does anybody know if I purchase one today and activate it on itunes on my work laptop, can i plug it into my home pc when i get home and sync it on that. just i want to activate the phone so i cans start using it straight away, im on a 24hour shift :(

Why? They will just suffer buyers remorse when it takes a price cut of 50% in January, following the launch of the iPhone 2 (3G and GPS) :)

A mac:Geek at work has an iPhone. I had a play and to be honest the phone is nice does all I'd need and I'm sorely tempted (my existing contract is about £35).

From work I currently have a BlackBerry 7130v. So I'm used to those services such as over the air calendar sync, push email and on the ode via GPRS.

All I require from a iPhone is:
1. Voice Calls
2. Voice Mail
3. SMS with a predictive dictionary (UK not US please!)
4. Contacts sync'd with my MBP Contacts
5. Calandar sync'd with my MBP iCal (optional would be over the air sync)
6. Speakerphone
7. Voice dialing for contacts
8. Web access that can cope with https connections! WiFi or over the air. I'm used to GRPS speeds.
9. Ability to switch off usage of GPRS/EDGE data usage - I travel for my job so I don't want to be hit with massive data roaming charges!
10. If I switch off data it doesn't impact voice mail.

Would be nice features:
1. POP/IMAP Email support (private - not O2 email servers or any ISP) - configurable pull would be fine every morning & evening prior to leaving work.
2. a unique ring tone - I've lived with the BB ring-ring so this isn't a big thing.
3. ability to sync podcasts/iTunes for those bored times.

So any comments against my requirements from users would be good.

activated. sweet :D didnt think id pass a credit check with some bad credit i had with ntl last year (there fault)

went for the 45quid/m option as i physically abuse the text messages.

i quite like it, except im having trouble setting it up for my work email

Dispite EVH telling me a thousand times how to do it I still had troubles but I now know why.

Anyway this method does work

1. Create a ringtone as mp3 (less than 30 seconds long).
2. Import into iTunes.
3. Convert to ACC.
4. Rename extension to m4r.
5. Drag the file into the ringtones folder.

You can then sync your custom ringtone with your iPhone

iTunes 7.5.0.20
iPhone 1.1.2

Excellent! I guess it was just the length of the tones that was the problem :)

Roll on custom tones..

It was actually because I was copying the m4a and then changing that to m4r. But apparently its just a matter of changing that one m4a file and then dragging it to the ringtones folder.

Hard to get it right when there are so many methods for various versions. Thanks for your patience though EVH.

I need some help guys, have had my iPhone since Tuesday and its constantly crashing :(. Its an official one from O2 all activated etc, was working well for two days then on Thursday evening it crashed whilst i was using Youtube and browsing the net. Then this morning it woke me up (as usual) but then i overslept as it had crashed when i pressed snooze!

Now this evening i can hardly do anything without it freezing/locking up completely and i have to hold the power button and home buttons to reset it, then about 1/5 times it will work so i can enter my pin code but the other 4 times it doesnt react at all to my screen presses or to the volume/mute buttons etc..just completed crashes. Have also tried the factory reset options and after erasing absolutely everything its crashing every few seconds!

Really need help - is my best option to return it under the 14 day thing if i can?

They'll swap it over if you take it back to the shop you got it from.

If they don't just get a refund on the 14 day grace period, I can't see it being a problem though.

Also, sorry to hear about your issues. I've had a few Safari crashes, but that's because I'm impatient and insist on hammering the keyboard whilst it's loading a page :D;)

It's really frustrating as i love the phone (see previous post...:p) but i can't deal with this. I have been really careful and giving it plenty of time just in case its being a little sluggish, but its just plain crashing. I bought it from the O2 site so looks like ill return it with the returns card i got with it.

I also don't seem to have any signal whatsoever when i am at home, so think best bet is definately to call it a day with the iPhone.

Out of interest - has anyone else returned theirs under the 14 day grace period, have any problems etc? Especially to the O2 online shop?

I took my first back as i couldn't afford it.

My Mum bought me another though when she was visiting!

It's been a pain in the ass to cancel though, i said at the store when i took it back does it cancel the contract and he said yes, i then proceeded to email O2 just to make sure and they also said yes. But then i logged into O2 on the account i signed up with and it says they are going to debit £36 on the 24 november. So i email again and they said i have to email this other o2 email address.

Just waiting now to see if they debit my account.

Also i can't change my payment details.

I actually took my first one back to 02 (not online).

Said I didn't want it and the refunded me no questions asked.

(Actually swapped sims with my spare iPhone and took it back because I scratched the metal and wanted another), just got another from the CPW across the road, and kept my original SIM.

All activated fine, and been keeping it scratch-free since

Have a screen protector on mine. Thought i would re-align it yesterday, what a bad idea! Was a pain to get off and ending up bending the screen protector, then when i was getting the new one on, lined up fine. Then went on a white screen on the phone and noticed hair and dust underneath the screen protector!

Grrr! Need to buy another screen protector if i want it dust free. Really good screen protectors also!

Where you get them from mate?

Ummmm, i think my mother got them from apple. Ill find the make for you. There really good!

Found them.

If the link below doesnt work, they usually time out for whatever reason. There called "Power Support Crystal Film".

You can't tell my phone has one on at all until you look really close at the home button or speaker hole.

Are screen protectors really necessary? I've had mine over a week now and the screen is still perfect despite being stuffed in my pocked with a load of other stuff...

1. Check
2. Check (I'll do you one better - Visual Voicemail!)
3. Check
4. Check
5. Check (No OTA I'm afraid)
6. Check
7. Nope (Sorry. Instead you have a "double-tap to access" Favourites list.)
8. Check (Wif-Fi, EDGE and GPRS)
9. Check
10. Check (The iPhone detects when there's no data access and gives you an option to dial your voicemail the old-fashioned way instead of using Visual Voicemail. Turning off data does not hinder your ability to receive voicemail.)

1x. Check (You can manually input details for ANY POP/IMAP servers you may use, it doesn't need to be O2 or chosen from a predefined list of ISP's. In addition, if you have your account set up in Mac OS X Mail it automatically syncs it. No push unless you use Yahoo mail, but there is OTA pull over Wi-Fi, EDGE and GPRS, not just when plugged into a computer.)
2x. Sorta (At the moment there is a very easy method to get custom ringtones on the iPhone. Its been around for a few versions of iTunes, was disabled in the last version, but bizzarely made it back in the current one. Note that this method isn't supported. In the near future there will be an officially supported way of making ringtones from songs in your iTunes library, currently available for the US iPhone but not for the UK one yet.)
3x. Check (Of course! If it didn't sync with iTunes it wouldn't be much of an iPod! Music, Photos, Videos, Podcasts - including video podcasts...the whole shebang)

That answer your question? :)
