TBH most of the replies seem to be over the top bitchy giving the picture that the girl thinks shes the best thing since slice bread, but on the other hand some seem perfectly proportional.

Get someone else to take a pic mate. When you take pics of yourself you end up getting a "fisheye", unflattering effect because you're too close.

Mate, I am a fugly bast, but even I can have a half decent picture taken outside. If you have a pic taken somewhere interesting then the viewer may not be so critical of your mug. You're hardly a minger anyways dude!

could you not use the timer on your camera to get a more natural picture?
I know what you mean about having no local friends to go out with, you get stuck in a cycle of staying in all the time (I know - I've done it for 10 years now!)

i will give the timer idea a shot.
timer one didn't go too well either
Maybe place yourself at a more casual pose i.e. body 3/4 towards the camera with head looking just past the lens and place your body in either 1/3 or 2/3rd of the image.
Or go on one of these activity things that take a picture of you whilst doing it?

Its all about the angle, focus and lens. Google hints and tips for profile pictures I'm sure there is a guide on there or ask raymond lin. He seems to make coffee cups look interesting
