more on the 8700k? For playing old games how much IPC do you really need to make the game run really well?

Also why move from a 1070 to Vega 56? They are almost the same performance wise. Plus Vega doesn't overclock at all and you can usually get a decent OC on a 1070.

Not really trying to have a go, just want to understand your motivations a bit more :)

Yeah should have said i have a Freesync 1440p 144hz Screen so i want to go back to an AMD Card, i will give the 1070 + 4770k rig to my kids, can always keep the CH6 for future projects should Ryzen v2 be decent as well.

With regards to CPU change, i just feel ive had this 4770k for a good few years now and just fancy a change mostly, also i can move to DDR4 and m2 etc, i have a 500gb m2 drive waiting as well, which was for the Zen build etc.

Basically the real question is, do i go with Ryzen or do i go with 8700k, im guessing the IPC deficit on Zen is going to not be noticeable really in the type of game i play (EQ can be played on a 2500k igpu without issue lol), and i guess the AM4 socket is going to have a longer lifespan than the Intel Z370 socket as well? I ruled out the 1600x purely on if im going AMD cpu for the same price i would pay for an Intel 8700k i can get a 1700 etc.

is this still coming in august (few days left), feel kinda stupid buying a z270 board when this is about to be released. :)

As far as I know, no. Paper launch, some mobile chips "soon (TM)", desktops end of the year.

Hence I now have a Ryzen kit waiting for me to put it together :D

Depends if you're going anything besides gaming. For just gaming, with a Vega 56 it's probably not worth going for the i7-8700K. With a GTX 1080 Ti or maybe GTX 1080 it might make sense if playing at 1080p. Otherwise Ryzen is sufficient and saves a lot of cash.

End of October, beginning of November is looking like the dates most likely. So all in only 2 months earlier than they would have launched if they followed the normal refresh cycle, which would have been Jan '18.

Great marketing from Intel, with the leaks pointing towards August however, keeping people from possibly jumping to AMD.

November is a little late imho to release

It's later than some folk would like it to be, and it is off putting to anyone who was about drop money on this, and now can't, and they can't really buy Z270 since that's now effectively dead already.

Intel have put a right spanner in the works if you waited since the rumours in June, only to be told the two months wait is now almost 5 months, so stuck waiting.

As always in the PC space, there's never a best time to upgrade.

They can release it when they like, I'll be jumping from AMD.
October would be nice though.

Cold boot bugs are annoying AF when running >3200 ram and I'd like more IPC tbh.
Seems every bios update asus seem to break something else too.

That's why i stayed on the one that work when we set up my computer. I have checked and there is another 3 Bios revision but i am cautious that they may break something in my stable overclock.
Since we had chat I didn' have a single crash or cold boot. Works like a charm.

So your overclock isn't stable? :|

Completely stable, 4000% HCI stable, if I unplug the PSU or the wife turns power off to plug to vacuum in or something then it goes to crap.
9/10 my pc startup goes like this.
Turn on
boot loop
clear cmos
load bios profile
boots fine at 3.9/3466
works perfect until the psu loses power for whatever reason, then rinse and repeat.

Put ram to 3200 and all is fine, its a known ryzen bug.
